Diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM1) is a chronic degenerative disease of major impact on the quality of life of children and adolescents. The DM1 affects predominantly children and young adults under 30 years of age with peak incidence from 10 to 14 years of age. As a chronic disease it involves changes in daily habits, and rule following becomes a key behavior to achieve such changes. This study aimed to examine factors that influenced the behavior of following the rules prescribed for the treatment of adolescents diagnosed with DM1. These rules relate specifically to the measurement of the blood glucose, the usage of the diet plan in choosing the menu and the application of insulin. The study included two adolescents aged 14 and 17 years, diagnosed with DM1, which had difficulties in controlling the disease according to medical evaluation. Also included as participants of this study were those responsible for each adolescent. The following survey instruments were used: 1) Set of interviews with the parents; 2) Inventory of parenting styles; 3) Questionnaire to evaluate the quality of life of adolescents with DM1; 4) Set of interviews with the adolescents; 5) Diabetes social support questionnaire – family version; and 6) Self monitoring forms for Treatment Compliance Behavior. The data collection was performed in the households of the adolescents. The procedure involved the following steps: 1) Selection of participants; 2) Individual interviews with the parents/guardians; 3) Individual interviews with the adolescents, including applications for inventory on their support network, characterization of the baseline behavior of measuring blood glucose, tracking diet plan, and insulin administration, interviews with positive feedback, and final interview. The results from the analysis of compliance behaviors and from the environmental factors reported by each participant throughout the research identified that the participant which emitted compliance behaviors appropriately had a good quality of life, a good level of knowledge about DM1, his parents owned a positive parenting style, perceived support provided by family, besides having a social condition satisfactory to meet the needs of the family. But the participant with a low compliance, although demonstrating a good quality of life, his parents were using a lot of negative practices, despite their parenting style being also positive, the family support perceived by the participant was inconsistent and his social status was insufficient to provide all the tools necessary for his treatment compliance. Thus, it was possible to analyze the factors that influence compliance to treatment, however further research should be conducted using a larger number of participants and also have a longitudinal character, with long-term monitoring to verify the effect of the variables described in the research along the lives of the participants.

Brazilian migration to Guyana as livelihood strategy: a case study approach
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2007-07-13) CORBIN, Hisakhana Pahoona; ARAGÓN VACA, Luis Eduardo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2713210031909963
This mixed method case study was conducted with focus on Brazilian migration to Guyana as a livelihood strategy. The study examined, described and analyzed the migration and adaptation process, and the socioeconomic and physical environmental impacts and concerns of the livelihood activities adopted by these migrants in Guyana. Questionnaires, interviews, documentaries, archival records, and observations (direct and participant) were utilized to gain an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon under study. The study confirms that throught a strong networking system, Brazilians from lower socioeconomic and cultural classes are able to adopt migration as a livelihood strategy, as they migrate in a step-wise manner along a well-defined route to Guyana. Maintaining this networking system, migrants have been able to respond swiftly to new livelihood activities both internally and internationally. In Guyana, mining and prostitution are the major livelihood activities that have given rise to both positive and negative socioeconomic consequences and concerns and, negative environmental impacts.

