In this study, I analyze the performance of the common partners and the board of directors of the Association of Residents and Family Farmers of Igarapé-Açu de Baixo (Amafib), in the municipality of Irituia, Pará, in proposals related to collective action with its partners, the Central Social Organizations Between the Rivers Guamá and Capim (Consergc) and the multinational company Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) in the context of the integration of family agriculture to the agro-industry of palm. The methodology consisted of a case study with qualitative and quantitative approaches. The following were carried out: direct observation of meetings and work activities of the partners; non-directive and semi structured interviews between August 2019 and February 2020; and review of pertinent literature, prioritizing the categories collective action, associativism and productive integration. The results show that Amafib's actions with its partners have been favorable to the members of the association. In the cooperation with Consergc, several demands have been reached, such as the suitability of weighing the fruits for the digital balance, the sale of fertilizers by the company itself, the increase in the price paid for the palm oil and the marketing of tools through collective purchase. In a scenario of negotiations between the parties for the common good, Consergc has a leading role in the collective action and contributed to the good progress of the projects.

A adoção de práticas agroecológicas por camponeses: estudo de caso no oeste maranhense
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2015-03-24) SÁNCHEZ COUTO, Xoán Carlos; ALVES, Lívia de Freitas Navegantes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1337509239539346
Agroecology has been defined as a science, a social movement and a set of alternative practices. Here we examine the last two dimensions. In order to study the social organization of Brazilian agroecology we used the political process theory, finding evidence that the Brazilian agroecological movement meets the requirements of this theoretical proposal for being considered as a social movement. In a second paper we focus on the problems surrounding technologies’ adoption by peasants in Western Maranhão. From a systems approach of the farm and through the construction of a typology of the production systems found in this region, we analyze the difficulties related to the adoption of agroecology, seen as a technical change from exogenous origin. Thus, we conducted participant observation, participatory rural appraisal and semi-structured interviews in 38 peasant families in three rural communities. We also explored the opportunity of integration between agroecology and the dynamics of transformation of production systems, as an endogenous innovation process. In the third paper we apply the concepts of strategy and tactics to peasants’ decision making about adoption of agroecological practices. Focusing on those who have chosen the farm diversification strategy, we find a variety of diversification strategies and that criteria used for strategic decision making are different from those applied for tactical decisions. In a fourth paper we try to understand the motivations of family farmers in Western Maranhão to make their productive and technological choices, understanding the historical decisive factors for the differentiation of production systems, which caused only some of them had the opportunity to join the agroecological practices. Through retrospective analysis, we identified two transformation vectors, contributing to family farmers deem different answers to the same influences from the environment. External variables, attached to productive family decisions, influence the historical path of the farms. We found that not always the promotion of agroecology is consistent with peasant families’ logic. However, effective technical support and permanent interest groups about this innovation, perform an environment in which peasants feel more confident to adopt agroecological practices.

Agricultura familiar camponesa no planalto santareno: formas de existência em Mojuí dos Campos-PA
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2020-09-09) BORGES, Anderson Coelho; FOLHES, Ricardo Theophilo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5612208724254738
Peasant family agriculture is characterized by those families that, through land ownership and access to available natural resources, seek to solve their productive and reproductive problems through extractive, agricultural and non-agricultural rural production. Taking this concept into account, the objective is to analyze in a multiscale way the characteristics that enable the understanding of the conditions related to the decision of the peasant family to seek or not to trigger pluriativity. To this end, using an interdisciplinary approach, qualitative and quantitative data were used, obtained, respectively, through the participant observation technique in two communities - Mojuí dos Pereiras and Terra de Areia - located in the municipality of Mojuí dos Campos and from the mobilization of the secondary database and the selection of variables (land, labour force and institutional context) collected in field research with the peasant production units. Thus, in the light of peasant investment theory, a pattern was identified among peasant families that engage in non agricultural activities, they have restrictions on land, labour or both, while those families that have land and labour force in conditions sufficient for their reproduction are dedicated only to agricultural labour

