(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2011) MORENO, Glaucia de Sousa; ASSIS, William Santos de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0188412611746531; GUERRA, Gutemberg Armando Diniz; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4262726973211880
This dissertation examines how the actions taken by militants and participants of Palmares II Project Settlement, in Parauapebas-PA, contribute or not to consolidate a solidarity political practice in tune with MST ideals, since the camp through settlement phases. Data were collected between January and August 2010 through structured questionnaire used to interview leaders and settlers from the settlement into focus. The main work category is the collective action. It presents evidence that favored the formation and consolidation of the MST in Brazil, and later in Pará. Discusses the theoretical and empirical aspects of collective action in the movement, followed by a brief history of the development of the settlement, demonstrates and describes the collective actions that occurred during this period, brings into discussion contributions of America in Chicago school and from the Italian philosopher Antonio Gramsci. Describes collective efforts in the settlement occurred between 1996 and 2010, demonstrates how they developed, what goals and failures that marked this period, using the Olson, Mckean and Ostrom contributions to substantiate the discussion. Notes similarities and differences between the settlers projects and leaders of the movement, showing that some settlers had their projects "failed" due to the impositions of power play settlers / leadership. Points, in the research year, the collective initiatives that occurred in the settlement, which are assemblies and occupations, in order to resolve issues demanded by the necessity of settlement infrastructure and water supply improvement. Finally it states that it must think about the collective actions inside a project that aims farmers emancipation from a logic that works rooted in respect, first of all centered in settlers goals and needs, ie confined not in ideal models (averse to reality), but substantiated in the democratic conduct that strengthens the priorities settlers choice possibility. So first of all it should hear the agrarian reform actors, the landless or settlers, and not only allow the supposed leadership’s interests be taken into consider.

The Amazon region of Brazil is wide world renowned for its biodiversity and vast watershed. Despite the abundance of water resources, the region has limitations to access the tools, inherent to a proper management of water use, instituted by public policies, especially in rural areas. By this perspective, it is proposed the study of catchment, treatment and water use in rural communities in the municipality of Igarapé Acu-PA. The objective of this study is to describe how the rural population, located in the watershed of the Igarapé Cumaru, captures, treats and uses water, anchoring on the public policies for this theme. This study is structured in three papers, which describes the catchment practices, treatment and water use and its relation with public policies and norms at the federal, state and municipal scales. The survey was also worried to register how the rural population has managed this resource, describing the uses and abuses of water by the community. It is noteworthy that the three articles are grounded in data collected in the field and in the relevant literature about the theme of study. Therefore, the field research was done with use of tools such as participant observation, scripts, closed questionnaires and open interviews. Data revealed that in the municipality there is no water treatment station, with only the distribution, by the health department, of sodium hypochlorite. But most farmers (100% São José, 72% Cumaru), despite receiving the product does not make use, on the argument that interferes in the water taste. It was also found that the supply microsystems need metering valves. It is highlighted, finally, that there is in the municipality, a limitation in the execution of what regulates the public policies, however, the rural population ─ spatially dispersed, with different needs of water resources ─ should be considered in context.

The present research aimed to analyze the training processes developed by ENFOC in the State of Pará and its interference in trade union practices. In this, priority was the Case Study, focusing on the qualitative approach. In the study, there were no fundamental concerns with the processing and quantification of statistical data in terms of numerical representation. The time frame was 2006-2013, during which the ENFOC expanded in the state, becoming a reference in the Brazilian labor scenario by introducing the "Pedagogical Days" as teaching methodology, and has been a pioneer in conducting Regional, Micro-Regional and Municipal Courses. It is based on historical documents and interviews with different actors that integrate the MSTTR. 15 interviews were conducted. Considering the reflections promoted by this school in regard of changes of union practices that are inconsistent with the struggle of the movement, there was the question of what would be the interferences of the formation processes developed by ENFOC in the practices of those who are part of the MSTTR of the State of Pará, focusing on the democratization of trade union spaces and the renewal of leadership. The survey showed that this school introduced debates that are directly linked to their practices and actions, leading to a contribution to a change in trade union organizations to increase the participation of rural workers in the deliberative and consultative bodies of the movement, as well as motivating the renewal of managers and leaders in trade union organizations both at the municipal and state levels, and, above all, was an indicator of the change and the strengthening the union base. There is evidence of positivity and limitation elements of this school in the state. Finally, there is a presentation of new issues to be considered and reflected by the unions

