This article presents the handicraft industry in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, treating it as a productive arrangement. Primary data obtained from field work carried out in 2005 by the authors, was combined with secondary data from research carried out by SEBRAE in 2002. The most significant empirical aspects regarding the functioning of this arrangement are constituted by five main elements: the company and entrepreneurs, dynamics of innovation, learning, knowledge and cooperation and, finally, the most significant aspects of its management. The questionnaire developed by Redesist (IE-UFRJ) regarded the activities connected with handicrafts and was given to directly to the “producers”, in accordance with a representative sample. Among the results obtained, the most significant were the relations of family work, a lack of professionalism, a low degree of cooperation, despite innovations with respect to new products.

The folk art between reality and fantasy: the imaginary in the woodcut and string literature by J. Borges investigates Folk Art by studying the artwork of J. Borges and several views about this theme since the first half of the twentieth century. This research emphasizes the understanding and positioning of artists and scholars about the role of the art of brazilian people in the creation of a national and cultural identity, as well as the space of folk art in the art system, particularly the contributions of Mário de Andrade and Lina Bo Bardi and considerations of Gilbert Durand and Michel Maffesoli about this universe. Throughout this narrative is set a possible panorama of folk art and its evolution (or evolution of its study and debate) to locate the subject during the ancient history until the present times. Among this, this research presents the artist from Pernambuco J. Borges, recognized for his string literature and woodcut works. This research demonstrates how the artist is influenced by several issues and the way he transposes it to his work, transforming his artworks in a registration of everyday life, social and fantastic experiences. Bibliographic research with interviews, field and life observations build this job and form a basis - among many possibilities - where Brazilian folk art can be discussed.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-06-30) MAIA, Maria Felicia Assmar Fernandes Correia; MANESCHY, Orlando Franco; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6198572031091761
The present research makes the relationship between urban handcraft an authorial fashion production in the city of Belém, in the state of Pará, Brazil, after the researcher has discovered that the wish to create fashion products with local identity has led the people of the region to search new local resources to make clothes and accessories with characteristics that could make them different in today’s globalized world, and that the difference is linked with the local culture. The research starts with the investigation of the interfaces of fashion, art and handcraft, showing that this last one can be considered one of the kinds of representation of the local identities. It also shows how the local fashion designers are trying to find their cultural roots in order to face the process of hybridization caused by the acceleration of history. Authors like Nestor Garcia Canclini, Zygmunt Bauman, Pierre Bourdieu e Gilles Lipovestsky give the theoretical support for the researcher’s perception that the access to a wide variety of goods, facilitated by globalization can make it easier to combine them and help designers create new things. Methodologically, the research has been developed by the analysis of the work of four fashion designers who have dared to add the value of handcraft with some local resources like tururi fiber, curauá fiber, fish leather and a new kind of rubber called encauchado to make clothes and accessories that can have original looks. Other authors like Stuart Hall, Lars Svendsen, Carol Garcia and Ana Paula de Miranda also contribute to the researcher’s conclusion that to create fashion production is to create behavior and in today’s market context, handcraft can be the great value that could be aggregated to fashion.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2017-05) SANTOS, Ana Mabell Seixas Alves
This work aims to understand the use of bird feathers as fundamental raw material for the confection of the maruja hat in Bragança-PA, emphasizing the relationship between the artisans who produce the hats and the animals chosen para for this purpose. The preference for a species of duck, which resulted in the gradual disuse of other birds – such as guarás, herons and hens –, follows practical and aesthetic criteria that has affected the productive chain of the hat over the years. The obtaining and sacrifice of birds, as well as the choice and withdrawal of the feathers and the subsequent treatment necessary to their durability are marked by a relationship that reveals nuances of animating and different ways of dealing with religiosity. The duality between the human and non-human elements results in the materialization of the craft knowledge and in the experience of an occupation sometimes described as devotional. The work was developed based on fieldwork, with interviews to five artisans, and in the bibliographical research about material culture, from which is possible to highlight Miller (2010) and Hall (2003).