Agricultura familiar e desenvolvimento rural sustentável na Amazônia
    (2005-06) HURTIENNE, Thomas Peter
The article presents a critical review of theoretical and methodological concepts upon which analytical works about Amazonian peasantries since the 1960s have been based. The vision of Amazon peasants as shifting cultivators with low productivity who destroy their ecological habitat and are condemned to disappear due to the advance of large landowners (the model of the frontier cycle) is contrasted with the tendency for the consolidation of family agriculture based on more complex production systems, including permanent cultures, small animal husbandry and cattle. This tendency is more clearly evident in the Northeast of Pará, but has also been statistically confirmed for the State of Pará and the Northern Region of Brazil. This means that the hypothesis of the frontier cycle has limited validity for older colonization regions. However, recent research on borders showed production systems which concentrate on cattleraising in the South of Pará and on permanent cultures in the Transamazônica region. These systems cannot simply be classified as shifting cultivation but represent different trajectories from that of the Northeast of Pará.

Agricultura familiar e o desenvolvimento local no Município de Santarém Novo (PA)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-09-23) MONTEIRO, Sandy Lorena Costa; MATHIS, Armin; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8365078023155571; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7831-9391
Considering the complexity and challenges faced by smaller municipalities in the Amazon regarding sustainable development, this research focused on exploring the relationship between sustainable local development and family farming in the municipality of Santarém Novo, located in the Northeast region of Pará, the third smallest state, with 6,116 inhabitants. The purpose of this research was to understand the development concepts of key decision-makers in the municipality, including public officials and representatives of social organizations of local farmers, as well as to assess farmers' perceptions of government actions, especially those impacting the future of family farming. This proposal aimed to comprehend how these diverse perspectives influence actions and policies for local development planning, with an emphasis on family farming. To achieve these objectives, a transdisciplinary approach was adopted, employing a concurrent mixed methods methodology that combines quantitative and qualitative methods for a comprehensive evaluation of these interpretations. The quantitative strategy aimed to identify patterns and general trends in variables related to farmers' assessments, while the qualitative strategy explored the development cosmovisions of public officials and association representatives, based mainly on Ignacy Sachs' Theory of Dimensions of Sustainable Development, also supported by the development concepts of other authors such as David Korten and Amartya Sen. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews with managers and association presidents, and the application of forms to farmers. Quantitative data analysis used descriptive statistical methods, while qualitative data analysis was performed using Bardin's (2016) Content Analysis technique. As a result, the research presented, in addition to the current panorama of municipal development, a diversity of challenges faced by family farmers, including productive dynamics, labor and organizational relations, technical assistance, access to public policies, credit, markets, and social participation. It was also possible to list the main demands and needs of farmers for improving conditions in the sector. Farmers' assessments of the municipal government's actions on these issues were predominantly negative. Furthermore, the research evidenced a plurality of understandings about the aspects that compose development in the interviewees' view. Despite the distinct priorities and strategies addressed by different groups and individuals, the results generally highlighted a greater emphasis on the social dimension of sustainable development, encompassing elements such as health, education, and income, as well as the need to expand opportunities and capacities of individuals and access to non-productive activities such as leisure. These elements were widely recognized as fundamental to ensuring a solid foundation for individual and collective progress and well-being. There is also a shared perception of the importance of economic, territorial, and political aspects (national). The cultural dimension was also alluded to with considerable frequency. However, some areas, despite being considered important, were less emphasized by them, such as the ecological, environmental, and political (international) dimensions. In contrast, there was also an emphasis on considering more subjective aspects of human development, related to ethical, moral, religious, psychological values, and the strengthening of social relations, which refer to solidarity, respect, fraternity, and community sense.

