The years of the first half of 19th century are marked by the court attempt to fit the provinces in their pattern of civilization and introduce it in the Imperial State. In Grão-Pará, territory unification and empire consolidation had some conflicts caused by Cabana rebellions. Portuguese Empire called marshal Francisco José de Souza Soares d’Andréa to combat cabanos. Among his worries there were issues such as political disputes between local authorities, military restoration, population control and regional economy development, all related to manpower problems and its insufficiency to perform required services in the province. This is how his speeches take measures to control and civilize the population, defending the renewal of habits and encouraging work. On april 25, 1838, president Soares d’Andréa regulate in Grão-Pará the politics of free worker regimentation establishing a provincial constitution called “Corpos de Trabalhadores”. During some time “Corpos de Trabalhadores” came up in the history as an institution which only aimed the rebel population control in Pará, as an entity to stop Cabanos. Mentioned in the beginning by Cabangem students the economic importance of the corporation is still an object of research. Accordingly, the “Corpos de Trabalhadores” has other meanings. Besides a tool with the objective of population control, the corporation was an attempt to bring peace through manpower concentration. It intended men enlist for necessary services to province economic restoration. In marshal Andréa politic project the key was development, reorganization of industry and Grão-Pará market. Besides, the institution was a politic arrangement between Imperial State and the ones who represented important people in the region.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016-06-28) MELO, Vinícius Zúniga; COELHO, Mauro Cezar; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7187368960757936
The villages’ administrators, responsible for the settled Indians’ tutelage during the term Directory (1757-1798), are considered for an important part of historiography as subjects who took advantage of the role assignments to give account of their personal interests, disobeying constantly the legal provisions. Because of this behavior, some authors blame the administrators for the "failure" of the Indians’ Directory. This work, considering restricted this formulated vision, aims to understand better who were the directors that worked in Pará Captaincy. By analyzing the sources, found that those subjects occupied the chambers of the Villages, military troops and requested land grants and mercies. Regarding the latter, specifically, the directors required in return to their services in the Portuguese Amazon. Alongside these services, the directors committed a series of transgressions in the villages aiming to access local resources. Thus, we argue that serve the Portuguese crown and transgress one of its laws, the Indians’ Directory, were not incompatible practices but, coexisting on the day of the administrators. This is because the service and transgression was constituted on key strategies for achieving success in the region. It is due to be used for this purpose, which argued also that the transgression continued to exist on a large scale in the Grão-Pará of the second half of the eighteenth century, even as a practice on which there was moral criticism among the inhabitants of the society, and even she happening in a period in which Portugal sought to have a more effective political and economic control in the kingdom and overseas.

Etnogêneses e cidadanização no Brasil: movimentos indígenas e educação para a cidadania no tempo presente (1964-2021)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2022-11-28) FERNANDES, Fernando Roque; COELHO, Mauro Cezar; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7187368960757936
Indigenous peoples were not passive recipients of indigenous policies created by the Brazilian State in the second half of the 20th century. On the contrary, they were the protagonists of the struggle for equal rights, even when the context of political and social crisis that characterized the Civil-Military Regime, between the years 1964-1985, advanced on the future of the indigenous question through attempts at compulsory emancipation that put jeopardize the survival of different peoples. The objective of this thesis is to present an analysis that helps in the understanding of the strategies that dimensioned the articulations of subjects and ethnic groups in defense of their specificities and differences, contributing to the occurrence of political and social emergencies characterized by the phenomena of ethnogenesis, which inform aspects of indigenous citizenship under the terms established by the Brazilian Constitution of 1988. It is also to verify how contemporary indigenous movements, through their agencies, based on exemplary initiatives, have appropriated civil representation associations and school education as instruments at the service of training for the exercise of full citizenship in the context of the struggle, still ongoing at the present time, for the guarantee and achievement of rights that consider the socio-historical specificities that inform multiculturalism in Brazil.

This paper examines the projects of indigenous civilization developed by four intellectuals of the Second Empire who lived in the province of Para in this period. Their names are: Henrique de Beaurepaire Rohan, Couto Vieira de Magalhães, Antonio Macedo Costa and José Verissimo. Their perceptions about the indigenous civilization are considered, by one side, as considering the specifics of the intellectual condition of the Empire, emphasizing the provision of such scholars within the field with the intellectual and their connections within the power field; on the other side, they are considered under the social lens of these agents, regarding to their ideological beliefs, their work, the debates and political struggles in which they were involved, these elements were active in their political action and in the formulation of their ideas. Such notions are consistent with the experience built in amazon space, which contributed to the preparation of their visions about indigenous civilization. Thus, perceptions about the Indigenous people were related with political and intellectual attitudes of the intellectual agents of the Empire , as it was with their experience in the amazon valley.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2010-03-20) MANAÇAS, Mirtes Emilia Almeida; COELHO, Mauro Cezar; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7187368960757936
Based on theoretical considerations on the concept of Ethnogenesis, this dissertation addresses the process of how the Xikrin Indians remake, restructure, reconfigure and reelaborate their political, social, cultural and economic relations in all areas of their lives, when meeting the ―other‖, initiating a new collective and individual identity. One verifies that since the mythical times and until today, the historical process of the Xikrin versus ―the other‖, may be perceived from the their existing body paintings and ornaments, the first being one of the tools used as defense armament, aiming to maintain, in the best way possible, the existence of their community within their live perspectives.

