“Beatriz era mais fêmea que mulher”: feminilidade e masculinidade pela imprensa de Belém (1940)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2022-09-27) MOREIRA, Jessica Maria Pastana; CANCELA, Cristina Donza; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8393402118322730
In this work we will try to analyze the speeches about femininity and masculinity, using the articles from the newspapers from Belém and other capitals, which reported and updated their constituents daily with information about the crimes, imprisonment and death of a woman named Beatriz da Conceição, during 1940s. The society of the time defined spaces and behaviors for women and men, from which they could be in the order or disorder line, according to values and conducts. So, using control mechanisms - medical and legal guidelines - in order to keep an eye on the subjects and their bodies, the speeches about feminine and masculine standards were daily disseminated through the newspapers. It was so important to follow the imposed rules that the newspapers of large or small circulation - Folha Vespertina, Folha do Norte, O Estado do Pará, A Província do Pará, A Vanguarda, and O Liberal - when reporting the proceedings about Beatriz, brought in their narratives partial perspectives, value judgments about what was allowed or condemnable to women and men. And in this discursive dynamics about the standards in the public and private areas - woman of modesty, mother, prostitute, working man, murderer, and others - the complexity of the subjects allowed us to understand the multiple femininities and masculinities, considering the social markers of the individuals, also going through issues related to sexuality, crimes, honor, morality and violence.

“Gordura não é coisa de macho”: reverberações da gordofobia nas masculinidades de homens gordos
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-04-03) MODESTO, Lucas de Almeida; LIMA, Maria Lúcia Chaves; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2883065146680171; ALVARENGA, Eric Campos; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5734378044087055; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1803-2356
Fatphobia is a form of intersectional, structural, cultural and institutionalized violence that affects fat people, discriminating against and harassing their bodies. It is present in different scenarios and is anchored in historically determined pathologizing knowledge, using health and beauty discourses in the media, in the cosmetics industry, pharmaceuticals and procedures that can “cure” a body that has been “sickened” by stigma social caused by this supposed knowledge. It is noted that the majority of productions that question fatphobia were produced by and about fat women, thus there is a need to include the male audience in this debate, since they are also affected by fatphobia in different ways. One of these ways is in the aspect of masculinity, considering the plural ways in which men are subjectivized in Brazil, I investigated how these processes can be fatphobic, considering that hegemonic masculinity has an athletic and muscular body pattern, with fat being an attribute of femininity. In this way, fat men start to have their masculinity put to the test because they possess in excess what the “successful man” seeks to eliminate.” I use an epistemology of authors who study masculinities in a plural way and from a feminist perspective and make use of transdisciplinary studies of fat corporalities. In this sense, this work aims to analyze how fatphobia affects the masculinities of fat men in the metropolitan region of Belém. It is a field research, with a qualitative approach that, through semi-structured interviews, aims to produce information that can be analyzed based on content analysis, in order to answer the proposed objectives. Nine men aged between 20 and 37 participated in the research. From the content analysis, three categories emerged, such as: “It is easier to talk about being fat than about being a man” where I discuss the processes of subjectivation of fat men based on the body, sports and compulsory cisheterosexuality; “It's basically the same outfit, it may not be what you like, but you have to wear it”, in which I talk about the love neglect and fetishization that fat men experience due to fatphobia and “It's my body, it's what I I have!" in which I talk about the forms of suffering and coping experienced by fat men. Finally, this research aims to raise the need for fat men to join the discussions and the anti-fatphobia movement, in addition, it also elucidates the need for future research with cisheterosexual fat men, since only one of the participants identifies in this way, thus, some questions could not be reached regarding this specificity, but highlighted possible idiosyncrasies.

This study explored the implications of the experience of preventive detention drawing on the oral histories of men being prosecuted for intimate partner violence. The oral history of 11 men living in Belém, Brazil being prosecuted for intimate partner violence and who had experienced preventive detention were collected using semi-structured interviews conducted between June and July 2015. The data was organized and categorized using thematic content analysis. The male narratives revealed physical and psychological implications and impaired social interaction, expressed by family exclusion, financial problems, and difficulty in finding employment. The analysis of the implications of experiences of preventive detention provided valuable insights into the importance of intersectorality, the creation of reflective spaces, and discussions in the field of gender inequality.

Um jornal na fronteira: breves considerações sobre a produção de masculinidades no semanário estudantil “o bonde”
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2017-12) BARDUNI FILHO, Jairo; FERRARI, Anderson; LOPES, Eduardo Simonini
The School of Agriculture and Veterinary Science (ESAV) was inaugurated in 1926 and, in 1969, federalized as Federal University of Viçosa (UFV). Between 1920 and 1940, the institution became a hegemonically male study site, nurtured in an institutional ethos of discipline, responsibility, and scientific rationality, termed the "Esavian spirit." This "spirit" aimed at a responsible and capable student body in the agrarian sciences. One of the vehicles to spread the spirit was the student newspaper "O Bonde", which in 1945 and 1963 gave voice to the students of that student campus. In order to analyze the articles published in those journals, we observed that "O Bonde" functioned as a policing device for attitudes that deviated from those espoused by the "Esavian spirit". And by denouncing strange movements among students, "O Bonde" became a frontier field of different regimes of subjectivation, especially with regard to the production of masculinities among the students