Pineapple is a tropical native plant of the Amazon region. Hence, the southeast region of Pará is highly benefited by horticulture as it features favorable clime and soil conditions for pineapple cultivation, plenty of labour and low production costs. As it is a region with an immense area for settlements, which has still been in its early stages of structuring with low levels of income to the settlers and still precarious development conditions, it is important and urgent for the entire southeastern Pará that alternatives of investments and direction of public policies aimed at structuring the chain production of pineapple are considered and hence promote local development. This piece of work, meeting the immediate needs of the producers and managers, shows the pineapple culture as an important alternative for family farming, benefiting a great deal communities of small farmers in the southeastern Pará. It aims at evaluating the performance of public policies on pineapple production, showing the roles assigned to each public entity involved in this activity and their actual performance. Looking into bibliographic data and information through on site questionnaires, interviews and observations, it has been concluded that it is advantageous to exploit pineapple in the southeast settlement areas of Para, taking advantage of the familiar structure generating both employment and income, since it does not require large areas of cultivation or huge technology investments. The role of public policy flaws on several points listed throughout the work, which has made it difficult and hindered local development. Defying the odds, small producers keep on struggling and increasing the production of each crop, putting the city in the second place in the national production of pineapple.

A Agricultura familiar e seu papel na produção rural paraense: uma análise a partir do censo agropecuário de 2017
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-10-30) CORREA, Alan Tiago; RAVENA CAÑETE, Thales Maximiliano; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6291249974166783
Family farming plays a crucial role in agricultural production in the state of Pará, serving as one of the main sources of employment and income in rural areas while significantly contributing to the local and regional economy. The practices adopted by small-scale producers are essential for the conservation of biodiversity and natural resources. Studying family farming in Pará allows for a deeper understanding of its specificities and challenges, providing valuable insights for the development of more effective and inclusive public policies. This study aims to analyze, based on data provided by the 2017 Agricultural Census, the role of family farming in rural production in Pará, with an emphasis on its contribution to the supply of the domestic market. The research seeks to answer the following question: “What is the role of family farming in rural production in Pará, considering its contribution to the supply of the domestic market, based on the 2017 Agricultural Census?”. Employing a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the study explores the nuances and qualitative aspects of family farming's contribution, including the social, cultural, and economic dynamics that permeate this activity, as well as the challenges faced by small producers. On the other hand, the quantitative analysis provides an objective view of the sector's contribution, using data on agricultural production. The analytical method is based on the description of variables related to family farming and the evolution of agricultural production. For this, data from the 2017 Agricultural Census are used, covering areas such as rural agroindustry, livestock, forestry, temporary and permanent crops, plant extraction, floriculture, and horticulture. The results indicate that family farming also stands out in the supply of higher value-added products, such as fruits, vegetables, and legumes. These crops, which require specialized management and are market-oriented, are fundamental to the supply of local fairs and markets in urban areas, establishing a direct connection between rural and urban spaces. This productive diversification not only strengthens family farming but also ensures an efficient local supply chain, reducing dependency on large producers and external products. By focusing on the domestic market, small-scale farmers guarantee a continuous supply of essential products, particularly in times of crisis or logistical challenges.

Agrobiodiversidade e as relações de trocas entre agricultores familiares que possuem sistemas agroflorestais na região de Itabocal, Irituia (PA)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2021-04-30) SANTOS, Tasseli Figueiredo dos; STEWARD, Angela May; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6123114287861055
This research project deals withthe processes of local knowledge, seedlings and seeds exchange among family farmers and the influences of these processes on the advancement of Agroforestry Systems (SAFs) and local agrobiodiversity. The project aims to analyze the dynamics local knowledge, seedling and seed exchange among farmers who have SAFs in Itabocal (Irituia-PA) region and their influences on local agrobiodiversity. Data collection was based on field research, in which an exploratory study of the area was carried out and visits were made to family farmers; at this time semi-structured interviews and/or a semi-open-ended questionnaires were conducted and accompanied by a guided tour. Afterwards, a sketch of the study area was presented to the farmers for them to indicate exchange relationships. Research results are described in three topics: the first deals with SAFs and the dynamics of seed and/or seedling exchange, describing the process of the advance of SAFs in the region and the role of the D'Irituia cooperative in this process. In relation to the exchange of seedlings and/or seeds, research showed that there is an intense flow of these materials between farmers and also outside the region at the municipal level, occurring during farmers' fairs, when they visit neighbors or family members, and during meetings or gatherings of cooperative farmers. The second topic deals with local knowledge, exchange and its relationship with technical-scientific knowledge, revealing that local knowledge is formed by the accumulation of cultural experiences, specifically with years of work and learning from older subjects combined with technical-scientific knowledge obtained from institutions. Therefore, the exchange of knowledge occurs both between farmers and between technicians or researchers through orality, being important to understand solidarity and reciprocity as bases for improving planting and production. The third topic deals with local agro-biodiversity from the formation of SAFs, revealing a diversity of 81 (eighty-one) species distributed in 45 (forty-five) botanical families, 59.8% for food use and 24.4% for wood use. In this sense, the processes knowledge seedling and seed exchange are fundamental for the advance of the SAFs in the region and have contributed significantly to the maintenance and management of local agrobiodiversity.

