A Comparison between RS+TCM and LDPC FEC schemes for the G.fast standard
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016-02-01) TAKEDA, Marcos Yuichi; KLAUTAU JÚNIOR, Aldebaro Barreto da Rocha; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1596629769697284
The need for increasing internet connection speeds motivated the creation of a new standard, G.fast, for digital subscriber lines (DSL), in order to provide fiber-like performance using short twisted pair copper wires. This dissertation focuses in the two former candidate codes for the forward error correction (FEC) scheme, namely Reed-Solomon (RS) with trellis-coded modulation (TCM), from previous DSL standards, and low density parity check (LDPC) codes, from the G.hn standard for home networking. The main objective is to compare both schemes, in order to evaluate which of them performs better, considering metrics such as error correction performance and computational cost. Even though the selected code for G.fast was RS with TCM, it is believed that this choice was biased, as a more recent iterative code like LDPC is known to have a better error correction performance.

Metodologia para a medição de parâmetros relacionados com a qualificação do enlace digital do assinante
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2007-05-25) BRITO JÚNIOR, Edson; CASTRO, Agostinho Luiz da Silva
The present work is related to SELT tests by proposing a methodology for measuring the main parameters related to the loop qualification. For the proposed methodology, some important procedures should be followed in order to provide trust measures such as: appropriate selection of the equipments/devices for the measurements, appropriate choice of the calibration process for the measurements and a statistical treatment of the measurements of the parameters which are Input Impedance, Transfer Function and Scattering Parameter. The present work defines such procedures. For validation of the methodology, some studies of cases were accomplished considering two situations: all of the procedures of measuring were made according to a proposed methodology and, the second case; the measurements made did not follow the proposed procedures. Additionally, in order to prove the applicability of the methodology a comparison evaluation was carried out between the measured data and some theoretical models used as references. In both cases (application of the proposed methodology and in the comparison evaluation) the results showed the applicability of methodology. The data were reliable and coherent with the expected values and theory.

Otimização de sistemas DSL utilizando técnicas de gerenciamento de espectro
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2010-05-10) MONTEIRO, Márcio Murilo Conte; KLAUTAU JÚNIOR, Aldebaro Barreto da Rocha; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1596629769697284
This dissertation presents contributions to some strategies of spectrum management which have received few attention in the literature: power minimization and noise margin maximization. Regarding power minimization, about 60% of the total power drained by the DSL transceivers are used in the transmission. The contribution of this dissertation with respect to this field was to prove mathematically that the algorithms of rate maximization can also be used to minimize power. This way, the development gap between these two modes of operation vanishes, turning them in the same level of development. The second contribution of this dissertation is about the noise margin maximization, in order to optimize the stability of DSL networks. In this direction, this dissertation presents a new algorithm of multiuser margin maximization, which shows superior performance when compared to a previous algorithm published in the specialized literature.

This work describes the development of a prototype for the application of optimization strategies for practical xDSL systems. The prototype described here is made of software components and an experimental setup, capable of generating IP tra c and noise signals, in order to evaluate the performance of a complete DSL network in a controlled environment, with commercial unmodi ed hardware. The results obtained with the prototype as well as its applications for optimization of practical xDSL systems are presented.

Demand for bit rate is increasing every year, mainly due to the incorporation of online applications into people's life. So the companies which provide this type of service are always investing in research for technologies that enable increased bit rate with a good value for money. Following this perspective, this paper presents transmission phantom mode, which aims to increase the overall rate of transmission of bits in DSL systems when multiple copper pairs available. Here we also show results and discussions on performance of phantom mode. We discuss procedures for performing measurements in phantom mode at frequencies from 100 kHz to 300 MHz, in a way that allows the measurement of phantom mode and deferential mode with the same setup. New results are presented on the direct channel, far-end crosstalk (FEXT) and mode conversion for a Cat-5e cable of 50 meters. Among other facts, we verify large deference’s in the direct channel phantom mode when comparing rolled and unrolled cable measurements, and that manner how we build the phantom mode greatly inuences the behavior of the curves of direct channel, FEXT and mode conversion. We also present results of estimating bit rate when using phantom mode and deferential mode simultaneously, and observed that there is a gain of up to 60 when we use this two modes and vectoring.
