During the government of the Military Dictatorship, Amazônia he/she became part of the project of priorities to help Brazil to reach a larger development. Pará had in that process great prominence for being it ' portal of entrance of the area '. Like this, good part of the enterprises that were implanted in this state, it didn't take in consideration the population that inhabited this longínqua it leaves of Brazil, he/she has been forgetting a lot for the federal governments. The thought projects were totally opposed to the type of economic activities that during centuries worked him in the area for the existent communities, as of the natives or of the colonists. The projects agroindustriais had as goal the appropriation of great amounts of earth for they reach its objectives.
This thesis investigated the process of application of the Law no. 601 of 1850, known as the Land Law in the Province of Amazonas and its developments on the border of Rio Branco. It was sought to understand the social, political and economic constitution of the subjects that formed the group of landlords from the creation of the Fazenda Reais and private farms, analyzing, afterwards, the creation of the Upper Amazon Region, setting up tents and the expansion process of farms after the extinction of the Sesmarias Law. Historically, the region of Rio Branco has undergone intense territorial and political processes of disputes that threatened Portuguese domination and, successively, the consolidation of the Brazilian Empire on that frontier. The 1830s and 1870s were marked by the attempt of land grabbing by the United Kingdom, known as the Pirara conflict in Rio Branco, and by the pressure of the United States of America that demanded Brazil to open up for navigation and trade on the Amazon River. All these factors made the Brazilian Empire expend different dimensions for other regions, more flexible with military and other people, maintaining them as allies to defend, colonize and consolidate the empire at the border of Rio Branco. In this context, the lands of the national farms, which belonged to the State, were gradually incorporated into the private patrimony of the military and exiled, as well as lands considered vacant, which were also public patrimony. The Land Law was not enforced, since, according to it, the only form of access to land was the purchase, but it was used politically by the Empire to secure the support of the local landlord class. This process lasted until the 1870s, when this relationship began to have another dimension, much more rigorous, less attached to the local elite and disposed of more charges, especially on the part of the Treasury over the appropriation of assets belonging to the Treasury as the lands of the national farms of the Rio Branco, clear indications that the Brazilian Empire in the borders of the Amazon finally recognized itself consolidated.

A formação da ARENA e do MDB paraenses: cultura política e Ditadura Militar na Amazônia (1964 – 1970)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2023-12-14) MATOS, Flávio William Brito; FONTES, Edilza Joana Oliveira; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9447513031256372
The objective of this master’s thesis is to understand – based on party political trajectories – how the political frameworks of the National Renewal Alliance (ARENA) and the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB) were formed and constituted in Pará. Two axes guide the analysis of this trajectory: the concept of political culture used by historian Rodrigo Motta and the discourse on the locus where this political action takes place, the Amazon. The time frame of the research begins with the collapse of the democratic government in 1964, still in a multi-party environment, and ceases with the effects of Institutional Act Number 5 (AI-5), the moment in which the closure of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Pará (ALEPA) was decreed. A wide range of written and oral documentary sources were used, particularly the Annals of the Legislative Assembly, the Arthur Viana Public Library newspapers, and information from the National Information Service now retained in the National Archives. As conclusions of this work, the continuity in political arrangements before and after the military coup is highlighted, even on the part of militaries who were theoretically newcomers to politics. The role of the political class in building social consensus around Military Governments stands out. And, finally, the hypothesis of the discourse on the Amazon as a mechanism of understanding negotiations and political accommodations within the state is presented.

The present dissertation treats about the intellectuals's acting (poets, journalists, militants, students, folklorists, anthropologists) and popular artists in the formation of the called “MPB”, Popular Brazilian Music, in the state of Pará. Between middles of the decade of 1960 and of 1970, intellectual sectors of the middle class from Pará initiated a great mobilization into the sense of updating the popular music produced in Belém to the political and esthetic discussions that the MPB was carrying out in the remainder of the country. Festivals were carried out, groups of poetry and music appeared, political actings were mixed by bohemian postures and great artistic activity. The new intellect was looking at the same time to do a modern music ruled, but based on elements of the popular culture from Pará or amazônida. Amid new artists that became from these sectors of the society, a revision of the memory of the popular music was done and ancient names were incorporated to one tradition. At the same time, the carimbó, which up to that time was limited to the cities and communities from the country, appears in Belém like a musical explosion and becomes a music consumed by the radios, TVs and the industry of the disc. The urbanization of this type of regional folklore leads to a spacious discussion about authenticity, market and cultural identity of the Amazonian region and of the Pará individually. In this process, artists of popular extracts enter on the stage giving their contribution to the popular musician of the North. The spacious discussion in the newspapers about the carimbó (his authenticity or his degeneration in front of the market) adds up the actings of the intellectual young people. In this complex context of multiple actings, appears a kind of MPB with regional forms.