Agrobiodivesificacion de playas y barreales y su función en la economia familiar ribereña de la Amazônia Peruana
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2005-07-14) RIOS ARÉVALO, Michelly; MCGRATH, David Gibbs; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4373475491613670
The present agrobiodiversidad at playas and barreales them of the Amazonian Peruvian it was studied in Muyuy, sector once three hours was located of Iquitos City, the Region Loreto capital. The objective of work was guided to measure the agrobiodiversidad in these expeditious environments and its contribution in the family riverside economy. Firstly, we see than the agricultural activity practiced at playas and barreales them it takes place through a role of production with cultivations of short vegetative period (rice, caupí, peanuts, etc.); this to decrease the risk provoked by the repiquetes or flooding new yearly cycle. Data in the crop years of 1999 and 2004, they allow identifying the establishment of 9 and 2 cultivations respectively, this variation is due to flooding different behavior; variation that at the same time the formation of different environments like playas and barreales them: heights, means, and basses. From now on, we see than optimal barreal environment for the production of rice, it was promoted with agricultural credits - 2004; this implicated logically the incursion varieties certified or overdue ( Inti, Ecoarroz, Jar, Capirona, and Amor 107 ), tender to a fast inundabilidad like the happened in the crop year 2004. The results evidence than communities SPC, ODN, TPZ, CON and DDM benefited with the credits and affected by the flooding, managed to rescue to 10 % of the production expected of rice; find farmers' cases of the communities here DDM and MAZ that used precocious varieties not promoted with credits like the Milagrito also they managed rescue of 50 to 60 % of production. The farmers that established caupí at playas managed to make good use of approximately 10 % of the hoped-for production. The flooding that affected the cultivations near to the period of harvest created propitious environments for nutrition and protection of some fishes and tortoises sorts, this at the same time increased factors or resources of use for the farmers; here, the work of fishing was executed so much for overall consumption and the commercialization for part of some cases found in the studied communities, the more representative like the family shows 11 than as from this work of fishing you got the 2,9% of recuperation on the basis of the profitable calculation from the established cultivations; and of tortoises' capture the 3,1%. It is concluded that the cultivations lost by flooding can be recovered in more significant percentages, if adequate handlings without altering the environments of production be used as it happens with the chemical application of agriculture.

The creation of the Extractive Reserves, in the beginning of the decade that started in 1990, arises as an alternative of administration of forest resources in the Units of Conservation (UC). Centered as a principle of the coadministration between the State and the resident traditional populations, these Reserves defense, economic and social viability depends in a large part on the local organization of the agroextractivists. However, in spite of the enormous potential of economical exploration of forest products, as the Amazon nuts (Bertholletia excelsa) and the açai (Euterpe oleraceae Mart.), of the strong agricultural tradition and of the hunting and fishing's many possibilities, multiple difficulties persist inside the Extractive Reserves Cajari River (Amapa). The conception of the Sustainable Development and the little production regarding the traditional populations in areas of such Reserves constituted the decisive factors to the beginning of this research. In this way, the study the about the Agroextractivism: sustainability and strategies in the Extractive Reserves Cajari River, south of Amapa tries to identify the evolution and the strategies of the productive base of the population who live in this UC, in the areas of high and low Cajari, in an attempt of revealing the rationality of the local agroextractivism. Therefore, it is expected to evidence the dimension of the change process resulting from the Reserve policies associated with the social movements, with implications in the environmental, social and economic fields.

