A Cidade dos Lázaros: isolacionismo, políticas públicas e lepra no Pará (1900-1934)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-06-28) VIEIRA, Elis Regina Corrêa; SANJAD, Nelson Rodrigues; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9110037947248805; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6372-1185
At the end of the XIX century and the beginning of XX, leprosy went through a process of singularization marked by an intense debate about etiology, therapy and prophylaxis of the disease. In this context, there was a theoric effort to consolidate leprosy as a disease caused by a bacillus and transmitted by contagion. At the same time, if the disease was contagious and its means of transmission was uncertain, the idea of isolating the patients was the only way of avoiding the spread of the disease became strength. In Brazil, many doctors and intellectuals participated in an international network of scientists that debated about the disease. In the same context, the health movement demanded that the Union increase its responsibilities in public health. The leprosy prophylaxis was benefited by these discussions and the federal government started to implement several leprosariums in partnership with the state government. Lazarópolis do Prata, in the state of Pará, was created in this context. It was installed in 1923 and officially opened in June 1924. My thesis proposes that doctors created a model of isolation to Lazarópolis, however, the experience of different individuals recreated the senses of this isolation, challenging the hygienist ideal of a kind, disciplined, and submissive "lázaro" to the doctors. Thus, even an institution seen as a model faced challenges such as escapes and violations to the established norms.

Ilhas da zona costeira amazônica: relevância, desenvolvimento e isolamento geográfico
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2020-05-08) QUARESMA, Arley Martins; SZLAFSZTEIN, Cláudio Fabian; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1348005678649555; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2855-2056
Studies related to islands in the Amazon, whether of greater or lesser importance, are minimal, although more than 50% of the municipalities in the Amazon coastal zone-ZCA have a territorial area composed of islands. However, the islands face numerous barriers such as isolation, territorial development and management aspects. In this sense, the general objective of this work is to analyze the importance of islands in the Amazon coastal zone, and the relationship of development and geographic isolation on islands in the municipality of BelémPA. The methodological procedures involved two stages, the first encompassing (i) Analysis of the population of the ZCA municipalities (ii); Identification of the GDP of the municipalities in the coastal zone; (iii) classification of municipalities in the coastal zone that have islands in their territorial composition; (vi) Quantification of the total areas of islands in the ZCA and (v) Percentage of protected areas in island areas. The second stage consisted of a multicriterio analysis that determined the degree of isolation of the most relevant islands in the municipality of Belém-PA. The determination of the degree of isolation took into account two indicators: Accessibility and Connectivity and their respective variables. The data showed that in the ZCA, especially the islands, it has an expressive relevance in terms of economy, territorial area, and areas of environmental conservation. It was also found that the most isolated islands have been fed different conditions of autonomy and development. Islands with a lower degree of isolation have physical connections and intense connectivity, a way in which they reduce isolation. In such connections, the islands most prone to development are not those closest to the mainland, but those with the greatest service offerings.

“No olho do furação”: a construção projeto de isolamento social frente ao Covid-19, em um grupo indígena na Amazônia
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2021-06) POTIGUAR JUNIOR, Petrônio Lauro
Here we expose this experience report, the result of a journey of five months of field research in the village Mapuera, where several indigenous groups live, generically called “Wai Wai Ethnicity”, in the city of Oriximiná, northwest of the state of Pará, because of the final phase of the doctoral thesis that is underway. Here we present the moments of distress and concerns experienced by the author of this report and native people in this place, in the first manifestations of the Covid-19 pandemic, here denominated “eye of the hurricane”, in March 2020. This experience leads us to the following question: How could an anthropologist help in the pandemic context that affects indigenous groups, especially in Mapuera? From that question, articulations were made involving the cacique chief, leadership, Mapuera Health Council, leaders of the local evangelical church, teachers and health professionals who provide service on the scene by Ovídio Machado Foundation, in front of the Guamá Tocantins- DSEI-GUATOC Sanitary District, focused on the development of a social isolation project. Until the first half of June 2020, moment of field departure, the referred project had not been used, since no case of Covid-19 had 1 Doutorando em Sociologia e Antropologia/PPGSA UFPA; Mestrado em Agricultura Familiar e Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Also news reports that, despite the non adherence to the “Social Isolation project” by the DSEI-GUATOC, its production served as a parameter for the development of a protection plan for the health team and the native people of the place, revealing one of the goals of this proposition: Inspire public policy actions in times of pandemic to protect indigenous peoples in the Amazonia, regardless of whoever they are.
