The study used a qualitative-exploratory approach, with the theory of social representations as the theoreticalconceptual support. Data collection was performed using two techniques: the free association of words and the semi-directed interview with open questions. The thematic analysis technique was used for data interpretation. The research resulted in two thematic units: cervical cancer: an early treatable wound and the screening test: taking because of fearing. It was observed that women have great fear of having cervical cancer and, therefore, recognize the importance of the screening test and see it as an act of self-care towards their health.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Implementação da estratégia de ensino-aprendizagem à família de paciente crônico(2002-02) FREITAS, Maria Célia de; SANTANA, Mary Elizabeth deThis study aims at implementing the teaching-learning strategy for families of patients in chronic conditions. It considers the importance of evaluating the needs and abilities of family members in order to prepare them to manage that situation appropriately, as well as to be able to provide adequate home care. A diagnostic evaluation of a family member/caretaker was conducted during the hospitalization of a patient with congestive cardiac insufficiency. During the diagnosis "knowledge deficit" was identified. Thus, a teaching plan was elaborated for such caretaker with the purpose of preparing him/her for home care. During implementation, formative evaluations were conducted with the purpose of learning about the efficacy of the strategies employed and the summative in the patient's home. The importance of nurses' resorting to the teaching-learning strategy in order to guide the family member/caretaker in the process of caring for people with chronic conditions was certified. The aim is promoting life, in spite of the disease, since the quality of such care will prevent aggravating recurrence and consequent re-hospitalizations.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Paciente laringectomizado total: validação das características definidoras para o diagnóstico de enfermagem comunicação prejudicada(2002-12) SANTANA, Mary Elizabeth de; SAWADA, Namie OkinoThis study aimed at validating the defining characteristics of the nursing diagnosis "hindered communication" for patients submitted to total laryngectomy. The diagnostic content validation model (DCV) proposed by FEHRING (1986, 1987) was used. Data were collected by means of a Likert-type frequency scale consisting of twenty-six defining characteristics from the list of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) and three fictional defining characteristics. Twenty-six clinical and faculty nurses participated in the study. The results showed a total DCV of 0.84 for larger defining characteristics and a total DCV of 0.69 for smaller defining characteristics. One is about a qualitative-exploratório study with the use of the Theory of the social representations. The collection of data was carried through in the period from January through December of 2007, with the use of two techniques: the interview half-structuralized with open questions and the free comment. For the interpretation of these data the technique of analysis of thematic content was used. The research had as a result, three thematic units, thus called: The Papanicolau examination - a care with the health of the woman; Taboos and beliefs on the Papanicolau examination; and practical One of same care of itself: the Papanicolau examination. This is a qualitative study using the Theory of Social Representations as theoretical reference. For data collection it was employed two techniques: the free association of ideas and observation. For data analysis the thematic analysis was used. The research resulted in two thematic units: the breast and its representations of social change in the body and social representations of women mastectomy: implications for self care. In the study, showed that women objected care of the breasts through the realization of self-examination.
