This term was created during the Spanish Civil War, when, at that time, the army of four columns led by General Francisco Franco was approaching Madrid marching against the legalistic government of Azaña. Fifth-Column would refer to a group of spies who would report about strategies, organization and actions of the ruling group to the enemy. This term was spread around the world being appropriated during World War II to designate those who would serve as spies for Germany, Italy and Japan that were known, at that time, as "subjects of the Axis". They were constantly harassed through the printed letters from newspapers, or through the radio programs, movies, literature or even the theater. The sources used for the study were mainly newspapers such as Folha do Norte, Folha Vespertina, O Estado do Pará e A Vanguarda. Federal legislation was also used, as well as the Cordel Brochure O Brasil rompeu com eles, from Zé Vicente.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Arte, Belém, do abstracionismo à visualidade Amazônica (1957-1985): transições movediças e tensões globais(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2019-04-30) COSTA, Gil Vieira; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231This research addresses the visual arts in the artistic field specialized in Belém, especially in the period between 1957 and 1985. This period marks in the city the contact and the absorption of values and practices of the internationalist artistic currents, such as the modernist abstractionism, the postmodern vanguards and the contemporary art. The way in which the local field has established relations of openness and resistance to these currents is studied from the theories of coloniality. Usually, the 1960s and 1970s are seen as the moment when contemporary art established itself worldwide, so this thesis can be understood as a narrative of 'history of contemporary art'. In Belém, the consolidation of this artistic paradigm was experienced through shaky transitions – slow, discontinuous and hesitant – in which there was a clear dispute between global values and local practices. The tensions between 'global' and 'local', in the art produced in the city in that period, conditioned the emergence of important artistic projects, which still little known and debated. For many of these projects, the ideas and images of the Amazonia were fundamental components – a topic that can add new information and approaches to the debate about 'Brazilian art' in those decades.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Caridade e saúde pública em tempo de epidemias. Belém 1850-1890(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2006) COSTA, Magda Nazaré Pereira da; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231Forced to face a serious epidemic crisis that started nearly throughout the second half of the XIX century, the inhabitants of Belém witness, from that moment on, an intense social mobilization that sought to preserve public health in the city. Public health had long ceased being object of interest to the “governo provincial” and now felt the rage of yellow fever, cholera and chickenpox which were erratically making victims around town. Based on these factos this paper seeks to analize some ways used to contain the spread of cases of these cliseases in the capital of the “Província do Pará”, by stressing the sanitary strategies put fort by the people connected to medical science. Such strategies, in most cases carried out by public administration, did not yield worthwhile results; but they interfered with and significatly modified the ways of providing assistance to the most needy patients who were in general helped in the name of charity at the “Santa Casa de Misericórdia” Hospital. The lack of knowledge concerning the etiology of those diseases brought up an even bitterer ideology conflict among medical doctors who disagreed about the possible sources of the epidemic and about the kind of therapeutic methods to be provided to patients at the same time that the risk of contamination also increased “compassion” and “charity” of al who had been direct or indirectly threatened by those diseases.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A ciência do governar: positivismo, evolucionismo e natureza em Lauro Sodré(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2006) COELHO, Alan Watrin; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231The journalistic polemic that, in 1881, involved the then lieutenant Lauro Sodré, bishop D. Macedo Costa and catholic newspaper A Boa Nova occurred in a moment in which the factors that provoked the future deterioration of the Brazilian Empire were already present in Brazilian society. In this work, we aimed at studying the confrontation as a discursive representation of an ideological clash in the social and intellectual aspects of Brazil in the late years of the XIX century: concerning Lauro Sodré, science and progress, appointed as fundamental instruments to the Republic; concerning A Boa Nova, faith and religion, considered essential instruments to the Monarchy. According to the philosophical-historical perspective of positivism, such questions were basic to the process of social evolution, including its political aspects. It shall be also noted that, in the masterpiece of evolutionist theory, Charles Darwin‟s On the origin of species by means of natural selection (1859), historical movement is decisively subordinated to natural laws and is, therefore, inserted in the broader process of evolution of the Universe. Evolution is effectively considered not as a simple movement, but as an improvement, a progress. To the positivist eyes of Lauro Sodré, the idea of a Monarchy connected to the survival of the conception of divine origin of Power appeared as a valid representation of the non-epistemological states of Humanity: the Metaphysical and the Theological ones; on the other hand, the Republic appeared as the only form of government “compatible with human dignity”. Projecting this polemic on the Brazilian mental realities of that time, we obtain, ultimately, the revelation of one of the components of the nature and forms that the complex relations between philosophical thought and hegemonic political object acquired in the movement of the ideas in Brazil towards the end of the XIX century.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Correndo o risco: Belém do Pará na charge de Biratan Porto no ocaso da ditadura (1978-1985)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-08-26) OLIVEIRA, Walter Pinto de; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231Under what conditions did the civil-military dictatorship hand Belém do Pará over to the period of redemocratization? How did the civil society react to the violence and exclusion of dictatorial policies? These two questions permeate this study, which aims to decipher the situation of the main capital of the Amazon at the time, in the last seven years of the military government, a so-called period of openness, but which, despite suggesting a political softening, carried on with the signs of authoritarianism that characterized the 21 years of the regime. Based on Biratan Porto's cartoons, this study aims to answer those questions, using the methodological tools of the Social History of Art. Forty years after the events, the artist's critical humor offers an alternative reading to the press, which at the time was committed to the dictatorship. In its analytical framework of that period, Biratan's cartoon projects a unique perspective on popular resistance and suggests replacing an authoritarian clientelism with another, democratic, but still clientelism.