Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Antibodies to Leishmania spp. in domestic felines(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2015-12) OLIVEIRA, Gabriela Capriogli; PAIZ, Laís Moraes; MENOZZI, Benedito Donizete; LIMA, Michele de Souza; MORAES, Carla Cristina Guimarães de; LANGONI, HelioLeishmaniasis is a vector-borne zoonotic disease caused by protozoa in the genus Leishmania, typical of rural and peri-urban environments. The causative agent of American visceral leishmaniasis is Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi and the main insect vector in Brazil is Lutzomyia longipalpis. Dogs (Canis familiaris) are important in the transmission of the disease, as a reservoir closely related to humans and an infection source for phlebotomine vectors. Since 1990, an increasing number of feline leishmaniasis cases have been reported, suggesting that domestic cats (Felis catus) might be involved in the epidemiology of the disease. The present study analyzed the prevalence of anti-Leishmania spp. antibodies in naturally infected domestic cats from various neighborhoods in the municipality of Belém, Pará, Brazil, using the indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and the direct agglutination test (DAT). Among the 443 samples tested, 18 (4.06%) presented positive reactions in the IFA. The observed titers were 40 IU in 4.97% of the samples and 80 IU in 0.90%. In the DAT test, positive results were found in 25 (5.64%) of the samples. The observed titers were also 40 IU (4.97%) and 80 IU (0.68%). The agreement rate between the two tests was considered low (Kappa coefficient = 0.10).Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Detection of anti-Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) in the state of Pará, Brazil(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2012-09) CORRÊA, Fabíola do Nascimento; TEIXEIRA, Rafaella Câmara; OLIVEIRA, Carlos Magno Chaves; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; FONSECA, Adivaldo Henrique daThis study aimed to investigate the frequency of homologous antibodies of IgG class against Borrelia burgdorferi in buffaloes in the state of Pará, Brazil. Blood serum samples from 491 buffaloes were analyzed by means of the indirect ELISA test, using crude antigen produced from a cultivar of the North American strain G39/40 of B. burgdorferi. There were 412 positive samples (83.91%), and there was no statistically significant difference in the proportions of positive animals between the 81.69% (232/284) originating from Marajó Island and the 86.96% (180/207) from the continental area of the state of Pará. In all the municipalities studied, the frequency of positive findings of antibodies against B. burgdorferi among the animals ranged from 63.6% to 92.9%. The high numbers of seropositive animals can be explained by the frequent presence of the tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, and by the possible existence of spirochetes of the genus Borrelia infecting buffaloes in the region studied, although specific studies are needed to confirm this relationship. These factors suggest that a cross-reaction exists between the North American strain G39/40 of B. burgdorferi, which is used as an antigenic substrate, and the species of Borrelia spp. that possibly infects buffaloes in the state of Pará.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Infestation by Haematopinus quadripertusus on cattle in São Domingos do Capim, state of Pará, Brazil(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2012-09) SCOFIELD, Alessandra; CAMPOS, Karinny Ferreira; SILVA, Aryane Maximina Melo da; OLIVEIRA, Cairo Henrique Sousa de; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; CAVALCANTE, Gustavo GóesSevere infestation with lice was observed on crossbred cattle (Bos taurus indicus × Bos taurus taurus) in the municipality of São Domingos do Capim, state of Pará, Brazil. Sixty-five animals were inspected and the lice were manually collected, preserved in 70% alcohol and taken to the Animal Parasitology Laboratory, School of Veterinary Medicine, Federal University of Pará, Brazil, for identification. The adult lice were identified as Haematopinus quadripertusus, and all the cattle examined were infested by at least one development stage of this ectoparasite. The specimens collected were located only on the tail in 80% (52/65) of the cattle, while they were around the eyes as well as on the ears and tail in 20% (13/65). Nits, nymphs and adults of the parasite were respectively collected from 98.46% (64/65), 38.46% (25/65) and 23.08% (15/65) of the animals examined. This is the first report of bovine pediculosis caused by H. quadripertusus in the state of Pará, Brazil. Further studies should be conducted to determine the occurrence pattern of this species in Brazil and its importance to livestock production.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Morphology and morphometry of three Plasmodium juxtanucleare (Apicomplexa: Plasmodiidae) isolates(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2007-09) OLIVEIRA, Carina Elisei de; FERNANDES, Kátia Roberta; FORLANO, Maria Dalila; MADUREIRA, Renata Cunha; SCOFIELD, Alessandra; YOTOKO, Karla Suemy Clemente; SOARES, Cleber Oliveira; ARAÚJO, Flábio Ribeiro de; MASSARD, Carlos LuizIn this work, three isolates of Plasmodium juxtanucleare have been analyzed based on morphological, morphometric and parasitic parameters. Each isolate was sampled from naturally infected adult chicken (Gallus gallus) from rural areas of three Brazilian municipalities: Seropédica (22º 48' S; 43º 41'W), in the state of Rio de Janeiro; Cruzeiro (22º 33' S; 44º 57'W), in the state of São Paulo; and Santa Bárbara do Tugúrio (21º 15' S; 43º 27' W), in the state of Minas Gerais. The blood samples taken from each infected chicken were inoculated in three groups of ten young chicken (21 days old). Blood smears of the experimentally infected chicken were sampled every two days until the 69th day in order to evaluate the parasitemia. For the morphological-descriptive and morphometric analyses, we measured 30 individuals from each of the intraerythocytic states, measures of the major (MD) and minor diameters (md), the estimation of morphometric index (Mi=md/MD) and size (T=pab, a= md/2; b=MD/2). The results indicated low and homogeneous parasitemia rates in the three strains, which showed differences among shape and size of the parasitic stadia displayed.
