Long Term institutions for Elderly are emerging alternatives care unfamiliar. This research analyzes the demographic profile and functional capacity of elderly in residential care situation in Belém /Pará. It addresses on a descriptive, cross-sectional, and quantitative. 73 seniors were attended in two public institutions, and they were assessed by the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Katz Index and Lawton and in cases of the presence of cognitive decline, the scale of the Disability Assessment for Dementia (DAD). According to the research some aspects were noticed as, the predominance of females (53 %) and unmarried elderly, aged 60-99 years, the absence of family as the main reason for institutionalization (42.5 %), Hypertension disease was the most prevalent (45.3 %). Given the assessment of cognition and functional capacity was found the prevalence of cognitive decline (52.1 %); independent elderly (83.8 %) for the Basic Activities of Daily Living ( ADL ) and Dependent moderate for Instrumental Activities Daily Living (IADL) in the group without cognitive decline , and high prevalence of severe dependence for IADL in the group with cognitive impairment . The study allowed us to outline the profile about elderly living in public ILPI in Belém, the data indicates resemblances the rest of the country as the largest number of women and higher prevalence of chronic diseases that cooperate to functional disability. It is emphasized, there is a lack of preventive measures to the maintenance functional capacity, through the operation of public policies and multidisciplinary performance
