Acute toxicity of sodium metabisulphite on mangrove crab Ucides cordatus (Decapoda, Ucididae)
(2012-12) PEDALE, Adriana Batista; FUJIMOTO, Rodrigo Yudi; SANTOS, Rudã Fernandes Brandão; ABRUNHOSA, Fernando Araujo
The sodium metabisulphite salt is usually used in shrimp culture to prevent black spot. Unfortunately the toxicological effect of this xenobiotic in decapod crabs is unknown. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the sodium metabisulphite LC50 - 96 h in the mangrove species Ucides cordatus. Crabs were collected in the tidal creek margins in Bragança estuarine and were submitted to preliminary test (screening) and posterior definitive test. Crabs were exposed in five different concentrations and a control group in five replicates, two crabs per recipient (5 L) during 96 hours. A negative correlation was observed to sodium metabisulphite concentration in relation to dissolved oxygen and pH. At the end of the experiment were obtained the following mortality index in relation to sodium metabisulphite concentrations: 100% in 86.0 mg.L-1, 74% in 62.0 mg.L-1, 52% in 52.0 mg.L-1, 44% in 38.0 mg.L-1. The value of LC50 - 96 h for U. cordatus was determinate at 42.58 mg.L-1/Na2S2O5. The results strongly indicate that sodium metabisulphite is toxic for U. cordatus, and this crab could be used for biomonitoring the environmental impact.

Among the products of animal origin, the crab is held as one of the victuals more susceptible to the deterioration process due to is specific chemical composition, activities of autoliticas enzyme and to the close pH of the neutrality. Beyond of those intrinsic factors related to the crustacean, the process of extraction of its meats is accomplished, in the great majority of the times, in unsatisfactory hygienic-sanitary condition, causing, like this, a high text of contamination of these. With the objective of analyzing the microbiologic, microscopic and parasitical quality of the crabmeat traded in two municipal districts of Pani (Sao Caetano de Odivelas and Braganya), 30 samples were researched, acquired from the meat collectors, in its points of collection. In the microbiologic analysis, presence was observed, in high levels, of fecal coliforms and S. aureus, in both municipal districts, however Salmonella (s. panama: sorogrupo D) was only detected in Braganya/Vila de Caratateua. It is stood out that, great part of collection points presented their samples out of the effective legal patterns in the current Brazilian legislation. The microscopic analysis revealed constant dirt presence (fragments and stick chips, seed, fibber and chips of vegetable origin, for the human, excrement and insect larva). However, the parasitical analysis was negative for the detection of cysts of protozoarius (E. histolytica/E. dispar and G. lamblia). The results reveal the precariousness of the hygienic-sanitary conditions of the researched samples, indicating this way the need of being created, on the part of the competent authorities, a registration of the Ministerio da Agricultura e Secretaria da Agricultura do Estado, so that the manufacturing and the commercialization of this product are made in agreement with Brazilian and state sanitary rules.

