This dissertation analyzes the trajectory of Agostinho de Souza Moreira, a leader from the interior of Grão-Pará in the early years of Cabanagem (1835-1836). Through the research around this subject, this work aims to address the unfolding of the hut war in the Capim and Guamá rivers, which comprises the parishes of São Domingos da Boa Vista and São Miguel da Cachoeira, and the village of Ourém; in addition to exerting influence in the town of Bragança and in the place of Viseu. In these locations, Agostinho Moreira acted as General Commander with the responsibility of legitimizing the authority of the cabano government in the region. Previously, this guy had stints in the City Council, the Ordinary Court and the National Guard, which allowed him to meet many people, the supervision of the region's production, in addition to the local geography. Historically marked by escapes, by the action of the mocambos, indigenous resistance and military desertions, this region known as the middle of the road between Pará and Maranhão was convulsed in many struggles led by these peoples, who fought for better living conditions and their freedoms, during the 1820s. Thus, from 1836 onwards, when Cabanagem began to radicalize to the interior of Pará, Agostinho Moreira secured notoriety for having control of a region that held the necessary goods for a war economy that threatened the control of the interprovincial authorities who armed themselves heavily in the hunt for the cabano leader. In this sense, we will present the region of Agostinho Moreira's activity marked by crossings and refuges. And then we will analyze his trajectory in search of a place in local power until his rise as a cabano leader, highlighting his organization, his war strategies and his escapes during the anticabana repression. We did this through the search for documentary traces that would lead us to Agostinho Moreira found in letters and correspondence exchanged between authorities, terms of council, and newspaper reports that circulated in the Empire, using the methodology of the indiciary paradigm to identify the action of the amocambados and indigenous people in the period of greatest radicality of the Cabana war.

This thesis is devoted to studying the relationship between the first elections for representatives of the justice of the peace in Grão-Pará and the Cabano movement. Its scope ranges from 1827, with the regulation of this position, until 1833, when the third election for this position took place since its creation and which preceded the Cabano movement. The in-depth study of correspondence between municipal councils, judicial authorities, and provincial presidents, especially those concerning municipal elections, has proven that blacks, indigenous people and mixed-race people mobilized around local elections and assumed important positions in the legal and civil administration of towns, parishes and places in Grão-Pará between 1828 and 1834. It is demonstrated that despite the set of laws inaugurated with the 1824 Charter not extending many of its benefits to this segment of the population, the reality was quite different, since the appropriations made by the new legal devices informed daily struggles for expanding citizenship. This thesis argues, therefore, that the Cabano movement was born out of ethnic and political conflicts that had as an important stage the elections of lay judges. The experience of political mobilization, both in their election, deposition and acclamation, was in constant dialogue with a repertoire of new laws and a constitutional and liberal vocabulary, and was therefore fundamental to the emergence and diversity of dynamics of the Cabano movement. Finally, it is shown that the discussion raised by the Cabano movement in the Court in Rio de Janeiro, about the need to defend an idea of “order” and “civilization”, contributed to the arguments of the “lawyers” for the review of the justice of the peace, which culminated in its national reformulation in 1841.

Belém, uma história da chuva (1890 – 1920)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2023-08-29) GOMES, Kelvyn Werik Nascimento; RICCI, Magda Maria de Oliveira; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4368326880097299
This dissertation aims to explore the history of rain in the city of Belém, in the period from 1890 to 1922, with a specific focus on the influence that this natural phenomenon had on certain groups and the city itself. To achieve this, it examines the interest of various social actors in rain in Belém throughout the 19th century, but primarily in the final years of this century and the early 20th century. This includes the observations made by naturalist travelers who visited the region and observed the rain phenomenon, as well as the insights of memoirists and geographers. The work of naturalist Emilio Goeldi in collecting meteorological data is also highlighted, exploring how the study of rain was related to politics and Goeldi's public image, and how this interest became a significant part of scientific research in the region. This dissertation also focuses on the practical implications of rain in the daily lives of Belém's inhabitants. It examines how rain affected the relationship between the population, the Municipal Intendency, and nature, with an emphasis on attempts to address the population's demands regarding rain, especially in terms of urban transformations that have impacted and continue to affect the city and its residents. The influence of newspapers as mediators between the population and the government regarding rain-related issues is also explored, revealing how the media played a significant role in shaping public opinion and government actions. In conclusion, this dissertation delves into the importance of rain as a complex and multifaceted topic in Belém's history during the studied period, considering its impact on the scientific, political, and social spheres of the city.