“Do dendê eu tenho medo até dos espinhos”: resistência cotidiana à integração à agroindústria do dendê pelos camponeses de Maçaranduba – Tomé-açu, Nordeste Paraense
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016) SACRAMENTO, Noemi Diniz; GUERRA, Gutemberg Armando Diniz; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4262726973211880
I've built this dissertation in order to analyze the daily forms of resistance to the integration into the agricultural industry of dende palm from the farmers of the colony Maçaranduba, municiplatiy of Tomé-Açú, northeast of Pará State. The daily forms of resistance are not usual subjects within researchs on resistance because they are subscribed in the daily life of the peasant societies that do not always allow the researchers to take them as object of analysis. Maçaranduba is geographically inserted in monoculture expansion zone of dende palm, where integration is a mechanism used by agribusinesses, to the expansion of areas planted with oil palm, supported by the creation of the National Program for Production and Use of Biodiesel (PNPB) and Sustainable Production program of Oil Palm (PSOP). As a result, assumed that individuos are not static, but develop justification, opinions and attribute meaning to their choices based on the projects that the family has and into the "fear" that integration might reduce the autonomy that are used to possess. I've used as a theoretical basis the reflections of James Scott, author that considers the daily life the place where the peasant resistance become plausible and real. The methodology was based on a case study, which allowed to understand how the subjects of Maçaranduba undertook the resistance to the integration, to design the data were applied thirty questionnaires whose organization of the questions focused on the knowledge of the families about the program and their positions about the integration, as well as interviews with key informants to understand local history and public agents involved in the debate. With the research I observed that the families elaborate their justifications for resistance from their everyday experiences, always thinking about productive projects that guarantee the family's permanence in the agricultural establishment, rejecting projects that take risks for the maintenance of future generations. I also observed that the families acquire knowledge about integration from an invisible network of information that they weave among the subjects that are part of their daily lives, among them are the families residing in nearby localities that have joined the project. Despite the resistance to integration, the peasants of Maçaranduba feel the reflexes of the expansion of oil palm plantations, through the application of agrochemicals in the nearby crops and in the modification of the landscape to which they were used to.

This work analyzes the presence of women in the rural workers’ unions of the State of Pará. It considers the unionization of the rural workers in the region, focusing on the change in its profile over the past thirty years and highlighting the participation of women. The work is based on historical documents and interviews with different actors who occupied positions in the union movement at national, state and municipal levels. In total, fifteen interviews were conducted. Through considerations of the concept of gender, questions are raised on the information which could resolve the debates and opinions on the extent to which female involvement in union management has changed union practices. The research indicates directions for further consideration and the need for further studies. The deepening of the debate on gender within the union movement and the adoption of instruments to stimulate and secure participation has increased the number of women in the leadership of the union organizations of rural workers. This effort has not been sufficient to bring female presence to the same level as male participation, with women occupying positions of lower relevance in these organizations. The difficulties experienced by these women and the occurrence of old discriminatory practices are revealed. Finally, new proposals to be considered by the union organization of workers and rural workers are presented.

The goal of this paper was to analyze the empowerment process of the leader‟s women of the rural workers (masculine and female) from Marabá. For this research, the empowerment was considered as an implication of power on the economic, personal, social and political dimensions. The methodology covered bibliographic and documental research and camp research. The data collected occurred by: a) Documental research on the collection of the union researched and of the collection of the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT). b) Camp research, through non-directed interview with 18 people; 11 women and 07 men. With the development of the research, was identified that the women of the STTR from Marabá partipated of struggles and although they achieved achievements, were victims of discrimination and domestic violence in the scope and course of the union militancy. This is a reflex of the processual character of the empowerment, being this process complex and marked by contradictions, advances and retries. The fight against the domestically violence was one of the most cited indicators of empowerment on the interviews realized in all its forms: physical, psychological, sexual, patrimonial and moral. The principal challenge of the women is to continue fighting through a permanent agenda for overcome the domestic violence and the discrimination, ensuring that a partnership and respect between the women and men of the union surveyed.