This paper initially provides information about the extraction potential of productive mangroves in the municipalities of Quatipuru and Bragança, as well as the socioeconomic characterization of the extractive professionals (crabbers) of this resource. Parallel to the information generated in the mangroves and communities interviewed in Quatipuru and Bragança, this study also seeks to contextualize the extractive activity of the mangrove crab-uçá around the Pará coast, through information obtained by the collection and analysis of data in different mangrove municipalities of Pará’s coast, characterizing the productive activity of this important resource extraction communities. The information collection occurred in the period between 2010-2012, where the extractive potential was examined, in the mangroves of Bragança and Quatipuru confirming these locations as potentially producing regions, with a density of 5.01 ± 1.09 ind/m2 in the Quatipuru magrove and 6.5 ± 1.0 ind/m2 in the Bragança mangrove with an immediate extraction potential (IEP) of 80.91 % in Quatipuru and 86.23 % in Bragança. Concerning extractive activity in the major communities in the municipalities of Quatipuru and Bragança, the profile of crabbers was characterized by male dominated, low education, with at least 16 years of activity for most in Quatipuru and more than 20 years for most of the interviewed in the communities of Bragança. The primary capture technique used is the "braceamento" with the aid of hook in both locations, where they capture on average 51-100 units / day in Quatipuru and 101-150 in Braganca, where the middleman is the main destination of the product for the sites investigated. The data obtained from the Pará coastal reveal that out of all the mangroves studied, the municipality of Viseu was highlighted as an important forest region of Pará, with a density of 4.23 ± 1.40 ind/m2, CPUE 46.6 (crabs / man / hour) and 226.8 ± 113.1 units captured by crabber/day, however , it is important to notice that this municipality had the lowest average price per crab (R$0.18 ± 0,05) among all communities of the municipalities visited. The importance of this resource for the communities in the coastal Pará is clear and requires regulatory actions that support exploration with sustainability, as well as encouraging these professionals of artisanal fisheries through actions of to recover their citizenship.

This study was conducted at the quilombola communities of Cacau and Terra Amarela, municipality of Colares, Pará State, Brazil. The objective was to describe and analyze the exploitation of the land crab, or mangrove crab (Ucides cordadus), in terms of some socioeconomic aspects, their techniques, strategies and areas of production adopted, and their forms of crab trade. And to compare these aspects with those from other traditional populations also dedicated to the same extractive activity. Semi-open questionnaires, direct observation in the field and trade and flowchart, were techniques applied in this research during 2013. In the communities studied, the extractive economy is predominant, and mangrove crab extraction is among the main activities. At Cacau and Terra Amarela, households have in average 4.3 and 4.9 members, respectively. Most of the families live in their own brickwork houses, built with conventional materials. Despite of this, these extractive households are poor and live in difficult conditions, with almost no access to public services. In general, the inhabitants stop attending school early in their lives, and most of them (72 to 82%) failed to complete the elementary school cycle. A low monthly household income was recorded; the majority of the households earn less than one minimum salary per month. The laço and the braceamento are the main techniques for obtaining the resource. The technique of braceamento is performed during the four days of work per week in average during the rainy months. The application of laço is performed in average during twelve days per month during the drought months. Cacau produces in average 52 (SD ± 15) crabs / work day / person and 110 (SD ± 56) crabs / work day / person in in the rainy and drought periods, respectively. In the Terra Amarela community these averages are 56 (SD ± 24) crabs / day / person and 150 (SD ± 72) crabs / day/ person. The inhabitants of these communities trade with intermediaries from the region. The crabs are sold in natura, whole and alive, transported in cofos in Cacau and bags in Terra Amarela. Are traded at prices that fluctuate throughout the year, from R$ 40.00 to R$ 80.00 each group of 100 individuals. The low pay for they work, together with low education level, deficiencies in infrastructure, low technology for production, and lack of local provision of public services are some of the aspects contributing to the low quality of life of these families in the communities. These factors also contribute for the maintenance of the engagement of local inhabitants in low value activities, such as the extraction of mangrove crabs. The conditions described for Cacau and Terra Amarela are quite similar to those observed in other traditional communities living and working in similar conditions in the coastal region of Pará State, Brazil. The extraction and trade are very similar to most of the traditional communities that exploit this resource in mangroves forests along the coast of Pará. No significant differences or peculiarities were observed in the extractive activity of these quilombola communities, in relation to other traditional populations performing this same activity in the area. However, differences were found between the two communities studied, which represent variations of this general pattern identified. Probably these differences are related to the technologies adopted, and also on the amount of crabs captured in the two locations. These impact the costs of the activity, its profitability, and the quality of life of inhabitants of Cacau and Terra Amarela.

