Adsorção de molibdato em minerais de argilas naturais e modificadas com ácido sulfúrico, ácido húmico e uréia
(2013-03) PEREIRA, Patrícia Magalhães; LEMOS, Vanda Porpino; RODRIGUES, E.; FAIAL, Kelson do Carmo Freitas
Clay sediments from the municipalities Assis Brazil (Acre), were leached with solutions of sulfuric acid, humic acid and urea, to evaluate the retention capacity of molybdate in these materials and to investigate the feasibility of the adsorption processes at solid-solution interfaces. The materials were characterized from data of XRD, FTIR spectra, surface charge and chemical composition. The Langmuir isotherm models, Freundlich and Sips were used to fit the experimental data of adsorption. The minerals identified in the clay sediments were smectite, kaolinite, illite, quartz, albite, calcite and microclineo. The chemical modification leads amorphization of the modified sample with sulfuric acid and delamination along the plane 001 of the modified sample with urea. The settings defined by mathematical parameters (KL,Kf) of the adsorption isotherms, evaluation Ce vs. qe, pH vs. Qe, Qmax (sips) and Kd, indicated that the S10H15 sample is more efficient in the adsorption MoO42- ,with com qMax = 6.83 mg. L-1.

Assessment of surface water in two Amazonian rivers impacted by industrial wastewater, Barcarena City, Pará State (Brazil)
(2011-08) LIMA, Marcelo de Oliveira; SANTOS, Elisabeth Conceição de Oliveira; JESUS, Iracina Maura de; MEDEIROS, Adaelson Campelo; FAIAL, Kelson do Carmo Freitas; ALVES, Claudio Nahum
In 2007, surface waters were collected from 21 sampling points in Barcarena City in Northern Region of Brazil: one sampling point located in a stream that receives discharge of wastewater from a kaolin processing industry and flows into the Curuperê River, three sampling points located near sources that emerge on the left bank and flow into the Curuperê River, nine sampling points in Curuperê River, which flows into the Dendê River, and eight in Dendê River, a tributary on the right bank of the Pará River. For all water samples were quantified 14 physicochemical variables and levels of 12 metals. The results in the points near the sources of the Curuperê River presented physicochemical profile and metal levels which are typical of surface waters being used as reference to compare and identify possible changes in the chemical characteristics of the other sampling points. The comparison between the results obtained for the sources of the Curuperê River and the ones for the point near the discharge of industrial wastewater revealed strong changes in the values of 6 physicochemical variables (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), sulfate (SO4), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH4-N) and salinity) and an increase in magnitude of the levels of four metals (Al, Fe, Mn and Zn). These facts characterized that the wastewaters were discharged into the environment without adequate treatment. Results in other sampling sites showed that these anomalous conditions were also found along the Curuperê and Dendê Rivers, especially during low tide. This chemical characterization of the waters allowed to identify harmful conditions to aquatic ecosystems and potential health risk for the local people, who use the rivers for drinking water, recreation and transportation.

Avaliação econômica de três tipos de suplementação mineral para bovinos de corte no Estado do Pará
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016-07) BARBOSA, Francisberto Batista; BOMJARDIM, Henrique dos Anjos; HELAYEL, Michel José Sales Abdalla; FAIAL, Kelson do Carmo Freitas; OLIVEIRA, Carlos Magno Chaves; MALAFAIA, Pedro Antônio Muniz; BRITO, Marilene de Farias; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes
Three alternatives of mineral supplementation of 18 to 20-month-old male Nelore cattle with 299.5 to 308.5 kg of body weight were used at a farm in northeast of Pará state, Brazil. To evaluate which mineral mixture resulted in better cost-benefit, three groups of 20 head were supplemented for six months, from March to August of 2012. Group 1 was supplemented with a selected mineral mixture (SMM) composed of 25kg NaCl, 50kg dicalcium phosphate, 190g copper sulphate, 60g cobalt sulphate, and 15g sodium selenite, having 133g Na, 123g P, 631mg Cu, 167mg Co, and 9mg Se per kg; this mixture was made based in previous clinical-nutritional examination of herd. Group 2 (control), supplemented only with NaCl; and group 3 received a commercial mineral mixture (CMM), routinely used in this farm, with 130g P, 220g Ca, 18g Mg, 36g S, 6000mg Zn, 1500mg Cu, 2000mg Mn, 200mg Co, 90mg I, and 36mg Se per kg. Concentrations of phosphorus, copper, zinc and iron were determined in liver and 12th ribs. The best cost-benefit alternative was the SMM; the forage alone did not contain enough Co to meet the requirements of the control group, but provided enough P, Cu, Zn and Se during the five months of the experiment.

