The diversity and abundance of blow flies in three environments (anthropic gaps, tree-fall gaps, and primary "terra firme" forest) of Porto Urucu/AM were evaluated in annual collects realized in 2004, 2005, and 2006. During these three years were collected 2,121 specimens belonging to 14 species. The most abundant species were Chloroprocta idioidea (Robineau- Desvoidy), Eumesembrinella randa (Walker), and Hemilucilia semidiaphana (Rondani). Primary forests and tree-fall gaps enviroments, showed higher blow flies abundance than anthropic gaps, with diversity and equitability index higher than anthropic gaps, when the dominance value was high.

A new species and new records of Oxysarcodexia Townsend (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) from Brazil
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2017-12) CARVALHO-FILHO, Fernando da Silva; SOUSA, José Roberto Pereira de; ESPOSITO, Maria Cristina
Oxysarcodexia cocais sp. nov. from Brazil is described and illustrated based on male specimens collected in a babassu palm forest in the state of Maranhão. The remarkable elongated surstylus (as long as cercus) and U-shaped male sternite 5 distinguishes the new species from other species in the genus. In addition, Oxysarcodexia nitida Soares & Mello-Patiu, 2010 is recorded for the first time from Brazil, and Oxysarcodexia adunca Lopes, 1975 is a new record from the Brazilian Amazon

On the taxonomic status of Nephochaetopteryx calida (Wiedemann) (Diptera, Sarcophagidae)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2013-06) CARVALHO FILHO, Fernando da Silva; ESPOSITO, Maria Cristina; MELLO-PATIU, Cátia Antunes de
On the taxonomic status of Nephochaetopteryx calida (Wiedemann) (Diptera, Sarcophagidae). Based on analysis of the holotype of Nephochaetopteryx calida (Wiedemann) it was concluded that this species does not belong to Nephochaetopteryx. The holotype is a female partly damaged and it was not possible to place it in one of Sarcophaginae genera, remaining as Sarcophaga calida Wiedemann, 1830, incertae sedis.

Redescription of Pseudopomyzella flava Hennig (Diptera: Cypselosomatidae) and the first record from Brazil
(2011) CARVALHO FILHO, Fernando da Silva; ESPOSITO, Maria Cristina
Cypselosomatidae is composed of Cypselosomatinae and Pseudopomyzinae, including 11 extant genera. Only the genus Rhinopomyzella Hennig (Pseudopomyzinae) has been previously recorded from Brazil, represented by two species from Santa Catarina. The genus Pseudopomyzella Hennig is comprised of a single species, Pseudopomyzella flava Hennig, previously found only in Peru and Ecuador. Here, we report P. flava for the first time from Brazil (Pará) and redescribe the species based on the specimens collected.

Reproductive phenology of Mauritia flexuosa L. (Arecaceae) in a coastal restinga environment in northeastern Brazil
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2017-03) MENDES, Fernanda Nogueira; VALENTE, Roberta de Melo; RÊGO, Márcia Maria Corrêa; ESPOSITO, Maria Cristina
The buriti, Mauritia flexuosa, is the most common palm in Brazil, where it has considerable ecological and economic importance. However, few data are available on the phenology of the species, mainly in coastal restinga ecosystems. The present study monitored the reproductive phenology of M. flexuosa in the restinga of Barreirinhas, in the Brazilian Northeast, and investigated the relationship between phenophases and climatic variables. The presence/absence of flowers and fruits was recorded monthly in 25 individuals of each sex between August, 2009, and October, 2012. There was no difference in the phenology of male and female specimens, with flowering and fruiting occurring exclusively in the dry season. We believe that the specific abiotic characteristics of the study environment, such as the intense sunlight and availability of water in the soil, contribute to the reproductive success of M. flexuosa in the dry season, with consequent germination and establishment of seedlings occurring during the subsequent rainy season