Comparative morphology of the first zoea of twelve brachyuran species (Crustacea: Decapoda) from the Amazon region
(2013-06) SOUZA, Adelson Silva de; COSTA, Rauquírio André Albuquerque Marinho da; ABRUNHOSA, Fernando Araujo
The laboratory-hatched first zoeal stage of twelve brachyuran species collected in the estuarine area of the Caeté River in the Amazonian region are described and illustrated in the present study: P. americanus Saussure, 1857, Eurytium limosum (Say, 1818), Sesarma curacaoense De Man, 1892, S. rectum Randall, 1840, Armases rubripes (Rathbun, 1897), Aratus pisonii (H. Milne Edwards, 1837), Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius, 1787), Uca rapax (Smith, 1870), U. maracoani (Latreille, 1802), U. thayeri Rathbun, 1900, Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) and Pachygrapsus gracilis (Saussure, 1858). Through intraspecific comparisons of the respective larval stage, an identification key was generated and provided. Most of the studied species presented morphological differences (e.g. type and presence or absence of setae) when compared to the same species previously described in the literature.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016-11-22) BELÚCIO, Lucinice Ferreira; GOUVEIA JUNIOR, Amauri; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1417327467050274
This study aimed to elaborate the behavioral budget and to obtain the level of annual activity on the surface as well as the shape of the galleries of Uca maracoani and Minuca rapax, which coexist in the intertidal region of the Curuperé mangrove, Curuçá, Pará, During four sequential lunar periods, from October to December of 2013, the behavior of the species was shot to obtain the budget. The annual activity of the species was evaluated by shooting the number of active animals and galleries at four sites along the river. To evaluate the shape and distribution of the galleries paraffin casts were obtained in two stations with mud sediment and sand-muddy. In the ethogram of the species, ninety-five behaviors were recorded, grouped into the categories: Feeding, Reproductive, Walking and Running, Acoustics and Sysmics, Territorial, Agonistic, Maintenance and Grooming. The following categories were important to differentiate the energy budget of the species: Feeding, Territorial, Acoustics, Reproductive. Considering the difference of niches of males and females of the same species, the following behaviors are noteworthy: Feeding, Walking and Running, Territorial, Maintenance, Acoustics and Sysmics, Reproductive, Grooming. A great amount of rainfall (February) and low humidity (October) decreased animals activity at the surface, while the climate in June allowed a higher activity of these animals at the surface. Despite some similarities in the architecture of the galleries of the two species, the differences in volume and depth suggest that they present individual scales that are very different from influences in the bioturbation process. However, this process can be counterbalanced by the population density of each species and its activity rate.

Larvae of the mud crab P. lacustris were reared in laboratory from ovigerous females collected in the estuarine area of the Caeté River in the Amazonian region. The complete development of this species consisted of 4 zoeal and 1 megalopal stages, where each stage was described and illustrated in detail. The results were compared with those of other previous studies on larval development of the species belonging to the genus Panopeus and then briefly discussed. Besides the description of the complete development larval of P. lacustris, has been described and illustrated the first stage zoea of thirteen species of brachyuran crabs collected in the same estuary: P. lacustris Desbonne, 1867, P. americanus Saussure, 1857, Eurytium limosum (Say, 1818), Sesarma curacaoense De Man, 1892, Sesarma rectum Randall, 1840, Armases rubripes (Rathbun, 1897), Aratus pisonii (H. Milne Edwards, 1837), Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius, 1787), Uca rapax (Smith, 1870), Uca maracoani (Latreille, 1802), Uca thayeri Rathbun, 1900, Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) e Pachygrapsus gracilis (Saussure, 1858). Only the zoea I of P. lacustris was not described again. The morphological characteristics of these species are compared with the original descriptions. To make easy the study of plankton-collected material, it was developed a key to identification of the species described in this study.