Piper arboreum Aubl. var. arboreum and P. tuberculatum Jacq. (Piperaceae), both known as “pimenta-longa”, are frequently misidentified. Despite the fact that both species are sold as traditional phytotherapeutic products, there are no reports on their quality control. The aim of this study was to prepare and characterize leaf and stem herbal drugs of both species using standard methods aiming to establish parameters for botanical authentication and purity degree for their quality control. Size, shape, color, taste, texture, fracture surface and transection characteristics, and leaf venation patterns are macroscopic diagnostic characters useful to distinguish the herbal drugs when they are not powdered. The following characters are useful for diagnostic purposes of the powdered herbal drugs: cuticular and epicuticular wax patterns, types of trichomes, and wall thickening of the tracheary elements, and shape of the hilum of the starch grains. Emergences are key morphological markers for P. tuberculatum herbal drugs. Physicochemical parameter values were similar in herbal drugs of both species, except acid-insoluble ash value which was higher in the P. arboreum var. arboreum stem herbal drugs. Piper arboreum var. arboreum herbal drugs had the highest metal concentrations. Al, Cu, Mn and V concentrations were the highest, whereas Cd, Co and Hg concentrations were the lowest in the herbal drugs of both species. The results obtained can be used as quality control parameters for the herbal drugs of both species.

A study of mineral deficiencies was performed in lactating cows from dairy herds belonging to 13 farms of Rondon do Pará, state of Pará, Brazil. We determined the levels of phosphorus (P) in the bone and levels of copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) in the liver of 47 dairy cows in lactation 2. The samples were collected by means of biopsies taken on the top third of the 12th rib of the right side and the caudal edge of the caudate liver lobe, respectively. The herds were composed of crossbred (Holstein x Zebu) cattle, kept in extensive production system on Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pasture and received mineral supplementation. The mineral mixture on 12 farms were commercial type, called "full" and the owners added a quantity of salt above the manufacturer's recommendations on ten farms. The mineral mixtures were provided in troughs without covering on seven farms and on other eight, providing of the mineral mix was not performed daily. On 11 farms there were clinical histories consistent with mineral deficiencies in livestock, and placenta retention and osteophagia were the most frequently reported ones. The results of chemical analysis showed deficiency of P on five farms, of Co on three farms, of Se on nine farms and of Zn on ten farms. It is concluded that the mineral supplementation performed on the farms do not supply the daily demands of P, Se and Co, based on the estimated daily consumption of 30g of NaCl per animal; the little adequate or inadequate troughs for proper supplementation, as well as inconstant supply of mineral mixtures contribute to the deficiency of one or more minerals.

Morphoanatomical and physicochemical profile of Piper callosum: valuable assessment for its quality control
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2017-02) SILVA, Rolf Junior Ferreira; DIAS, Ana Cristina Andrade de Aguiar; FAIAL, Kelson do Carmo Freitas; QUEIROZ, Maria Silvia de Mendonça
Piper callosum Ruiz & Pav., Piperaceae, popularly known as “elixir-paregórico” and “matricá” in Brazil, is used in folk medicine to treat gonorrhea, general pain, and digestive disorders, and has repellent, astringent, diuretic, depurative, and haemostatic properties. Despite the fact that this plant is sold as a traditional phytotherapeutic product, we did not find reports on its quality control. We, therefore, performed macroscopic, microscopic, histochemical, and physicochemical analyses using standard methods to establish botanical authentication and purity degree parameters for leaves and stem of this species in two forms: medicinal plant and herbal drug. We observed the size, shape, color, texture, fracture surface and transection characteristics, leaf venation patterns, and calluses are valuable diagnostic characters to identify the herbal drugs when they are not ground or powdered. Since medicinal plants and herbal drugs did not differ anatomically, the following key anatomical characters for P. callosum can be used for diagnostic purposes of both types raw plant materials: epicuticular wax and cuticular flanges patterns; collenchyma features; fibers in the midrib; arrangement pattern of the vascular bundles of the midrib and petiole; shape of the midrib, leaf margin, petiole, and stem; occurrence of raphides; and morphology of the starch grains. Acid lipids, essential oils, oleoresins, steroids, tannins and flavonoids were histochemically identified. Total ash (leaves: 11.25%; stem: 5.25%), sulphated ash (leaves: 68.02%; stem: 12.50%), acid-insoluble ash (leaves: 2.82%; stem: 0.27%), moisture (leaves: 8.60%; stem: 6.10%), loss on drying (leaves: 11.08%; stem: 8.58%), and pH (leaves: 5.57, stem: 5.28) values were determined. The order of analyzed metal levels in leaf and stem herbal drugs was Al > V > Cu > Mn > Cr > Ni. Similar levels of Cd and Co and low levels of Hg were found. The results obtained can be used as quality control parameters for medicinal plants and herbal drugs of P. callosum.