De caco a espetáculo: a produção cerâmica de Cachoeira do Arari (ilha do Marajó, PA)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2007-09-25) LINHARES, Anna Maria Alves; BELTRÃO, Jane Felipe; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6647582671406048
Artisans from Cachoeira do Arari, located in Marajó fields, in the State of Pará, they reproduce copied ceramic pieces of archeological objects found in stiff of the place. Nowadays, the objects are exposed in the Museum of Marajó, located in Cachoeira. The museum was created by Giovanni Gallo, Italian priest that arrived in the area in the 70's. The objective of this work is to analyze the several appropriation forms and reverse-significance of that archeological patrimony, the artistic and/or expository, the scientific and marketing, in other words, their several metamorphoses. It is worth to stress that the spectaclelization of that patrimony felt starting from the moment that of mere bits of Indians that lived in the area, called marajoaras, and that they cared the residents when found them in their houses yards, according to narratives orals, they turned tourist spectacles, commercial and cultural identification.

Paradoxos da conservação da biodiversidade e da salvaguarda do patrimônio imaterial no Estado do Pará
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-07-12) CUNHA, Ana Paula Araújo Gomes; CARVALHO, Luciana Gonçalves de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9870905738650852; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7916-9092
This research focuses on issues relating to policies relating to the cultural and natural heritage of the State of Pará. Even though the inseparability of nature and culture is recognized in chapters of the Federal Constitution of 1988 and the Constitution of the State of Pará of 1989, the cultural and environmental dimensions are addressed separately in the process of patrimonialization of balata crafts in the face of restrictions on access to this raw material. The general objective of this research was to discuss whether, and how, the practices of the State of Pará in relation to intangible cultural heritage and the environment contribute to its safeguarding and conservation, respectively. This is qualitative and explanatory research to specify characteristics that determine or favor the occurrence of the social phenomena focused on. The methodology involved bibliographical research and field research, which included semi- structured interviews and participant observation. Thus, it was found that the State of Pará, although it has recognized the balata craftsmanship as intangible heritage through the legislative power, threatens the material support of the craftsmanship through the executive power insofar as it allocates the trees that provide the material- cousin who makes handicrafts for companies to manage in the Paru State Forest. The bodies responsible for managing cultural heritage and the environment, as well as the legislative and executive powers, are disjointed. It is necessary to accelerate disconnections in the operations carried out by agencies and seek more integrated practices.

The aim of this research was to investigate the know-how in the production of rabecas in Bragança-PA and the mathematical relations proceeded by this context. The empirical research was constituted by systematical observations of the process of artisanal production of rabecas, considering the artisans’ practice. From the ethnomathematical viewpoint, the research occurred through filming, interviews and photo records of their relationship with the local culture, highlighting the Marujada Festival which happens every year in Bragança, whereabouts the rabecas are part of this tradition. This research search for the comprehension of the traditional know-how in the production of rabecas and the mathematical knowledge that are established as an organized knowledge, with a logic that is parallel to science, however completing it at the same time. The methodological concepts were based on the principles of qualitative research made in-loco, when the process of production of rabecas was accompanied in all the stages. The ethnomathematics was the theoretical support used to comprehend the field observation. The results showed us that the artisans have a unique logic for measuring and establishing mathematical comparisons using parts of the body and the senses such as hearing, seeing and feeling. The knowledge of masters in producing rabecas is only a different way to think about the empirical knowledge as part of science ans the mathematical know-how, commonly taught by formal education.

The "marajoara" ceramic produced in the district of Icoaraci (Belém), inspired in ceramics founded in Marajó Island, is one of the symbols that define the identity of the people in Pará today. Through government incentives, this artcraft production won public recognition, contributing to a national project survival started in the Imperial period, which recommended the creation of a Brazilian identity supported in the Indigenous’s image as an outstanding referent. Reflecting about the construction of identities from a material object of a popular culture, involves asking questions and reflections about concepts such as tradition, culture, identity, multiculturalism, cultural circularity, heterogeneity or hybridization. These concepts whose theoretical informations are found in the Canclini, Ginzburg, Milton Santos, Ulpiano Meneses and Marcos Areválo’s works contribute to the development of a new understanding about the identity of the people in Pará from their material culture: the traditional ceramic from Icoaraci.