The National School Meals Program (PNAE) - the largest and oldest public policy in the area of food and nutrition in Brazil, constituting a strategy for Food and Nutrition Security (SAN) - aims to promote and ensure access to adequate food for students in basic education. The Federal Law 11947/2009, links PNAE to family farming, determining that the minimum percentage of 30% of the financial resources transferred by the Union is for the purchase of food from this productive category. This paper analyzed the process of acquisition and supply of food from family farming to meet the school meals of the Federal Institutions of Higher Education (IFES) of the Metropolitan Region of Belém (RMB) as a tool for local development and for Food and Nutritional Security, including the period of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is presented as a qualitative research of theoretical-empirical nature combining exploratory and descriptive elements, having in its procedures the bibliographic and documentary research and on-site interviews with the actors involved in the procurement process in the IFES of the RMB and with family farmers participating and not participating in the PNAE. It was found that the organization of PNAE in the IFES of the RMB meets the Law No. 11947/2009, regarding the purchase of foodstuffs from family farming, and that it has shown important advances, although limiting factors are still present, such as production planning and its inherent issues (insufficient quantity produced, little variety of products offered), compliance with the agenda of requests and sanitary legislation, low participation in public calls, difficulties in understanding the legislation and procedural barriers within the institutions. It was verified that in the pandemic period normative rules were created for the execution of PNAE and the IFES of RMB developed strategies such as the maintenance of income support, support for food distribution and also a campaign to collect food baskets, opting for not distributing family farming products. It can be inferred that the PNAE has the capacity for greater use, both by the Public Administration and by family farmers, so it requires good coordination between those who buy and those who sell, considering all those involved in the process, since the program has its own complexity, being necessary to improve the program to the specificities of the IFES in order to improve the process of purchases from family farming, contributing to local development and to Food and Nutrition Security.

In 2005 a case study was undertaken in agroforestry systems as practiced by family farmers in the Arapuã-Simeira colonization project, municipality of Garrafão do Norte, Pará state, in northern Brazil, with the purpose of describing and systematizing the agrosocial characteristics of the family farmers and their experiences and perceptions of agroforestry systems. The methodology consisted of field research, application of standard questionnaires, observation and discussion in group. Farmers gave preference to some perennial cultures and forest species for intercropping, and the main explication for the introduction of species in their fields was economic gain and social behavior. Multifaceted thinking is seen in the choice of agriculture products and management options, resulting in each property having a combination of different agricultural systems that are adapted to local conditions. The farmer knows better than anyone else how to determine the ideal combination for his agricultural system. The study shows the agrosocial and socialcultural trajectory of the farmers and hypothesis are advanced on what would imply the adoption of agroforestry systems in family agriculture. A systemic approach can be very useful in understanding the relationships and social processes that are important aspects of the rural and agrarian question.