(2011-03) PINHEIRO, Cleyton Prado; BOMJARDIM, Henrique dos Anjos; ANDRADE, Stefano Juliano Tavares de; FAIAL, Kelson do Carmo Freitas; OLIVEIRA, Carlos Magno Chaves; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes
The study comprised 104 adults buffaloes, without distinction of race and sex, reared extensively, without supplementation, in native pastures of low nutritional quality, in the municipalities of Breves, Cachoeira do Arari, Salvaterra and Soure, Marajo Island, Pará. Samples of liver, bone and blood were collected from 26 animals in the municipality of Salvaterra, from 38 animals in the municipality of Soure, from 20 animals in the municipality of Breves and from 20 animals in the municipality of Cachoeira do Arari. Determination of the levels of phosphorus in the blood serum and bone ash, and of the specific gravity of bone, and of cobalt, copper and zinc in liver tissue were performed. The average phosphorus concentrations in blood serum (6.26mg/dl) and bone (10.77%), the percentage of ash (60.87%) and specific gravity (1.59g/ml) of bone were lower than the critical levels established for cattle, characterizing phosphorus deficiency. The average concentrations of copper (5.57ppm) and zinc (27.05ppm) was considered low when compared with reference values, characterizing deficiency for these elements. In the case of cobalt when considering the detectable and undetectable values by the methodology, it was observed that 51.92% of the animals had levels below the reference, indicating the occurrence of cobalt deficiency in these animals. It is emphasized that the deficiencies of copper and zinc were the most severe since all animals studied showed deficient levels of these elements.

(2014-11) DUARTE, Marcos Dutra; BEZERRA JÚNIOR, Pedro Soares; LIMA, Danillo Henrique da Silva; BOMJARDIM, Henrique dos Anjos; OLIVEIRA, Carlos Magno Chaves; SILVA, Natália da Silva e; FAIAL, Kelson do Carmo Freitas; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes
This paper reports an outbreak of salt poisoning in sheep on a farm in the state of Pará, northern Brazil. Eight (1.46%) animals were affected from a total of 545 sheep and four (50%) of them died. The evaluation of the facilities and the handling indicated as predisposing factors excessive intake of the mineral supplement and water restriction. The main clinical signs were recumbency, decrease or absence of cutaneous sensibility, absence of auricular, palpebral and menace reflex, mydriasis, nystagmus, opisthotonus, spasticity of limbs, somnolence and stupor. Beside these signs bloat, diarrhea, tachypnea, tachycardia, dehydration and polyuria were observed. The course of the disease in animals that died ranged from two hours and a half to 48 hours. The medium of serum concentration of sodium and potassium of 31 sheep from the same group affected on samples collected during the outbreak revealed hypernatremia (190mEq/l) and hyperkalemia (8.2mEq/l). At necropsy, there was flattening of the cerebral gyri in one sheep; in this animal was found vacuolization of the neuropil in the cerebral cortex with moderate intensity in the intermediary and mild on the superficial layers, with increased perineural and perivascular spaces. In these areas there were markedly swollen nucleus of astrocytes with acute neuronal necrosis. The dosage of sodium in the brain of a sheep revealed a high value of 3.513ppm. The diagnosis was made based on the epidemiology, clinical signs, macro and microscopic lesions and in the dosages of sodium in serum and brain.

In order to study copper, zinc and iron concentration in the liver of buffaloes with paratuberculosis (PTB), 13 buffalo cows above three years of age of the Murrah and Mediterranean races or their crosses were used. They originated from two farms in the municipalities of São Luís and São Mateus, state of Maranhão, Brazil. The animals were selected according to clinical signs of paratuberculosis, as diarrhea, dehydration and submandibular edema. Rectal biopsies for detection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) through PCR in real time (qPCR) and Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) stain were performed on all animals. Seven buffaloes revealed positive and six were negative for PTB. They were separated into two groups: Group 1 contained seven buffaloes positive for paratuberculosis, and Group 2 contained six animals negative for paratuberculosis. They were euthanized and postmortem examination was performed for the collection of various tissue samples to be fixed in 10% formalin for histopathology; also liver tissue samples were collected to be frozen for chemical analysis of trace minerals (Cu, Zn and Fe). Postmortem showed that all buffaloes with PTB had brown colored mesenteric lymphnodes, indicating hemosiderosis. One buffalo had brown spots on the mucosa of the small intestine. Histopathology revealed moderate to severe hemosiderosis of the spleen in buffaloes of Group 1. All animals positive for PTB showed micromineral levels below the reference values. The average Cu concentration in buffaloes with PTB was only 18.0ppm and the one of Zn only 68.6ppm. In Group 2, negative for PTB, the average Cu concentration was 113.7ppm and the one of Zn 110.0ppm. Fe concentrations in buffaloes of both groups were high (>669ppm). The analysis of trace elements in the liver confirmed copper deficiency, but also showed low levels of zinc and high levels of iron. Based on clinical and pathological findings, and the micromineral concentrations found in the liver, it is concluded that paratuberculosis could lead to mineral deficiency and worsen the clinical condition of the buffaloes.