Buscando significações na aprendizagem de inglês no ensino médio: uma experiência de fomento de autonomia
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009-04-24) NATIVIDADE, Elda Carla Barata; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312
It presents the results of a research in the field of Language Teaching and Learning which aimed at developing students autonomy regarding their appropriation of English as a foreign language in a country school. The study was developed as an imposing need to make English learning meaningful and motivating to students in this school. Motivation was seen as an important element in the construction of this knowledge. The study relied on previous research by Brown e Jacob (apud WILLIAN et al, 2004) e Harmer (2001), and on motivation; and Holec (apud PAIVA, 2005), Dickinson (1994), Little (1991), Benson (2001), and Paiva (2007) on autonomy in foreign languages learning. Methodological guidelines were borrowed from Hadley (2004) and Viana (2007) and especially on how to conduct data collection, organization, and analysis in an action - research format. This study was conducted by he teacher-researcher, based on data collected by the author in her High School freshman class with twenty eight students enrolled in the evening class of a public school in São Francisco do Pará. The data analysis proved that a meaningful learning must have students‟ daily life as a starting point to any activity. It also proved that situations which demand students using the language in real contexts makes learning more meaningful to them at the same time that it fosters autonomy. The activity conducted for this study, called Posters‟ show, aimed at developing quality behavior in students towards learning because, taking autonomy as a background, students‟ daily life, their life experiences, and their responsibility towards the learning situation are far more important elements to experience than mastering grammar rules or even covering the complete content of each academic year. Results showed that positive outcomes because a change occurred in students perceptions on learning, evidencing that it is possible to enhance autonomous attitudes when proper guidance is given to students.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2025-03-14) SOUZA, Luiz Humberto de Oliveira; COSTA, Renato Pinheiro da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0413733044020733; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7132-0579
This study investigates the use of active teaching methodologies in History classes at the Monte Horebe School, located in the municipality of Acará-Pa, based on a central concern: the traditionalist teaching approach adopted at the institution. The problem identified was the teaching practice of the History curriculum component, which is characterized by the passive transmission of content, with an emphasis on the memorization of historical facts, with no practical significance for the student's life, a practice dubbed by educator Paulo Freire as “banking education”. To address this problem, the study was carried out using qualitative research, with a focus on a case study carried out with students in the 9th year of primary school at the aforementioned school, using the methodology of participant-action research. Ethnographic elements were used, such as field observations, interviews and research diary notes. The educational product of this investigation was a workshop-class based on Problem-Based Learning (PBL), with the aim of transforming the school's pedagogical practice and overcoming the traditional model of teaching History that is still in force.

Estilos e estratégias de aprendizagem do inglês: um estudo de caso no ensino fundamental
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2007-08-31) MONASSA, Sulenir Palmeira; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312
This study aims at investigating the learning styles and strategies of a group of Elementary School students of a Belém public school. We also identified students goals and objectives in learning English. The principles of qualitative research were adopted to collect and analyze the data of this case study. The instruments used were questionnaires, self- verbal report protocols and field notes. Browns (1994) Felder and Solomans (1993) and Oxfords (2003) proposals provide rationale in order to classify learning styles. We also chose Oxfords theories (1990) to describe and classify learning strategies (2003). In order to make the foreign language learning (FLL) in public schools more effective, we describe two models of strategies based instruction which can be integrated into regular courses: Strategies-Based Instruction (SBI) by Cohen (1998) and Strategy Training Model by Oxford (1990). Results of this study describe the styles and strategies of a class of 8th graders of a Public School. We state that once these characteristics are identified, teacher and students can create learning situations which are more effective.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2023-05-22) JOSAPHAT, Amaiama Lamarão; OLIVEIRA , Assis da Costa; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1543002680290808; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3207-7400
This Diagnostic Report constitutes the final master's work at the Graduate Program in Law and Development of the Amazon at the Federal University of Pará and is intended for the case study of the Pole of Mediation and Conciliation Elias Sousa, the Indigenous Pole of the Community of Maturuca, located in the State of Roraima, is also the first Indigenous Pole in Brazil. Initially, the report makes a general presentation of the work, discussing the guiding questioning for the development of the research, which is the invisibilization of indigenous legal systems in Brazilian law, and proposes to analyze how the creation of the Polo Indígena de Maturuca took place fundamental for the effectiveness of indigenous legal systems. Methodologically, the research is developed from the interlocution of Law and Anthropology, having as a guide the idea of legal sensibilities developed by Clifford Geertz; as well as the search for foundations on the decolonization of research according to Linda Smith's considerations. From then on, the report advances to a historical context about the invisibility of indigenous peoples since the arrival of colonizers. Next, the report addresses an analysis of the presence and approach to issues inherent to indigenous peoples in the international and national order. Finally, for the final delimitation of the general presentation of the work, the report covers the theoretical foundations referring to legal pluralism and indigenous jurisdictions. After presenting the research, the report proceeds to the case study of the Maturuca Indigenous Pole, having as its starting point the preliminary examination of the spatial context in which the Pole is inserted, that is, the State of Roraima; the performance of the Indigenous Council of Roraima; and the jurisprudential precedents of the Court of Justice of Roraima in the recognition of indigenous jurisdictions. After the factual contextualization of the diagnosis, the report finally proceeds to carry out the case study of the Maturuca Hub, describing how its creation and implementation took place; how was the community's relationship with the local Judiciary, and how this relationship improved with the creation of the Polo; how the community dealt with conflicts before the Polo was implemented and how this treatment was given after its creation; the effects arising from the implementation of the Polo; and the verification of the Polo's autonomy in relation to the Court of Justice of Roraima. Finally, the report lists the analysis of the data collected, with the verification of the experience of the Maturuca Hub as a precedent for the effectiveness of indigenous jurisdictions and the development of mechanisms for affirming these jurisdictions; as well as pointing out the perceived challenges for the effectiveness of indigenous legal systems in the Brazilian legal system.