“Melhores mestres...”: saberes indígenas e ciência colonial no vale Amazônico (século XVIII)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2023-09-05) SANTOS, Rafael Rogério Nascimento dos; COELHO, Mauro Cezar; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7187368960757936
This thesis analyzes the roles that the indigenous peoples of the Amazon Valley played in the circulation/construction of knowledge during the second half of 18th century, considering them as subjects who were actively involved in this process, as historical protagonists. From the perspective of Indigenous History and the History of Science, and through documentation, I demonstrate that their knowledge was part of the constitution of the natural sciences under construction in that period, and how, to a considerable extent, their knowledge was appropriated by the modern science under construction at the time. The thesis states that the construction of knowledge, as well as its circulation, relied essentially on local sources and practices, and, as I try to show and analyze, on indigenous practices, techniques and knowledge. I present and analyze sources that make it possible to insert the indigenous peoples of the Amazon Valley into the history of Western scientific knowledge.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2021-05-04) MEIRA, Jean Paul Gouveia; COELHO, Mauro Cezar; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7187368960757936
This thesis aimed to analyze the role played by the Tupi leaders, belonging to the Tabajara and Potiguara peoples, in the process of insertion of indigenous peoples in colonial society from the conquest and colonization of the Royal Captaincy of Paraíba, and other captaincies of northern Brazil, throughout the sixteenth – eighteenth centuries. During the first contacts between indigenous and colonizers, the later had the need to insert themselves into the logic of the wars fought between the Tupi societies to contract aliances and conquer the territory. The Europeans were inserted into the indigenous “universe” from the relations of marriages established with the daughters of the Tupi chiefs. The matrimonial agreements between indigenous and colonizers were fundamental for the settlement of the captaincies of Pernambuco and Itamaracá in the first half of the sixteenth century. Troughout this century, many indigenous allies were enslaved, and this conjucture caused indigenous chiefs to re-establish peace agreements with the colonizers trought the provision of services, notifiedly of wars, to not only avoid the enslavement of their people, but also for the preservation of collective lands from the insertion of such individuals in the missionary villages. Many indigenous peoples were protagonists in the wars that resulted in the foundation of the captaincy of Paraíba and other captaincies of northern Brazil, as well as in the conquest of the backlands, throughout the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The provision of services resulted in numerous rewards, mainly for the Tabajara and Potiguara leaders, who were able to obtain social mobility.

Considering the importance of the iconography, mainly the photography, in order to clarify facts about the history of the Amazon, specially those related to life, culture, natureand the history of occupation of the region that belongs to Indian people and traditional populations, I did an accurated examination of photographs produced by Henri and Octavie Coudreau in their expedition for the interior of Pará, when both work for the government of the State, during the period of 1883 to1899. I worked yet on the material produced only by Octavie Coudreau through the period of 1899 until 1903, after her husband death; at this time she was also working for the Amazonas State government. Through attentive and detailed reading of these pictures, besides the examination of other written sources, including the proper travelers stories, I look for to understand what I can affirm as being the biggest paradox of these travelers de la Troisième République française: the belief in the romantic ideal of the “good savage” and the intransigent defense of a civilization and its inexorable march, which, in last instance, would be responsible for the whole destruction of this “first and integral” man. Another secundary objective is also understand what became the Coudreau couple to be attached to an idea – that later became a belief – that would be possible to find in the Amazon Rain Forest the “good savage”. In my research, I intended, moreover, to reflect on if those facts would be really a belief or simply “bait” to attract their readers. Therefore it’s clear, in the stories of the Coudreau couple, two different speeches: a romantic one, that of the good savage, and a laudatory one, regarded to the progress of the region, the defense of the philanthropic colonization of “the primitive” people and the infinite progress of the Man.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2010-08-27) KETTLE, Wesley Oliveira; COELHO, Mauro Cezar; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7187368960757936
Drawn up amid the interventions of the Portuguese administration in the Amazon Valley, Antonio Landi’s Descrição de várias Plantas, Frutas, Animais, Aves, Peixes, Cobras, raízes, e outras coisas semelhantes que se acham nesta Capitania do Grão Pará, written between the years of 1772 and 1773, has been seen by History as a result of the interests of the Portuguese Crown. This present work has as object of study such description, providing an understanding which is distinct from the commonly accepted one: Descrição das plantas e animais da capitania do Grão Pará emerged as a logical extension of the metropolitan policies. Thus, it is not a formulation suggested or determined by the colonial bureaucracy, but a work motivated by colonial demands. Moreover, this thesis aimed to understand the intents which were proper of the Italian architect’s condition of settler, avoiding to conceive his production as a naturalist only as a reflection of the scientific thinking in Europe. Formerly, seeking to understand this activity as something related to the context of the local colonial dynamics. Thus, this study seeks to demonstrate that the practices and specific shapes of the Amazon Valley society were instrumental in the development of Antonio Landi’s Natural History work.