This dissertation investigates the life of João Francisco da Cruz, a Black intellectual from the late 19th century, whose trajectory in Pará reveals the complexities of the struggles for citizenship in a society marked by slavery. Focusing on the intersection between his personal narrative and the racial tensions of the time, the study analyzes the role of the press, especially the newspaper Diário de Notícias, in constructing racial representations and ideological battles surrounding the abolition of slavery. In Pará, in the “Solicitados” section of Diário de Notícias, we found triolets that referred to “monkey”, “nigger”, “carafuz” (mulatto person), and “the most petulant Black man”, João da Cruz, used to satirize, mock, and discriminate against men of color. The research identified 102 triolets, 2 steam romances, 1 epigram, 1 sonnet, 2 short poems, 5 riddles, and 1 fable, all involving João da Cruz, between December 1882 and March 1883, reappearing between May and September 1885. From these triolets and other notes about João da Cruz, various related news articles were found, deepening the understanding of his figure. This research aims not only to map João da Cruz's achievements but also to uncover the obstacles faced by Afro-descendants in their quest for recognition and equality. By exploring notarial and periodical sources, the study highlights the strategies of overcoming adopted by João da Cruz and other Afro-descendants in a context of inequality and racial prejudice, contributing to a broader understanding of the history of Afro-descendants in Brazil and their legacies in contemporary society.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2007) SILVA, Gerson Santos e; RICCI, Magda Maria de Oliveira; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4368326880097299
When we apeak about popular culture, come to our thought of the commom sense, music, folklore and dance. We rarelly think in literature, but remember the religiosity that envolve all of these firsts. On that conception we don‟t remember to put the history, or better, the history that was produced for the people that made all of these manifestation and ideas. Here we try to think historically the genesis of a religiousness made in the middle of the Amazon region, with perspective of a sight of the people, the one who refers to when we speak about popular culture. From a site of the countryside of this region, São João de Pirabas city, we tried to see how this religiousness, represents in the nature and from it, to link a wider history with a Portuguese king character, D. Sebastian, religions with shamanism caboclo and afro-brasilian. Beyond the efforts of intelectuals and, also, show these religions from the thoughts of the people who made it, become it the most of the time, and answer, an alternative and at the same time part of the christian religion stabilished to our ancestrals that relaborated, as one the build of their history.

Between battles and printed papers: the Cabanagem and the Brazilian periodicals during the Minority period (1835-1840) proposes a methodological redefining the historical and historiographical construction of the cabanos’s war. Returning to the analysis of some Brazilian periodicals at the first half of the nineteenth century, specifically between the years 1835 and 1840, I argue that the cabanos’s narrative history should be expanded beyond the crafts, proclamations and correspondence between cabanas e anti-cabanas authorities. In this study, the research was done in a rich and diverse list of editorials, articles and notes periodistics printed during the Minority period. They are outside and inside of periodicals of the former Grão-Pará, overturning the myth that – because there was no periodic regularly circulating during cabano‘s episode (1835-1839) – would hardly have to research these News organizations. I also intend to demonstrate, through the analysis of two newspapers of Rio de Janeiro: Correio Official, The Sete d’Abril, and the paraense periodical Treze de Maio (this was born immediately after cabano’s episode in 1840), that the cabano’s narrative war had a national circulation and that such disclosure contributed greatly to the creation of a memory-historical of this Amazonian movement in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Grão-Pará, during the first half of the 19th century, had a period of intensive social disturbances and political crisis. During twenty years the province was emerged in two revolutionary processes which implied on significant changes, principally on political and representative structures, namely, the Independence and Cabanagem movement. Both processes can be represented as a variety of political ideas and specific social projects, creating a plural profile of multiple meanings and the idea of a heterogeneous movement. These particularities in the Grão-Pará's political scenario of the Independence and Cabanagem movement allow us to understand these processes through its multiplicity of projects and political acts on the médio Amazonas. From these projects we can see the importance of fight for the political-administrative separation of the Alto-Amazonas from the province of Grão-Pará to create the province of Rio Negro. This project was based on the local elite ideas and on the population interests. To the local elite the question of to separate or not from the Grão-Pará was as important as to separate or not from Portugal was to the elite of Belém. However, if the elites would fight to increase its domain, the population, specially the tapuias, often would also fight for more space, power and rights. Given this context, we propose on this study to understand how these ideas were developed during the revolutionary process of the first half of the 19th century, analyzing the presented projects in the political scenarion of the Grão-Pará considering on the background the Independence and Cabanagem movement.