Development and functional morphology of the foreguts of larvae and postlarvae of three crustacean decapods
(2008-02) ABRUNHOSA, Fernando Araujo; MELO, Marlon Aguiar
The development of the foregut structure and the digestive function of the decapods Litopenaeus vannamei, Sesarma rectum and Callichirus major larvae and post larvae were examined. The protozoeal foregut of L. vannamei is simple, lacking a cardiopyloric valve and bearing a rudimentary filter press. In mysis, the filter press is more developed. In the juvenile stage, grooves and a small lateral tooth arise. In S. rectum, the foregut has a functional cardiopyloric valve and a filter press. The megalopal and juvenile stages of this species have a gastric mill similar to those in adult crabs. In C. major, the foregut of the zoeae is specialized, with the appearance of some rigid structures, but no gastric mill was found. Calcified structures are observed in the megalopae and they become more developed in the juvenile stage. The results support suppositions, previously reported in other studies, that feeding behavior of each larval and postlarval stage is directly related to the morphological characteristics of the foreguts.

Development and functional morphology of the larval foregut of two brachyuran species from Northern Brazil
(2011-12) ABRUNHOSA, Fernando Araujo; SIMITH, Darlan de Jesus de Brito; MONTEIRO, Joely Raquel Costa; SOUZA JUNIOR, Antonio Nivaldo de; OLIVA, Pedro Andrés Chira
Feeding is an important factor for the successful rearing of larvae of the crab species. Further information on the morphological features of the foregut may to reveal larval feeding behaviour and or/whether there is a lecithotrophy in some or even in all stages of the larval cycle. In the present study, the structural development of the foregut and their digestive functions were examined in larvae of two brachyurans, Uca vocator and Panopeus occidentalis, reared in the laboratory. During larval development, the foreguts of the larvae in the first and last zoeal stages and in the megalopa stage were microscopically examined, described and illustrated. The zoeal foreguts of both species were well developed, showing specialization with a functional cardiopyloric valve and a filter press. The megalopa stage had a complex and specialized gastric mill similar to that found in adult crabs with the appearance of rigidly calcified structures. These results support the hypothesis that the feeding behaviour of each larval stage is directly related to the morphological structure of the foregut. Such facts strongly indicate that all larval stages of both . vocator and P occidentalis need an external food source before completing the larval development in a planktonic environment.

The work here presented discusses the crab extractors organization at Vila do Acarajó in weekends, the place is located in Bragança/PA, in Northeast of the State. The source is from the cold grubs. The crab extractors are organized in groups by a local merchant, that in partnership with the merchants from the town, facilitate the crab extractors’ journey in trucks, as a way to extract as many crustaceans as possible, indicating an intensive capture with negatives consequences from the biological point of view of the specie and social of the human groups that live around there and are dependents of the ecosystem. This research was guided by the hypothesis that the lack of material conditions to develop the fishing and agriculture, due to the scarceness of land, forcefully led the extractors to the mangroves, to allocate their work force. The investigation results show a rapid change in the context of capture and sale of the crabs, which are considered an easy and fast product to sell. Was verified that the mangrove rush is done by the Vila’s residents, even those who have terrains that indiscriminately extract crabs that didn’t reach the adult stage. These small crabs are sold without a rule about their size and the quantity by the traders. The whole is sold.

Extractive reserves (RESEX) have emerged as important strategic alternative livelihoods. Integrated into the theoretical framework of sustainable development they have been presented in an empirical way as ample opportunities for co-existence between man and natural resources in sustainable relationships in order to harmonize the social, economic and ecological impacts of local populations. The aim of this study was to examine the role of education within the proposed development behind the proposal of extractive reserves, in particular the case of RESEX / Soure, verifying the viability of extractive reserves as a development model. The locus of the research was the Marine Extractive Reserve of Soure, Soure municipality, state of Pará was studied a population consisting of 278 families of "drawers of crab" / ACS Soure and 1475 fishermen associated with the Colony Fishing Soure 1/CP-Z- Zone 1. The research technique used was direct observation. And the research instruments used were the daily observation and semi-structured interviews. It was found that local natural resources are very rich, although most are threatened. It was also found that the most significant gathering activities in the areas of RESEX along with fishing is the tiração crab, since they are the guarantee of a more immediate financial income. It was observed that not only level of education of the interviewed population constitutes an obstacle to their development as well as their socio-cultural strategies are not being valued within the local government action, not in the plans of implementing the policy of creating this book CNPT / IBAMA. It was concluded that the absence of a socio-pedagogical process that correlates the social and cultural interests of the extractives is also a political aspect of creating the RESEX Soure but is yet to be conceived and organized with local residents and their organizations in Soure. It is actually talking about it. Anyway to put into question the true interests that move the action of the state and the people residing there.

