Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Environmental changes in the western Amazônia: morphological framewor, geochemistry, palynology and radiocarbon dating data(2011-09) HORBE, Adriana Maria Coimbra; BEHLING, Hermann; NOGUEIRA, Afonso César Rodrigues; MAPES, RussellThe sediments from the Coari lake, a “terra firme” lake sculpted into Plio-Pleistocene deposits, and the Acará lake, a flooding-type lake developed on Quaternary sediments in the floodplain of the mid-Solimões river, in the western Amazônia, Brazil, were studied to investigate the environmental condition of their developing. This study includes mineral composition, geochemistry, Pb isotope, palinology, radiocarbon-age and morphological framework of the lakes obtained from SRTM satellite images. The geological and the environmental conditions in the two lakes are highly variable and suggest that their evolution reflect autogenic processes under humid rainforest condition. Although kaolinite, quartz, muscovite, illite, and smectite are the main minerals in both lakes, the geochemistry indicates distinct source, the Acará lake sediments have higher concentrations of Al2O3, Fe2O3, FeO, CaO, K2O, MgO, Na2O, P2O5, Ba, V, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Sr, Li, Y and La and have more radiogenic Pb than the Coari lake sediments. Based on the structures described in the profiles (N5, igarapé Bahia, Camoaí, Outeiro and Mosqueiro), it has been Possible to distinguish four differents horizons: fresh crust, partially-weathered crust, weathered crust and soil. The fresh crust is compact, vacuolar and composed of iron and aluminium oxyhydroxides. The partially-weathered crust is made up of fresh-crust relicts enclosed in yellowish or reddish clayey matrix, depending on the mineralogical composition of the fresh crust. The weathered crust is characterized by dominance of clayey matrix in relation to relicts, while the soil is composed exclusively of clayey material. The structures of the profiles show that the change from fresh crust to the overlying soil is gradual with volume expansion at the beginning of the fragmentat ion processes. This expansion is followed by the collapse of the profile as the relicts are entirely transformed into an earthy micro-aggregated material. The profiles of N5 and Igarapé Bahia prospects have been derived from a mature iron-aluminous crust, being characterized by the highest contents of kaolinite and hematite either in the crust or in the relícts. Gibbsite Al-goethite, anatasse and quartz are concentrated in the soil, which tends to be initially bauxitic, at the base of the profile, and to become kaolinite-rich toward the top. The mineralogical changes led to chemical modifications such as decrease in Fe2O3 and 8iO2 and increase in Al2O3, TiO2 and PF. The trace elements (V, Cr, Ni, R, Mo, Zr, Ga, Sc, Y, Mn, Cu and Pb besides Au in the profile of Igarapé Bahia) and REE's exhibit concentrations of 8 and Zr whereas the remaining ones tend to be progressively diluted from the crust toward the soil. The TiO2-mass balance shows that the transformation of the crust into soil took place by means of leaching of SiO2 and Fe2O3 in two profiles above mentioned, while Al2O2 underwent enrichment in the profile of N5 and leaching in the profile of igarapé Bahia. The soil formation from a mature aluminous crust in Camoaí differs from those described in the profile of Igarapé Bahia and of N5 in that it shows a decrease in gibbsite contents and an increase in kaolinite and quartz, whereas the verey low contents of ,hematite, goethite, and anatase do not present a characteristic distribution. The trace elements and the REE's, with contents much lower than those observed in the others profiles, show an increase in Zr and Mn toward the soil horizon and a dilution of the remaining ones. In the Camoaí, the transformation of the aluminous crust into soil, based on the TiO2-mass balance, took place through leaching of Al2O3 and enrichment in SiO2 and Fe2O3. In the profiles of Outeiro and Mosqueiro, deriveci from immature silicoferruginous lateritic crust the soil formation occurred by means of decreasing in hematite+goethite so that, in the resulting soil, quartz and kaolinite predominate. In consequence of this, a decrese in the Fe2O3 contents and an increase in SiO2 and Al2O3 have been observed in those profiles. The trace elements distribution presents, as in igarapé concentration of Zr and dilution of the remaining ones. Based on TiO2-mass balance, it could be noticed that the transformation of the crust in the profiles of Mosqueiro and Outeiro took place through leaching of Fe2O3, whereas SiO2 and Al2O3 underwent enrichment in the profile of Outeiro and Leaching in the one of Mosqueiro. On the basis of structures, mineralogical composition and geochemical data of the profiles, it has been possible to characterize an accentuated process of Fe loss in the iron-aluminous and in the silicoferruginous crust as well as Ai removal in the aluminous ones what led to soil generation. In the profiles derived from the iron-aluminous and the silicoferruginous crust, it has been observed substitution of hematite by Al-goethite, an intermediated segment - where there is predominance of gibbsite in the iron-aluminous profiles -- and presence of kaolinite at the top of both profiles. In every profiles, it has been reported quartz acumulation. The enrichment in quartz and the S1O2 being the latter likely come from externai sources -via vegetable-material decay - caused the neoformation of kaolinite from gibbsite in the profiles of N5, igarapé Bahia, and Camoaí. In the profiles of Mosqueiro and Outeiro the kaolinite presence in the soil is a consequence of its relative enrichment in the relation to the crust from which it has been derived. As a consequence of the mineralogical transformation, Fe has been leached from the profiles of N5, Igarapé Bahia, Mosqueiro, and Outeiro and Al from those of the Camoaí, as well as V, Cr, Mo, Ga, Sc, Cu, Pb and REErs. On the other hand, a strong enrichment in Zr and, in part, in 8 and Mn has been reported in every stud ied profiles. The transformations that caused the break down of the balance of the crusts, their desmantlement and comminution, forming relicts and a new clayey mineral phase, are consequence of organic matter influence which turns the environments conditions more acid and less oxidizing, in a process similar to that of weathering-profiles formation in humid tropical environments. The mineral and chemical difference observed between the profiles are consequence of compositional variation of the crusts which, in part, also reflect the degree of maturity of theirs. The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the soils in the investigated profiles allow us to correlate them to the Belterra Clay and, in consequence of this, to admit that Belterra Clay had an autochthonous origin in relation to the underlying lateritic crusts.