This thesis brings within its scope the critical analysis of the main national and international methodologies of geotechnical cartography (IAEG, Australian, French, EESC-USP, IPT, IG-UFRJ and IG-SP), as well as the classification of a set of rules for the elaboration of geotechnical maps and charts in the Brazilian Humid Tropics. It also presents geotechnical mapping at the scale of 1:50 000, of the Metropolitan Region of Belém, in the State of Pará, comprising the municipalities of Belém, Ananindeua and Marituba. The methodology is based on the above-mentioned cartographic (conventions/ rules), and is presented in the form of eleven cartographic items: a documentary map of the Metropolitan Region of Belém, at a scale of 1:50 000; a documentary map of the central area of Belém, at a scale of 1:10 000; a gradient map; a geological map; a map of unconsolidated materials; a soil use map; a map of institutional areas and conservation units; a map of floodplain and mainland areas; a map of zones of permanent protection of water bodies; a chart of the preferential areas for the exploration of natural construction materials; and a chart of the preferential areas for the installation of sanitary landfills.

Shallow to medium depth subsurface geotechnical-lithological information is very important to project the foundation of civil engineering structures. Increasing demand of the residential and commercial buildings in Belém requires areas for expansion the urban region. Areas around the Macrodrenage project of Una Basin fulfill the conditions for this kind of requirement. Therefore, this area is chosen for the geophysical investigation to obtain geotechnical information of sub-soils. In the area studied is encountered a geotecnically rigid sand-sandstone bed underlying a soft organic clay zone. This bed is considered suitable for laying foundations by civil engineers. The depth to the top of this layer has been mapped using mainly geotechnical soundings, and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) profile. In the quantitative interpretation of geotechnical sounding known geotechnical-lithological information obtained through Standard Penetrating Tests (SPT) were taken into consideration. Finally, presented are the geotechnical-lithological sections, and 2D and 3D contour maps of the depth to the top of the rigid layer in studied area in order to help civil engineers project foundations.

Accomplishes the survey of the most commonly types of foundations used in the construction work, in the last decades in the city of Belém-PA; defining its characteristics, peculiarities, technical aspects of the its measurement, load capacity and, executive process. Identifies the type of the soil in which are laid with respective profile and geotechnical characteristics and divides the city into areas, mapping according to its geological profile; type of foundation; layer depth; executive process and, relative cost. The work is divided in four stages: the first one corresponds the literature review, regarding the study of the foundations, including the foundation historical development and soil mechanics in the world, in Brazil and in Belém; geotechnical research with characteristics of the soil in the area of Belém and, study of the Geographical Information Systems GIS. The second stage involving technical survey in construction and design companies, for development of database concerning the foundations used in the city. The third, to relates the ordination and technical analyses of the collected data and, the fourth consists on the writing of the final text and the elaboration of the city maps, based on the Geographical Information Systems GIS, in scale 1:10.000, concerning the type of foundation; the geotechnical profile of the soil; the soils kind and the executive process; the probable foundation depth and, the relative cost of the foundation in relation to the total of the work.