“Germes de grandeza”: Antônio Ladislau Monteiro Baena e a descrição de uma província do Norte durante a formação do Império brasileiro (1823-1850)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2006) BARROS, Michelle Rose Menezes de; RICCI, Magda Maria de Oliveira; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4368326880097299
The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the corpus of the portuguese writer Antônio Ladislau Monteiro Baena as well as his military work in the Province of Pará in the first decades of Nineteenth Century. Through physical and political description of the Pará‟s Province, Antônio Baena provided statistic data of political use for the Brazilian Empire. The writer and military man Baena, working for the Empire, lived and wrote in a singular moment in Brazil and the old Grão Pará. His writings gather together a great amount of information wich will help to explain the tense connection between the provinces of North and South Brazil. Starting with his book Ensaio Corográfico sobre a Província do Pará, published in 1839, our study tries to show the author‟s political agenda as well as the main considerations about the potential wealth of the province, based in the variety and qualities of its natural products. Furthermore, this analyse deals with other works of Baena, whose principal theme was the Province of Pará, inputed in the Review of Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute and published in the imperial era. The articles in the Review end up being part of the debates of the Institute aforementioned, during the period of political definition of the Brazilian Empire.

Indigenous peoples who inhabited the valley of the Amazon during the period of Portuguese colonization were submitted at disctints times by different agents and various instruments, the incisors acculturation processes aimed at inserting the "civilized" world. As the use of humane letters understood the practice of reading and writing in the portuguese language the most evident. For a century (1650-1750) the Society of Jesus stood out among the regular orders who settled in the region such as that implemented more villages missionary catechesis aimed beyond the teaching of humane letters to the native peoples. In the second half of the eighteenth century in the context of the "Pombal Age" the State Luso, especially from the letters and reports of Francisco Xavier de Mendonça Furtado Governor of Grand Para and Maranhao between 1751 and 1759, officially denounced the view that the lamentable "state school" in the Amazon Valley evidenced in disregard of the missionary orders of the Jesuits in general and in particular with the teaching of the native subjects of the King. Proof of this most uncomfortable reality was the massive use of so-called General Language at the expense of the Portuguese language. Given this reality, and considering that the use of Portuguese language was the "cornerstone of civility" as expressed in the text directory that should be observed in the villages of the Indians of Para and Maranhao, The State encompasses and assumes the task of promoting teaching of humane letters in Villages, Towns and Places of the Amazon Valley. Job's successor Governor Mendonça Furtado Manuel Bernardo de Mello e Castro (1759-1761) will make great effort and personal commitment to fulfill, given the enormous structural and conjucture obstacles that presented themselves. This dissertation aims essential "better understand" these events, scrutinizing the process, highlighting their struggles and reflecting on their consequences for the indigenous people who experienced it.

This thesis combines a significant Belém’s Urbanisation Plan –developed in the 1940’s by the urban planner and mayor Jeronimo Cavalcanti with social, political and economic struggles of an era of many changes in the Amazon, in Brazil and in the Western world. The Plan was elaborated during the Second World War, at the time of the Washington Agreements and during the Estado Novo. Suddenly, the Amazon began to occupy a central place in the Vargas policy, bringing a kind of a nostalgia for the golden age of rubber as well as a kind of a impression that the new moment was very specific and different. There was a French pattern and after that there was a North American standard; there were trams, zeppelin buses, rails, asphalt, Italian pallazi, skyscrapers. Everything was related to modernization, but everything seemed very different: the models had become. The urban planner who has accepted that challenge was known in circles of engineering and architecture in Rio de Janeiro; however, he was inept in the political field. His plan provided the complete restructuring of the city, ranging from the modernization of the supply industry and markets, to profound changes in public services, transport and roads. However, Cavalcanti and his ideas did not resist the simplest political crisis. Despite the short time as a mayor and his precarious political tact, his plan left roots and worth to be remembered especially because it occurred in a historic moment of construction and affirmation of Urbanism as a scientific field of power in Brazil and, especially, in the Amazon. His ideas were often referenced and, in important moments, developed, even if people did not agree with them. However, its early history was still unclear. This thesis based on many sources, but especially in newspapers and period reports discusses the old and new debates between Belle Époque’s Belém and the new Belém created by the urban planner Cavalcanti.