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Da névoa flamenga à claridade tropical: percursos e pinceis de Georges Wambach na Amazônia em tempos de guerra e paz (1935 – 1965)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2023-11-23) ALMEIDA, Tunai Rehm Costa de; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231This thesis aims to understand the position that Wambach occupied in the disputed Brazilian artistic scene and to think about life and career during his time on Brazilian soil, highlighting his stay in Belém. The time frame adopted begins with the artist's arrival in the country, in 1935, until the year of his death in 1965. The first one as intellectual of renowned importance inside the modernist movement, of the agitated Week of 1922 at the countless inquiries and studies on music and folklore. He was an intellectual forming of an intelligence of the national thought. Waldemar Henrique was the author of a gigantic musical work, his first compositions raise it ―Olhos verdes‖, of 1922, in the Rio receiving the denomination of ―Valsinha do Marajó‖ and ―Minha Terra‖, of 1923. In the decade of thirty his work was enlarged thematically stretching out to causes of black folklore, to dramatic regional dances, to songs and legends of the Amazon region. His studies of the music flowed together with the folklore, and his name constantly is remembered by the association that lasts a long time between his artistic work and the Amazon region. This study is based on the ―notion of experience‖ of the Amazon region on these two intellectuals, at a moment of his works in which this place flows together for the set of legends that gives support and builds the narrative of Macunaíma in Mário de Andrade and for the musical series inspired in the legendary Amazonian universe of Waldemar Henrique. When it was born and created in these bushes and rivers, and in the city of Belém, the other, an inveterate traveler to know new things and to realize, how it affirms ―other Brazil‘s‖. Similarities and differences of his approaches move us to conclusions on the Amazon region itself.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A engenharia da história: natureza, geografia e historiografia na Amazônia(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009) MORAES, Tarcisio Cardoso; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231Of the end of century XIX even during the first decades of century XX, the engineers had been between the main names of the production of the historiography “pareanse”. This description has as objective to examine the conformation of a historiography tradition marked by the narrow dialogue with the geographic thought. The proximity between history and geography was articulated in such a way about of a perception dated regarding the social function that fit to each one of them, how about of a project politician thought for the “Amazônia”. In search to redefine, now under the republican look, the bases of the regional identity, it fit to history to review and to recover the Amazonian past inserting the region in a long tradition marked for the gradual development of the civilization. Already to geography it fulfilled to establish the bases of the necessary space knowledge to the identity local, and basic to the action of the State. I have as object the engineers João de Palma Muniz, Enrique Santa Rosa and Ignácio Baptista de Moura. Between historiography production, celebrations of civic events and the foundation of institutions, the project politician of these three engineers was part of a ampler movement of the “paraense” intellectuality. In other words, the engineer-historians had been special part of an ample exercise of understanding of the construction of the identity of the Amazon region from the optics of the power of the State-Nation.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Entre a nação e a região: os Institutos Históricos e Geográficos do Pará e do Amazonas na escrita da História do Brasil, a partir da Amazônia (1917-1953)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2023-12-15) BARROS, Lucilvana Ferreira dos Santos; RICCI, Magda Maria de Oliveira; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4368326880097299; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231This doctoral dissertation aims to analyze the role of the Historical Geography Institutes of the states of Pará and Amazonas, as well as their members, in the construction of the historiographical field of the Amazon and its inclusion into the history of Brazil between 1917 and 1953. The objective of this research is to understand the intentions, strategies, and historical context in which this field operated, especially in the relations between region and nation. In order to assess the activities of the institutions and their historians in the creation of the regional historiographical field, an investigation was carried out based on those institutes’ journals, charters, minutes, letters, correspondence, newspaper articles, reports and proceedings of the National History Congresses held by the Brazilian Historic and Geographic Institute (IHGB), books, book chapters, and articles. This dissertation was founded – theoretically and methodologically – on Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of Fields, especially that of Intellectual Field and its connection with the Field of Power. The initial reading of the documents, as well as the theoretical and methodological framework used in this analysis, allowed for the understanding of the construction of a regional historiographical field. This was disseminated through publications, sent and received correspondence, participation in events, among other mechanisms, that emphasized Amazonian events, characters and narratives in dialogue with the Brazilian history, especially those of founding narratives, both regional and national, the biography of the great names in the history of Brazil and the Amazon, the regional economy, the history of cities and states, the culture, the land and the man of the Amazon, among other themes. The main argument aims to demonstrate that from the formation of a regional historiographical field there was not a process of closing this field around the history of the Amazon, but, rather, a process of writing the History of Brazil starting in the Amazon. Therefore, it is argued that the History of Brazil was not written solely by the IHGB. It was also written from regional spaces, the contact zones among those institutions, in particular due to the struggles seen in historiography in the representations and negotiations of the intricate relations between region and nation.