Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Assessment of surface temperatures of buffalo bulls (Bubalus bubalis) raised under tropical conditions using infrared thermography(FEPMVZ Editora, 2016-04) BARROS, Daniel Vale; SILVA, Lílian Kátia Ximenes; KAHWAGE, Priscila Reis; LOURENÇO JÚNIOR, José de Brito; SOUSA, Jailson Silva; SILVA, André Guimarães Maciel e; FRANCO, Irving Montanar; MARTORANO, Lucieta Guerreiro; GARCIA, Alexandre RossettoThis paper aimed to evaluate the surface temperatures of buffalo bulls using infrared thermography, considering four distinct anatomical parts over time, and to correlate surface temperatures and thermal comfort indexes. The humid tropical climate (Köppen's Afi) was predominant in the research station where the experiment was performed and the trial lasted from April to August. Ten bulls (n=10) were evaluated every 25 days (morning: 6:00-9:00; afternoon: 12:00-15:00) and the parameters assessed were respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT), and the thermograms of surface temperature for orbital area (ORB), right flank (RF), left flank (LF) and scrotum (SCR). Climatological data was continuously monitored and the Temperature and Humidity Index (THI) and the Index of Comfort of Benezra (ICB) were calculated. The average values of THI were ≥78, and significant differences between shifts were observed (P<0.05). The ICB ranged from 1.96 to 2.25 and significant differences were observed for shiftsand throughout the months (P<0.05). The averages of surface temperatures were RT=38.2±0.5°C, ORB=36.1±0.8°C, LF=33.5±2.5°C, RF=35.4±1.7ºC and SCR=33.3±1.1°C, which exhibited significant differences for shifts and throughout the months (P<0.05). Positive correlations were obtained between THI and ORB (0.72), RF (0.77), LF (0.75) and SCR (0.41) (P<0.0001). The maximum temperature of ORB showed the highest correlation with RT (0.58, P<0.0001). Therefore, the surface temperatures are subject to climatic variations and increase throughout the day, due to the variation in thermal comfort indexes, and the maximum ORB temperature was the parameter most related to rectal temperature. Lastly, the results indicate that IRT may be a useful non-invasive and accurate tool to detect the variations in ORB, LF, RF and SCR temperature in buffalo bulls.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Caracterização do uso comercial e de subsistência da fauna silvestre no município de Abaetetuba, PA(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2006-02-24) BAÍA JÚNIOR, Pedro Chaves; GUIMARÃES, Diva Anelie de Araújo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2891287458034896This work analyzed the use of local fauna by rural and urban populations in the municipality of Abaetetuba, PA (1°42.008’ W 048°54.009’), to study the feasibility of commercial breeding of wildlife in that region. Interviews were conducted with vendors and customers of the local street fair; local fauna destined for food consumption was monitored in the year 2005; riverside communities were visited and interviews conducted with the inhabitants of Capim, Xingu and Quianduba islands; captive breeding know-how of local rural producers was verified. Approximately 5,970 kg of wildlife meat belonging to eight ethno-species (opossums, deers, capybaras, paca, armadillos, black caiman, spectacled caiman e matamata) were sold at the local street faire, capybaras and caiman accounting for most of the sales, 64% and 34% respectively. Vendors were financially highly dependent on this activity, which generated a monthly income of as much as 600 reais. Consumers in Abaetetuba or near regions would purchase these products mostly due to cultural habits rather than for financial reasons. The primary subsistence activities (fishing and extraction of cabbage palm’s fruit) practiced by riverside populations have been declining or do not meet their feeding necessities. Hunting is still a common practice for some of the riverside inhabitants. 55 (38%) of them have hunted at least once in the one year period before this research was conducted and removed a total of 68 small sized animals, including opossums, agouties, armadillos, pacas, spiny rats and iguanas. Local farmers mentioned as favorable factors for breeding wildlife animals the protection of wildlife species and income generation; and as unfavorable the lack of technical and financial support, red tape, and high production costs. The formation of a participative management system, involving the community, government and private sectors is mentioned as a necessary condition for the implementation of commercial breeding of wildlife animals in this municipality.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Evolução e reversibilidade das lesões neurológicas e cardíacas em ovinos intoxicados experimentalmente por Ateleia glazioviana e Tetrapterys multiglandulosa(2008-03) ALMEIDA, Milton Begeres de; PRIEBE, Amanda Pantaleão da Silva; RIVERO, Beatriz Riet Correa; CORREA, Gabriela Riet; FISS, Letícia; RAFFI, Margarida Buss; SCHILD, Ana LuciaTo determine the reversibility of neurological and cardiac lesions in Ateleia glazioviana and Tetrapterys multiglandulosa poisoning, 3 groups of four sheep each were fed orally with the plants. In Group 1, 2 and 3, when sheep with nervous signs showed considerable increase of symptoms and risk of death, the plant administration was suspended. Group 4 with two sheep was used as control. Sheep from Group 1, fed 10g/kg during 6 days of fresh A. glazioviana collected in autumn were euthanized 8, 11, 16, and 21 days after the start of the experiment; they had shown regression of nervous signs, but had progressive cardiac lesions. Sheep from Group 2, fed during 8 days the same dose of fresh A. glazioviana collected in spring, were euthanized on days 9, 23, 38 and 68; they had shown regression of nervous signs and had no cardiac lesions. This suggests that the plant is less toxic in spring. Sheep from Group 3, fed 10g/kg during 11 days dry and ground T. multiglandulosa mixed with concentrated food, were euthanized on days 33, 33, 92 and 92; they had shown regression of nervous signs, and cardiac lesions were less severe on day 33 than on day 92. These results indicate that nervous lesions are reversible after the end of feeding, but cardiac lesions are progressive after discontinuation of the plant administration; these can be afterwards reversible if the animals do not anymore show clinical signs or die as a consequence of the poisoning. Results of those and previous experiments show that lesions of the nervous system are induced by lower doses than cardiac lesions and occur within a shorter period, what suggests that in spontaneous cases cardiac signs are always preceded by nervous signs, and that nervous signs can occur in the absence of cardiac lesions.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Manejo de Scaptotrigona Sp. (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponini) para polinização da rambuteira (Nephelium Lappaceum L.)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-07-31) LEÃO, Kamila de Sousa; CONTRERA, Felipe Andrés León; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3815182976544230; VENTURIERI, Giorgio Cristino; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7180149611727426Meliponini bees can be easily kept and they are important crop pollinators. This study aimed to manage a Scaptotrigona species to improve pollination in rambutan trees (Nephelium lappaceum L.). The first chapter analysed the phenological development (flowering and fruit phases) in rambutan crop. Two blossom periods per year were identified. The average cycle duration (from anthesis to harvest fruit point) was 123-128 days. The objective of the second chapter was evaluate the effect of Scaptotrigona sp. nests in rambutan fruit set. There were not significantly differences on rambutan fruit set upon bee presence or absence, although Scaptotrigona sp. presented high index of pollen fidelity to rambutan. The last chapter focused on a specific question about stingless beekeeping. It was tested whether a rational hive model (Embrapa) was better than a traditional hive (cabocla) for Scaptotrigona sp. management, by evaluating certain aspects, such as biological adaptation and management, . It was found that the studied hive (Embrapa) is a suitable model to rational creation of Scaptotrigona.