Redescription of megalopa and juvenile development of Pachygrapsus gracilis (Decapoda: Grapsidae) from the Amazon region, reared in the laboratory
(2011-08) ARRUDA, Danielle Cristina Bulhões; ABRUNHOSA, Fernando Araujo
This present study re-describes the megalopa stage and provides detailed morphological descriptions and main growth changes observed in stages I through VII of the juvenile instars of the dark shore crab Pachygrapsus gracilis (Saussure, 1858), from the Amazon region. The specimens in this study were reared in the laboratory and the megalopae were collected at Ajuruteua beach in northeastern Pará, Brazil. Previous studies had described the megalopa of P. gracilis from Mexican waters, as well as those of Pachygrapsus transversus (Gibbes, 1850) and Pachygrapsus marmoratus (Fabricius, 1787). A comparison between the Mexican and Amazonian populations of P. gracilis revealed significant morphological differences. The main difference is the presence of 3 elongated setae on the 5th pereiopods of individuals of the Amazonian population. The setal number and their arrangement in the appendages also differed. In P. gracilis, the male and female genital openings are observed from the juvenile instar III, whereas differentiation in male pleopods is observed only in juvenile instar V. In females, the pleopods undergo rapid differentiation during juvenile instar VI. These morphological comparisons and other observations on development are briefly compared and discussed with reports for other species.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-04) OLIVEIRA, Marcelo do Vale; MANESCHY, Maria Cristina Alves
Within mangroves along the Northern Brazilian coast, the extraction of crabs is a major activity, both economically and culturally. Mangroves are public domain areas, but the surrounding communities develop forms of appropriation that control access, in response to the growing markets for crabs in the region and beyond. The article analyses these institutions of property and the resulting conflicts, focusing the village Pontinha de Bacuriteua, in the municipality of Bragança, State of Pará. It is based upon qualitative research with ten skilled professionals. After observations and interviews conducted between 2011 and 2012, the study found the existence of temporary territories of work, at the same time the communities share concepts about free access to mangroves. We suggest more research and public debate with the active participation of the workers on the relationship between local territorialities and the sustainable harvesting of crabs. This is an important issue considering that the area is located within a protected area, the Reserva Extrativista Marinha Caeté-Taperaçu.

The complete larval development of Armases benedicti (Rathbun) (Decapoda, Sesarmidae), from the Amazon region, reared in the laboratory
(2006-06) LIMA, Jô de Farias; ABRUNHOSA, Fernando Araujo
The four zoeal and one megalopal stages of the wharf crab Armases benedicti (Rathbun, 1897) larvae reared in the laboratory are described and illustrated in detail. The mean duration for each larval stage was 3, 2, 4, 4 and 13 days, respectively. The duration of the larval period from hatching to the first juvenile was 26 days. Morphologically, A. benedicti is very similar to the reported species of genus. However, a small lateral spine is clearly observed in the carapace of zoeal stages of this species. This feature appears to be unique among the family Sesarmidae. Another distinctive character for this species is the zoeal setation of the maxilla endopod (2+2) in which most of the sesarmids have setation (2+3) except for Sesarma tetragonum (Fabricius, 1798). Other comparisons with previous larval studies of the genus Armases Abele, 1992 are briefly discussed.
