(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2012-03-02) VELOSO, Nircele da Silva Leal; MENDES, Ronaldo Lopes Rodrigues; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3384080521072847
Water is a natural resource of significant economic, social, environmental and in many cases also cultural. Regions are suffering water shortages, both in quantity and quality. The Amazon, ironically known as a reserve of water resources, is also hostage to the lack of access to clean drinking water. The water supply in the islands of Belém is poor and propose alternatives that will ensure access to decent water quality is a major challenge. In this sense, the objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of the use of rainwater for potable supply in the islands and Grande and Murutucu as a way of promoting local sustainable development. For this, we carried out to characterize socioeconomic survey of the forms of water applied in the area, as well as analysis of the perception of the riverine and the use of rainwater, according to aspects of acceptability and interest in acquiring. It was found that 43% of riparian needs are remedied by buying potable water coming from wells (not proven), which spends about 11% of family income, spending more than the residents of Belém with water. Still on supplies nearly 20% consume water from the river. The investigation revealed that the Grande Island about 45% of the population being treated through the water, another area in this figure is 30%. It was found that 61.4% of residents of Grande Island are in favor of consumption of rainwater, since the island Murutucu portion corresponds to 50.4%. The aspect that inhibits the use of rain water is the taste. Although environmentally and socially viable, the proposed system proved financially unfeasible since most of the population earn less than a minimum wage, thus the system is partly possible.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2007) ANDRADE, Ercio Oliveira; GONÇALVES, Tadeu Oliver; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6789250569319668
The objective of this research is to understand how the teachers of the Islands of Belém consist as teachers throughout a trajectory of professional formation in the partner-cultural conditions of this region with prominence to its mathematics knowledge. It is about teachers located in schools of five Islands managed by Belem City Hall and Para government Pará. Once diversified forms of knowledge are involved, we theoretically base our research in the authors: Tardif, Lorenzato, Fiorentini e Lorenzato, Imbernón, Smole e Diniz, Charlot, Zabala e Perrenoud. The methodology is based on the researcher’s participant observation (also called Ethnographic) and in the qualitative analysis of the obtained information. The research is based on the inquiry that searched to understand how the teachers in Island of Belém had formed with registered data: in the historical-cultural identification of the islands, of the respective schools, through interviews with the respective teachers, through data obtained in classroom through the mathematics course for initial series for teachers of the island, photos, videos and sound recording. The research shows that the teachers of initial series deal with mathematical concepts in classroom, thus they teach mathematics. It evidences the challenges and the necessity of a deeper knowledge of these concepts, as well as the perseverance before the difficulties found in the search of continued formation and also in the development of the teacher’s practice. The analysis shows that these teachers elaborate and elaborate again their knowledge through the development of their professional practice and also it identifies the search for knowledge by these teachers.

A sustentabilidade de tecnologias sociais de abastecimento de água de chuva: o caso de comunidades insulares de Belém-PA
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2013-09-26) DIAS, Adriana Dias e; FARIAS, André Luís Assunção de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5310171409459863; MENDES, Ronaldo Lopes Rodrigues; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3384080521072847
The islands Grande and Murutucu (areas) as well as in other areas of the Amazon river, the villagers do not have basic sanitation, which contributes to end up ingesting water from rivers without any treatment or pay for water quality dubious, a fact that reveals the existence of a trade before the right to potable water. Consequently, in the absence of water quality, this research has the basic assumption that the systems of rainwater (SAAC), built by UFPA the islands of Bethlehem are sustainable because they respect local specificities. To prove this hypothesis, this study has adapted the method of the Barometer of Sustainability, defining five dimensions (environmental, social , economic, political - institutional and technical- operational) and their respective themes and indicators in order to support the evaluation of Social Technologies. The method of sustainability assessment revealed that, in general, are SAACs an intermediate position in relation to sustainability. The most positive contribution to this assessment comes from the political- institutional dimension, located in a potentially sustainable situation, confirming the potential of these technologies to boost rural development for local communities.

The Aςaizeiro (Euterpe Oleracea Mart.) is one of the main sources of income and consumption for people (local farmer families known as ribeirinhos) living in the municipal district of Belém, State of Pará. They manage the fruit of the aςaizal (aςaí palm trees) and, among the other products, the palm heart, commonly known as palmito. The objective of this study was to identify and classify the different agricultural practices used in the management of native aςaizais. The analysis include a study of the different types of management used by the ribeirinhos with the objective of contributing to the implementation of proposals of management of native aςaizais. The research was undertaken in two main islands in Belém, known as Ilha de Paquetá (Paqueta island) and Ilha Grande (Big Island). The study approach was based on the methodology of the diagnostics of agrarian systems, which involve interviews with both open and closed questions. Twenty-two families from Ilha Grande and thirty-one families from Ilha de Paquetá were interviewed, and the questions involved issues concerning the family, the living environment, patrimony, the agrarian situation, income, techniques used in the management of açaizal and commercialization. Research findings showed that the system of management of native açaizais has gone through three phases. In the first phase, the collection of the açaí fruit is basically for consumption. In the second phase, the palm heart started to be commercialized and the açaí fruit continues to be used for consumption. In the third phase, the actual system of management is oriented to the production of the açaí fruit for commercial and consumption purposes, with the palm heart contributing additional income. Findings from the survey showed that the three main techniques used in the management of açai crop are intensive, moderate and natural cropping (without handling). The intensive 6 handling requires intensive labor in the açaizais and the ribeirinhos income comes basically from the açaí fruit. This type of technique has shown to yield the best overall results. The moderate handling requires less labor in the açaizal and ribeirinhos complement their income from other sources. The natural cropping (without handling) just involves the harvest of the açaí fruit and the ribeirinhos income comes from activities away from the farm.