Florestas e comunidade: cotidiano de famílias em Jericó, Garrafão do Norte, Pará
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2005-05-25) VIEIRA, Paulo Roberto; GUERRA, Gutemberg Armando Diniz; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4262726973211880
At Eastern Amazon, farmers' families build their daily life starting from the forests that complement the landscape, appropriating of the material and non-materials resources which come from the vegetation. The human’s pressure over the nature during the years creates a social drama while the families see the surrounded forests refusing and they become threatened about their land permanence. It was intended to discuss about the various families-forest relations views based in a detailed observation of the daily life at Jericó community in Garrafão do Norte, Pará, Brasil, using as resources: interviews, informal chats and photographic registrations, always having a solid base for the analyses in the local empiric knowledge about the nature. Even if the families worry about the forest degradation there’s a constant necessity to use these forests to guarantee the agricultural productions and other daily activities. In this context, the forest works as a mirror of the man, in front of which he is looking for his self-understanding in the world.

The Agrarian Reform theme has always been present in a way or the other in some intense discussions on the academic level, since the 20’s. With the democratic openning of 1985, the fight over the possession of land became tought and through occupation the pressure was on the state to desapropriate the mencioned areas. The study of the rural settlements became more intense from the decade of 90, with the increase of labourers settled down, it was formed a real social “microcosmo”. This work looks into the organization on land work by familiar farmers on one of the rural settlements in “São Francisco do Pará” municipality, northeast of Pará. Their organization works with a process that associates man-power and/or capital when organizing production, for some local groups on their agronomy activities. (Universidade Federal do Pará, 2013) NASCIMENTO, Elcio Costa do; GUERRA, Gutemberg Armando Diniz; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4262726973211880
This research presents the analysis and understanding of the different strategies of Food and Nutritional Security - SAN developed by the families of the Quilombola Community of Baixo Acaraqui, city of Abaetetuba, Pará. The community is facing changes in their eating habits due of the reduction of natural resources (hunting animals, fishes and shrimps), decreasing of the area for agricultural production, increase of the commercial value of production and increase on spending at manufactured goods. From a qualitative approach and using the following procedures: participant observation, semi-structured interviews and photographic record, free list and workshops on eating habits. We sought, through the integration between the researcher and the social group in question, to appropriate of some information to enable an understanding about the community and their production and food practices. Among the practices developed by families, we observed: a) increase of the production for the marketing, reducing the diversity of local production, reducing the self-sufficiency of families and making production unstable in the face of fluctuations of the local market; b) increasing in the importance of extraction of açaí as an economic factor of income generator; c) increasing the hardship in acquiring locally produced foods (fishes, shrimps, hunting animals); d) Substitution of natural products (natural juices, teas) for industrial products (coffee, soda) by raising spending on food and the need to generate income; e) the increase in purchasing power, stimulated both by the increase of the marketing and the social benefits received (bolsa família, aposentadoria and seguro defeso), encouraged the replacement of local production of some products (rice and beans) for your purchase on local businesses. This reality has significantly influenced the production practices and eating habits of the families of the Quilombola Community of Baixo Acaraqui, influencing in production decisions and in the acquisition of food, making families increasingly dependent on trade and income generation to ensuring the food and nutritional security of the quilombola families.

The work focuses on some life aspects related to an urban cattle ranching family that herds its animals within the urban area of Castanhal Municipality (Pará, Brazil, Eastern Amazonia). It aims to describe and analyze the specific sequence of events that marked the progressively conflicting relationship between the family and its social environment, emphasizing the motivations, mindsets, arguments and points of view underlying the actions performed by the actors involved in the process over time. The method used was the case study, associated mainly with participant observation, semistructured interviews, debates and guided tours to representative spaces to the interlocutors’ history, which were applied in field from June 2013 until February 2014. The first aspect on focus was the social conflict itself, the rough argument performed by the family members and various sectors of society (neighbors, fellow citizens, legislators, government and other authorities) in different moments of their trajectory. The second aspect detailed was the socialization process developed in the children’s upbringing within the family environment and the shifts in its orientation, due to the social pressure against the maintenance of cattle grazing in the urban seat. The third aspect analyzed referred to the contextualization of how the cattle grazing points gradually shifted along the land and how it influenced the formation of new working groups compositions within the family under discussion over specific moments in time.