This study covers indigenous participation in the Cabanagem Revolution. From a historical narrative, this thesis sets out to understand the Cabanagem Revolution that took place in Amazon backlands based on the indigenous protagonism around the actions of three ethnic groups, the Mura, the Munduruku and the Mawé. Inhabitants and masters of an immense area, the interfluve of the Madeira, Tapajós and Amazonas rivers, these indigenous people have printed their cultural marks with their arts of war and own interests, leading the cabanagem battles in the interior of the province towards increasingly radicalized directions, shaping their territory into a Cabano Quadrilateral. Through ancestral knowledge of forest, the indigenous people were able to act in an imperative way, determining in a large extent the advances and setbacks of the Cabanagem Revolution. In this sense, within a chronological arrangement, the thesis develops its narrative supporting its main argument that the Cabanagem lasted so long, leading to a process that was difficult to resolve due to its radicalization by the effective indigenous participation. Throughout the eight chapters the thesis is based, showing how indigenous actions from the second half of the 18th century, but especially 1790, and in the first two decades of the 19th century, went through a process of reworking their ways of opposing the colonial project. Thus, in the 1830s, their actions were radicalized, broking with the institutional channels of resolving their issues, and deciding for armed struggle, taking part in the civil war that broke out in Grão-Pará. Using the method of the indicative paradigm and the methodology of Ethnohistory, we located, through the traces left in the documentation, the indigenous evidence in the Cabanagem built in the Amazon backlands.

This The present dissertation analyzes the creation of Law nº 26 of September 22, 1835, which suspended in the province of Pará the § 6º, 7º, 8º, 9º and 10º paragraphs of Article 179 of the Constitution for a period of six months, as an extraordinary measure taken by the deputies and senators of the Brazilian Parliament to contain the “revolt” hut, as well as the sending of two highly respected marshals (Jorge Rodrigues and Soares d’Andrea) to restore the imperial order in the province, using the said Law as a strategy in war against the huts. Thus, this dissertation goes beyond the understanding of the discussions in the Parliament between the deputies and senators that led to the creation of the Law, but also aims to understand how the marshals Jorge Rodrigues and Soares d’Andrea interpreted and used the Law in the fight against cabins Finally, he analyzes the strategies of “pacification” and repression in the province of Pará created by Soares d’Andrea during his government, such as recruitment for the police guard and the corps of workers and resistance to these recruitments.

In this dissertation, speeches, images and practices of Baptists present in the Brazilian Amazon Basin from 1970 to 1980, as recorded in articles from The Baptist Journal and other printed and oral sources, are analyzed from a Social Historical perspective. This study demonstrates that the missionary action of Baptists and their desire to be accepted and expand into newly colonized areas, namely, cities, agricultural villages, and rural towns created along the Transamazon Highway, was benefited in the 1970‟s by the actions of the federal government. Also emphasized is the distinctiveness of the Baptists in relation to other competing religious groups in the Amazon Basin that claimed to support the military dictatorship.

This thesis discusses the occupation of the border between Pará and Maranhão from 1790 to 1852. More specifically analyzes the meetings and clashes between colonizers and the various residents around there were or who arrived in the region in the period. To be detached, the firstly, the onslaughts of portuguese colonial government in order to make the region colonized by people "useful" to the royal interests. In the process, opened up roads, lifted up towns and villagesa, besides donate land by date letter of allotment for cattle and agriculture production. However, parallel to the abundance and potential riches of the earth, always came to search for the required "control" over local populations. This process "colonizer" win force from Francisco de Souza Coutinho administration in Pará, but also received, in this time, a lot of guys not "desired". Were new villagers and transferred indigenous, black africans, and many poor whites and mestizos men, some being banished, other military servers and more fugitives. This place - enormous ethnic and cultural diversity center - became a melting pot of gunpowder into two big uprisings: the first in 1824, in the context of the independence struggles and the other in 1835, with the Cabanagem. The approach of this thesis ends in early 1850, not because the people no more went up, but because finally the dispute of imperial administration decides to spend the region to Maranhão protection and dispute focuses gained new contours and dimensions that would extrapolate this investigation.