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) O epicentro do Hotel Central: arte e literatura em Belém do Pará, 1946-1951(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2008) CANGUSSU, Dawdson Soares; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231This dissertation discusses the presence of contemporary literature of the 40’s, mainly the influence of the existentialist philosophy, on literature of the young poets who published in the Arte-Literatura supplement, which circulated with the newspaper Folha do Norte between the years 1946 and 1951. To address many problems, doctors, little by little, trying overcome their differences and created rules and ties of solidarity able to unite them around the common goals, consolidating identity of a group which strengthened its corporate and fought for power and prestige they both aim.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Os espectadores: história, sociabilidade e cinema em Belém do Pará na década de 1950(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016-09-15) CARNEIRO, Eva Dayna Felix; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231The sociabilities constituted by the meetings promoted by the film club, the long conversations dealing about film criticism or reference books, the living in newspapers and magazines editorial offices favored the experience of common defining moments, with potential to produce meanings, indelibly printed on their behavior and perceptions about art and life. To accomplish the project, the government tried hard to attract the interest of Japan, offering for free lands for colonization. As result of this diplomatic agreement made between interested parts, from the end of 1929 the migratory process which spread until 1962 was begun, with interruption between 1937 and 1952. During almost three decades, about 1.600 families have disembarked in the paraense port. Most of them fixed in Pará state, forming a significant community of immigrants and their descendants. This paper is about the process which led the migration, construction of the way of life in Amazônia and rework of identity in the new environment. The main approach is Monte Alegre city colonization, in Baixo-Amazonas paraense, although it also refers to other localities in Pará and Amazônia. The analysis involves an effort to argue as much the colonizing process as the exercise in the construction of memory by the immigrants.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) O lápis endiabrado: adrelino cotta e a caricatura em Belém do Pará nos anos 20(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2018-11-29) CASTRO, Raimundo Nonato de; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231The city of Belém in the 1920s carried in the imagination of its population the idea that the urbs was marked by its “modern” aspects. And the ideal stage to reinforce this imaginary was the pages of the periodicals and weeklies that circulated in the capital of Pará in the first decades of the twentieth century. It is precisely in this context that the figure of Andrelino Cotta was able to construct, through his analyzes, images that were able to question how “modern” Belém was seen in the notice of the various problems experienced in the capital of Pará. With the caricature representations, for example, the periodicals had the guns capable of conducting the interpretations in the process of symbolic formation, creating stereotypes, which look for represent the city. In newspapers and magazines, they constructed representations of the most diverse, such as those of humorous character that were marked by the brief, concise, truncated, fast and reversed aspects of meanings, demonstrating a certain familiarity. In this aspect of ideological dispute, the intellectuals were active in the editorial circuit, in special, the comedians stood out for construct by pencil the artistic production filled with double interpretation.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) O meio-tom do sensível: criação, crítica e relações artísticas na pintura de Manoel Santiago (1920-1938)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2023-12-07) SILVA NETO, João Augusto da; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231The thesis discusses the art of the Amazonian painter Manoel Santiago and the artistic criticism of his works. The intended approach is directly linked to the theoretical methodological developments regarding the experiences of critics and artists, as well as their different demands, appropriations and understandings about art. In these terms, an analysis is made of the conditions of Santiago’s artistic creation based on his understanding of art and his social and artistic interactions during his performanc e in Rio de Janeiro between the 1920s and 1938. Throughout his artistic journey, Manoel Santiago shaped perceptions of himself, establishing a certain artistic individuality. In light of this, I emphasize the position that the painter assumed in the artistic scene, highlighting his choices and artistic practices as deliberate strategies to assert himself as an artist, enticing an appreciation for his paintings. Several critiques published in newspapers, books, and magazines are scrutinized with the aim of comprehending the painter's interactions and the perception of his works, with a focus on the relationship between sensitivity and the utilization of color . The thesis is defended that Santiago's idea of art and the process of artistic creation developed from interests and relationships within the worlds of art, in which both the painter himself and critics collaborated to build a certain image and artistic reputation.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Modernidade e integração na Amazônia: "intelligentsia" e "broadcasting" no entre guerras, 1923 -1937(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2011) OLIVEIRA, Érito Vânio Bastos de; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231Modernity and integration in the region called Amazon, and again, whenever we hear in the media, intellectual circles, among politicians of the most varied, North and other regions of the country, and questions arise about the best way to Amazonia. With narrative constructed around personages of demi-monde belenense, O Binóculo weaves in its pages a binoquiana society that circulates for urbe, considering questions specifies of that society, submerged in the ideals of modernity and progress and living under the sign of the Belle- Époque. In this direction, O Binóculo develops intimate dialogues with the press “criticizes and urban and social news” of the time and its representations. Therefore, it is only possible to understand as this periodical it is became possible in Belém, in ends of century XIX, if also to understand the discuss signs that formed the bellepoquiana city.