Análise da sustentabilidade na produção familiar no Sudeste Paraense: o caso dos produtores de leite do Município de Rio Maria
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2003-06-18) FEITOSA, Terezinha Cavalcante; HOMMA, Alfredo Kingo Oyama; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1026511676619526
This study analyzes the sustainability of milk production in smallholder areas subjected to the process of fast degradation of pastures established in upland areas (terra firme) in the border of the Brazilian Amazonia. The research was carried out in the Municipality of Rio Maria, Southeast of the State of Pará, one of the Municipalities internationally recognised for its high degree of land conflicts. Fifty-five smallholders in the Settlement Projects of Itaipavas 126, Barra Mansa, Mata Azul, Fazenda São Roque and Vale da Serra, who are sustained by cattle milk production, were interviewed during the months of July and August of 2002. The choice of the properties was intentional, and it was composed by the identification of the income from the cattle raising activities (sale of milk and heifers), as well as an analysis of the techniques used by the smallholders for pasture and livestock management, aiming the sustainability of the productive unit. That analysis allowed to identify, through the socioeconomic indicators, that, although cattle ranching is considered a low risk activity, economically viable for the Amazon region, among the smallholders it becomes an unsustainable activity, because the process of pasture degradation starts within three to five years of pasture establishment, without, however, allowing the production units to save economic resources for pastures reclamation. The sustainable income of livestock milk production activity, being very low relative to the income obtained soon after the initial phase of the activity, does not stimulate the adoption of more sustainable practices. The declining tendency of pasture productivity, with small short term increases, caused by pasture burning and weed control, has been compensated by the incorporation of new areas of pasture. The exhaustion of forest stocks leads to the collapse of the activity in spite of the existing market for meat and milk, when degraded pastures are not reclaimed. Considering an annual rate of pasture depreciation of 10% and an annual interest rate of 15%, farmers would have to invest at least 40% of their net profit to guarantee the pasture sustainability at a ten-year period. It was observed that the livestock milk production activities conducted by smallholders is causing a continuous drainage of the natural resources, without the due compensation in the sale price of those products (milk and beef). It is expected that these results can contribute to define public policies, with concrete measures for the smallholders involved in milk production in the sense of guaranteeing the reclamation of degraded pastures, because these smallholders are responsible for a great part of the ecological disbalance of the ecosystem in the Southeast of Pará State. Among the resource-poor cattle farmers there is no financing need for continuous acquisition of cattle, because all the farmers already possess livestock above the holding capacity of their pastures. In that case, it would be necessary instructing the farmers aiming the proper management of the herd and pasture and the creation of financing programs, aiming the recovery of degraded pasture areas. Among the farmers studied does not exist a conservation view, but rather, an anxiety to increase the herd size and pasture areas.

This work discusses the importance of invisible production in the composition of total income of small farmers at the agricultural frontier in the Amazon, marked strongly by agrarian conflicts, as is the case of southeast Pará State. The data used in this study were obtained from field research undertaken with 78 small farmers of the Praialta and Piranheira Agroextractivist Settlement Project, Nova Ipixuna municipality, Pará, in 2001. The general objective of this work was to know in what form the invisible production contributes to composition of family income and to the reproduction strategy of small farm agriculture in the southeast of Pará State. The choice of farmers interviewed was intentional, so that it enabled the identification of agricultural income, as well as in the characterization of the production systems developed by these small farmers. This procedure allowed the elaboration of a typology of the production systems starting from some social, economic and agronomic indicators. The results of this research proved a strong participation of invisible production in the group of the activities of the family agriculture. Products with defined markets, have a part of the production retained for family consumption, non-markets products are directed exclusively to own consumption and, an important component, refers to the sale of family labour, essential in their survival strategy. An immediate conclusion is that the agricultural and extractive production is very superior to that being estimated or unknown in the official statistics. Knowledge of the participation of invisible production becomes important for the policymakers, first due to the under estimation of official statistical data, as much for the amount as for the non-inclusion of various products, produced or collected, in family agriculture, on or off the property. This way, it can be verified that the small farmers of the Praialta and Piranheira Agroextractivist Settlement Project possess an equivalent total income to 1,48 minimum wage/ month. It is interesting to highlight that the contribution of invisible production to family income reaches 0,28 minimum wage/month that represents 18,77%, of the total estimated income. The drainage of the autonomous non-agricultural income, from government welfare pensions, represents 10,55% of the farmers' monetary income, constituting an important factor of the local communities' sustainability. It is expected that these results are important to define public policies to increase the sustainability of frontier family agriculture estimated as more than 600 thousand family units in the Amazon, responsible for the largest portion of the chronic deforestation and burning.