The revelation of the negative aspects of modernization in agriculture upon women, men and the environment, brought up the need to develop alternative ways of food production establishing new relations with local eco-systems. In this view, the Agroecology has an important contribution because it relates the technological model to the productive aspects, environmental, social and economic, including gender relationships. This study analyses production and reproduction strategies of familial agriculture, identifying potentialities and limits for the development of sustainable agro systems and to the fair gender relationship. This strategies research was made among land workers (men and women), from the region of Abaetetuba – Pará, participants of the Center – “Tecnologias Alternativas Tipiti”. With the result of this research, we found out that the familial agricultural strategies turn to the construction of the agroecologic sustainability instead of the gender equality. This is because of the poor understanding that the transformation of the technological standard has to be related to men and women performance and social position, and that themselves are able to change. We hope to help this process with this study.

A reforma agrária na Amazônia paraense: implicações do processo de interdição de assentamentos rurais na vida de camponeses do Município de Pacajá
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2013-05-27) BRITO, Maria Natália Silva; GUERRA, Gutemberg Armando Diniz; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4262726973211880
This dissertation analysis contradictions of the Agrarian Reform Program in the Amazon from the conjecture that initiated due to interdiction process of rural settlements in this region. Part of the historical agrarian policy in Brazil, verifies and reflects on the maintenance of the founded land structure grounded in this huge property. In the Amazon, the speeches that favored the peasant agriculture, turned into actions that benefited, in fact, the start of this huge capital in this region was through the policy of subsidies and tax fiscal incentives. Since the analysis of the two rural settlements located in the municipality of Pacajá-Pará that were banned by the federal justice in the year of 2007, the settlement of the Anapuzinho and the settlement of the Cupuzal demonstrate a distortion of the agrarian reform. Misconceptions in the bureaucratic procedures performed by the government land agency-the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA) prevented the access of peasants to the official programs. The peasants still maintain in the area despite of the state omission in the formalization of the incorporation of these lands in the productive process of the country and the region.

Resistência e expropriação de famílias na Volta Grande do Xingu: o caso de duas áreas atingidas pela barragem de Belo Monte, Pará, Brasil

This study made it possible to detail the mobilization against the construction of Belo Monte Hydroelectric Dam, from two distinct locations in Volta Grande do Xingu. Twenty six interviews have been made from May to July, 2012. The resistance against the construction of Belo Monte Dam spans over two decades, and it has gone through phases where there were position changes of the actors involved regarding the project, including the civil organizations. Regarding the peasants, these changes have dramatically influenced the way the conflict began, especially because their perception of the project depends upon the experience lived in the cited areas. In the municipality of São Raimundo Nonato and on the rural road connecting Ramal dos Penas, the mobilization turned possible due to the fear of changes, such as, losing their land and their production, the changes in their singular social relations grown in the area, the control in food production; however, such resistance emerged especially in those forced to leave the area, and the confrontations have been undermined fundamentally by the rapid social and environmental transformations after the beginning of the construction. In the areas named Ressaca, Garimpo do Galo and Ilha da Fazenda, one may notice that apart from the issues concerning the dam construction, there is the pressure as a result of the implementation of the mining project named Mineração Volta Grande. These expropriation fronts seem to increase even more the conflicts due to the changes in the construction area and the imminent displacement that may occur because of the mining project. Therefore, this study provides elements to the debate over other large investment projects that have undergone project or construction in the Amazon, followed by the peacemaking debate, the irreducibility in the construction, and consequently the natural displacement of residents for the progress and the common good, that overshadows lives and broaden social injustices.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2006) BRINGEL, Fabiano de Oliveira; GUERRA, Gutemberg Armando Diniz; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4262726973211880
In this dissertation, we discuss the social and economics trajectory of peasants who live in the Project of Rural Settlement Palmares II, located in the brazilian city of Parauapebas, in the southeastern region of Pará. We focuss our analisys in four dimensions of the peasant’s life: the history of migration, the history of the family, the history of the work and the history of education. That way, we intend to establish nexuses and differentiations of economic, social, cultural and political contexts, which those peasants had passed before arriving in the occupation. We try this way to unmask forms and strategies of expropriation that are based on the social and economic disqualification of the peasant, which also are strategies to deny the tipical knowledge of the peasants, capable to guarantee the autonomy of the means of production and, then, threatening the possibilities of accumulation and consolidation of unsustainable economic activities in the Amazon region. The resistance to the disqualification and the requalification finds strenght in the peasant signs and practices, that these individuals keeps throughout generations, as the ownership and the work in the land, the essentially familiar workmanship, the autonomy of the means of production and a life style that values a more direct relation with the nature.