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Geoquímica das águas do médio e baixo rio Madeira e seus principais tributários - Amazonas - Brasil(Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia, 2013-12) HORBE, Adriana Maria Coimbra; QUEIROZ, Maria Mireide Andrade; MOURA, Candido Augusto Veloso; GALARZA TORO, Marco AntônioThe aim of this paper was study the water of the Madeira River and its tributaries, between the city of Humaitá and its confluence in the Amazon River. There were analyzed: pH, conductivity, turbidity, major ions, trace elements and strontium isotopes during the dry and wet seasons and also, in the transition from the wet to the dry season, throughout 2009 and 2010. The white waters from the Madeira River are bicarbonated, calcic, with pH between 5 and 6 and the ions concentrations are higher than those of the tributaries. The waters of the tributaries are black, are more acidic and are chemically heterogeneous; those from the left margin are chemically similar to the waters of Madeira River, while those from the right margin are enriched in dissolved SiO2. The concentrations of cations, Cl- and NO3- are higher during the wet season due to the contribution of soils, vegetation and the rainwater composition (Cl-), while HCO3-, SO42-, Al, Br e P are concentrated in the dry season, and their higher contents may be related to the bedrock. The higher concentrations of SiO2 and rare earth elements in both dry and wet season are related to vegetation, soil and rocks. The interaction of these factors causes the chemical heterogeneity of the water. However, the chemical similarities between the water tributaries of the left margin and the water of the Madeira River, are probably, consequence of the Andean rocks be the sources of the Cenozoic sedimentary rocks percolated by these tributaries while the chemistry water of the tributaries of the right margin are in accordance with the tectonic stability, the intense weathering and the low erosion rate of the Amazon craton.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Hidroquímica do rio Solimões na região entre Manacapuru e Alvarães: Amazonas - Brasil(Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia, 2009) QUEIROZ, Maria Mireide Andrade; HORBE, Adriana Maria Coimbra; SEYLER, Patrick Thierry; MOURA, Candido Augusto VelosoThe present study evaluated the physical and chemical characteristics of the water of the rivers Solimões, Purus and their tributaries, collected in November of 2004 in the State of Amazonas between the cities of Manacapuru and Alvarães and Anamã and Pirarauara. Physical-chemical analyses (temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, Ca2+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, HCO3-, SO42-, Cl-), and trace-elements (Li, B, Al, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Sb, Cs, Ba, Pb, La, Ce e U) and Sr isotopes were accomplished. The analyzed parameters and the chemical composition show that the waters of the rivers and tributaries of the central region of the Amazonia are chemically distinct between them. The white waters of Solimões are calcium-bicarbonate and of Purus are bicarbonates, and the respectives tributaries are sodium-potassium-bicarbonate and sodium-potassium-sulphate. This causes the white poorly acided waters to the neutrals and more conductives, while the black ones are less mineralized, more acids, mainly of Purus. The Ba, Sr, Cu, V e As in highest levels differentiate the Solimões white waters of the Purus`s waters, well as the tributaries of the first related to the second. This complex of caracteristics indicates that the Solimões as the Purus and their respectives tributaries are submitted to geological/ambiental distinct conditions. The influence of arrives in port of sediments of Andes is diluted at the currency of basin of the Solimões and it reflects on formation of fertile valleys Solimões and Purus. By another view, the crust rocks, represented by the Shields of the Guianas and Brasileiro both contribute, but in a reduced proportion.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Mineralogia e química dos sedimentos de fundo do médio e baixo Madeira e de seus principais tributários: Amazonas - Brasil(Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia, 2011) QUEIROZ, Maria Mireide Andrade; HORBE, Adriana Maria Coimbra; MOURA, Candido Augusto VelosoThis study reports the granulometric, mineralogic and chemical analyses, including Pb isotope, carried out on the bottom sediments of the Madeira River, whose headwaters are in the Andes Mountain, and its tributaries that come from the cratonic region, in order to investigate the compositional variation of the sediments transported by the major rivers of the Amazon. The analytical data show that the bottom sediments of the Madeira River have higher amounts of sand and quartz, and lower contents of Al2O3, Fe2O3, K2O, MgO, Na2O, PF, TiO2O, P2O5, MnO and trace elements, and the maturity increases toward downstream. Among the tributaries, the bottom sediments from Machado and, secondarily, Marmelos rivers are those that more closely match the composition of the sediments of Madeira River. The sediments of Jamari River, with higher proportion of Ti2O, Zr, Y, Nb, Ga, Hf, U, Ta and REE, are quite distinct. In spite of the intense weathering and erosion, in humid tropical conditions, that the rocks drained by the Madeira river basin have been submitted, the Th/Co, Th/Pb, Th/Yb, Al/Pb, Zr/Co ratios and Pb isotope data indicate that different sources contributed to the bottom sediments. It is suggested that mafic rocks are the main source of the sediments of the Madeira River, while felsic rocks are the source of the tributaries.