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 1995-08-04) PARENTE, Layane Joyce Rosa Maia; FREITAS, Nádia Magalhães da Silva; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2982253212145468; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0042-8640; RODRIGUES, Isabel Cristina França dos Santos; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0226549641470972; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5750-5868
The present research aims to bring the construction process of an educational case study based on real narratives in the Amazonian context about the river dolphin, resulting in the elaboration of an educational product. The scenario for the construction of the case was the municipality of Mocajuba, where the methodology was carried out, which involved the collection of narratives from the community. These narratives provided the input for the construction of the case. The dolphins are animals that inhabit the rivers of the Amazon and are currently classified as endangered. The main threats related to the group are linked to the use of their organs and tissues for medicinal and mythical-religious purposes, as well as retaliation by fishermen and hunting of the animal. The result of this work confirmed what has already been described in the literature about the conflicts arising from the human-animal relationship, as well as the appreciation relationship when the animal is seen from an exploitative point of view. Thus, the case study "the judgment of the dolphin" was constructed as a tool to raise discussions about the problems involving these animals.

The objective of the research is to evaluate the applicability of the DMAIC methodology- Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control, or: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control and other quality tools in the correction of non-compliance problems related to the execution of projects in the housing construction of the My Home, My Life Program. To analyze the current situation, the parameters and criteria of control in the works and the forms of treatment of non-conformities that occurred in the construction of the My Home, My Life housing complex in the cities of Itacoatiara and Manacapuru in the State of Amazonas. As for the results, the research demonstrates that the use of the DMAIC method allows to improve procedures and techniques in a project, resulting in continuous learning, which is one of the bases for improving the quality of processes and a requirement for its reproducibility. The use of the method allows achieving both the improvement of the performance of the processes, in the execution phase of the work, as in the subsequent phase, as it presupposes the concept of correction of non-conformities as a continuous process, analytically based and subsidiary to the corrective measures adopted. Permanent control allows not only to avoid new non-compliant situations, but also to develop a database that enables the constant improvement of performance monitoring processes and methods. In this way, through the feedback of the process to other projects, it is intended to reduce the rate of construction pathologies in order to encourage continuous quality improvement in Civil Construction housing projects.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2005) FREITAS, Maria Natalina Mendes; GONÇALVES, Terezinha Valim Oliver; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0496932429575513
This is a work of qualitative research, focused on a study of case, using a narrative approach about Science Teaching in Multiseried Classes, specifically related to the function of the social and discursive interactions in the development of processes of Science teachinglearning. The practice investigation about Science teaching was developed with a teacher and her thirty students from kindergarten and elementary school of Basic Education in a public school of multiseried education, in State of Pará. It takes about 60 minute by boat to arrive at this city. We aimed to configurate how a teacher of multiseried classes deals with the variety of knowledgement of her students and we also aimed to investigate the social and discursive interactions developed in the classroom, considering the development of educational contents in the Science teachinglearning process in different grades the teacher works. The construction of this practice resulted from the following methodology: (a) Direct comments, because it could perceive the relations of the social and discursive interactions among pupils and pupils, pupils and teacher, as well as the participation and the interaction of the pupils in the development of the activities; (b) Field notes, on which we wrote down the worked contents and the interactive and discursive processes developed in the classroom; (c) Photographs and footages, which registered the interactions and discussions during the class. We used a microgenetic analysis to show a a practice built and developed in the social and discursive interactions among teacher and students during the selected episodes under analysis, considering the changes in the communicative approach and the standards of the speech. In this study, we used Mortimer and Scott (2003) approach to analise the intentions, the content, the communicative approach, the standards of interactions and the teacher interventions. These changes make possible the recognition and overcoming of the conflict for the group of students in a pace that benefits students perceive standards and ways of thinking science. There was educational room to the development of each student discourse, thoughts and actions and they could interact with the teacher, partners and researcher. This research showed the importance of involving Science contents in students life in order to facilitate the scientific concepts understanding. The results also showed that the office technical team of the Educational Secretary of the city needs to take responsability for (i) helping the teachers effectively in multiseried classes (ii) make possible educational support to teachers and students (iii) calling the attention to the importance to the construction of a curriculum which values various experiences, knowledges, values and specific cultural features that live and are from Amazonia to give new dimension to the teachinglearning process from any school contents, specifically at multiseried classes.