The following dissertation discusses the relation between politic and the culture of the configuration of a certain interpretation of the man and the amazon nature realities in the beginning of the 70´s. The analysis initiates with the fifteenth hundredth Para´s adherence to the Independence of Brazil´s anniversary, organized by the Government, through the Cultural Council of the State of Pará (CEC-PA), from August 11th to 15th, 1973, which could have the support of the Federal Cultural Council (CFC). As they are official cultural bureaus, they covered a group of highbrowns with a high recognition in the national and regional cultural environment, having the goal of carrying the civilizing mission on that the military governors made in order to prepare the people - or a part of them - , to the Great Brazil Force that they believed to be current. On he local, the highbrows of the CEC-PA contributed with this goal, that sought the cultural integration of the Country, and its political and economical integration at the same time. As a "monstruos occurrence" - paraphrasing the French historian Pierre Nora - , the celebrations for the fifteen hundredth anniversary offer us an opening to understand this recent past of the national and local history and the role of the CEC-PA in the elaboration and authorized diffusion of a certain Amazon reality conception.

As trabalhadoras e trabalhadores têxteis e sua fábrica em Santarém: experiência operária, Justiça do Trabalho e indústria de sacaria no Baixo Amazonas, 1951-1990

This work deals with the experience of workers at the only jute and mallow spinning and weaving factory in Baixo Amazonas, Tecejuta, a large establishment whose history as a company extends from 1951, the date of its foundation, to 1990, the year of its closure. In order to better understand this experience, we initially discuss the factory’s history, which has an important intersection with the history of jute cultivation in the Amazon and with the history of regional planning, which, for this reason, are also focused here. We also discuss the relations between countryside and city in the region and their implications regarding the culture and profile of Tecejuta’s workers, in addition to their notion of customary law. Next, the emergence of Santarém’s Labor Board and its effects on labor relations in the municipality and region are discussed, as well as the patterns of manpower use by the factory in its first phase, which demonstrates its roots in the traditional way of relating the local economic elite with their subordinates in society. Next, we examine the patterns of disciplinary power application at the factory and its dismissal policy, particularly of women, seeking to identify their changes after the intervention of Banco de Crédito da Amazônia and Sudam in the company, between 1970 and 1976, as well as in the later period. Finally, we approach the protest mobilizations of the factory workers and their forms of syndical organization. Permeating the construction of the text from chapter 3, we seek to identify and understand the workers’ ways of resistance within the factory and their tactics when resorting to the Labor Court in search of rights enforcement, which configured a form of construction of their citizenship.

The forest, with all its richness and complexity, plays a central role in this story. It is in this environment that the characters in this story emerge: male and female workers, employers, farmers, landowners, male and female judges. They all contribute to the construction of this research, which is developed through a detailed analysis of labor lawsuits arising from the chestnut groves in southeastern Pará, in the Eastern Amazon, between the 1960s and 1980s. region, based on the legal documentation available at the History and Memory Reference Center of Southeast Pará, comprising a total of 70 labor lawsuits and 68 possessory lawsuits and 15 complaint records, from the Amazon Memory Center (CMA), located in Belém do Pará. Altogether, these documentary sources add up to a set of 153 lawsuits, which provide a basis for research and analysis of labor relations and tenure issues in the southeastern region of Pará, in the Eastern Amazon. The focus is on men and women who have experienced and shaped their working lives, seeking support and justice in the judicial system in the face of the complex labor relations they faced. The analyzed documents bring names, places, dates, and mainly entire histories of individuals and communities, marked by the peculiarities of life in the forest. The information present in these records is invaluable, providing perceptions into conflicts, negotiations and strategies used before the Court of Justice of the State of Pará. The study is based on numerous questions that guide the analysis, portraying only one among the many stories lived in the forest, an environment that has undergone transformations over time. In this study, we emphasize the importance of preserving and valuing the stories of men and women who shaped their lives and work relationships in the forest. We seek to give voice to these protagonists and understand the nuances and challenges of their experiences, contributing to a broader understanding of the social and economic history of southeastern Pará and the Amazon. Among the results, we highlight that the role of the law, although significant, was often not fully effective in correcting the injustices that permeated this scenario. This highlights the cruciality of taking into account local particularities and rooted practices when examining the history and dynamics of work in the Brazil nut groves of southeastern Pará.

This doctoral thesis explores the remarkable political trajectory of Iza Cunha, a pivotal figure in the resistance against the Military Dictatorship in Brazil and a staunch advocate for human rights, particularly focusing on women and gender issues in the Amazon region. The Military Dictatorship, spanning from 1964 to 1985, marked a dark period in Brazilian history characterized by political repression, censorship, and human rights violations. Iza Cunha emerged as a courageous voice opposing this authoritarian regime, mobilizing for democracy, social justice, and gender equality. This thesis examines key moments in Iza Cunha's political journey, from her involvement in student movements during the dictatorship's oppressive years to her leadership role in post-dictatorship popular movements in the Amazon. Through an in-depth analysis of her speeches, writings, and political actions, it seeks to understand how Iza Cunha articulated her resistance against the dictatorship with her advocacy for women's rights and gender equality in the Amazon. Furthermore, the thesis investigates specific challenges faced by women in the Amazon region, including gender-based violence, economic exploitation, and political marginalization. Emphasizing Iza Cunha's role in promoting women's political participation, combating gender discrimination, and ensuring rights, emancipation, and access to basic services such as health and education, this work also evaluates her legacy and relevance to contemporary debates on democracy, human rights, women, and gender in the Amazon. By acknowledging her historical contributions and ongoing struggle, it aims to inspire new generations to emulate her example of resilience and commitment to social justice and gender equality within and beyond the Amazon region.