Organização comunitária e desenvolvimento territorial: o contexto ribeirinho em uma ilha da Amazônia
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2006-12-01) RODRIGUES, Eliana Teles; MATHIS, Armin; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8365078023155571
This is a case study about riverine communities in the Amazon estuary. It analyzes the social and spatial dynamics, as well as the community organization of the resident population in Combu Island. The spatial and territorial organization of the communities is investigated through the production and reproduction of the material and economic life, in the search of experiences which can reference other rural communities vis-à-vis the debate on regional development. Fifty-four family units were studied in four communities: Igarapé Combu, Beira do Rio, Piriquitaquara, and Furo do Benedito. For being a nature study to interdisciplinary it adopts the socioeconomic, politcs and cultural perspective having as focus the question a) How the communities of Combu island have adapted to exogenous interferences and its survival strategies; b) Which differentiation, strategy between the groups and its forms of organization and articulation; c) What generates greater community involvement. Disarticulation is an unfavorable factor in a community organization, implying fewer possibilities for communities to be a part of the society as active citizens in the development process, and in directing their own destinies. Maintaining the environment and the welfare of the population implies information and formal knowledge allied to local specific practices; the higher the degree of knowledge and local permanence, the higher is the identification, valorization, and cooperation among the riverine populations. The absence of such aspects indicates a low degree of development, or isolated practices where such aspects are hardly perceived. Alone, communities are not able to come up with dynamics to promote their welfare, but forest management developed by the riverine populations has served as a base for economic growth. Such practices may enhance açaí production the main local income source increasing families purchase power. This reinforces the argument for partnerships between institutions and communities, in order to promote environmental and social sustainability.

The present document define the current profile of the Fundamental and High School in Brazil re-visiting the data base of official institutions (INEP and IBGE). We have found suspicious coincidences between, income concentration and educational abstinence, which we suggest is a fuel for the poverty cycle in our country. Qualitative aspects of the Brazilian school were also obtained in order to describe the difficulties to implement high quality education in Brazil at these levels. We also investigate through the case study methodology two summer courses designed to implement and test the Problem Based Learning (PBL). The classes were dedicated to teachers and students of High School. Using straight observation and inferences took from questionnaires applied to students and teachers, before and after each vacation course (in 2004 and 2005), the impact of the PBA over students and teachers was measured. The results revealed many difficulties and perplexities presented by the teachers and the students, such as the difficulty to relate experiments and contents from the text books, the almost complete abstinence of experimentation in the High School, difficulties to distinguishing hypothesis and fact, etc. The Problem Based Learning was accepted by all (students and teachers) as a possible way to change Science and Biology. However, its broad dissemination will demand qualification on a large scale, management and leadership to start the process of change, salary improvements and better infrastructure in the schools for experimentation. Using methodologies similar to the PBL, as an alternative for qualification, research universities need to be directly engaged in the process of renewal. An educational pact has to be built to reform the education and that action should include Managers and Teachers of Middle and High School, Secretaries of Education (from the State and the District), State and District Government, Ministries of Education and of Science and Technology, Research Universities and Fund Agencies, so that the effort can achieve national dimensions.
