(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016-12) SILVA, Luiz de Jesus Dias da; RODRIGUES, Carmem Izabel
This article aims to present an ethnography on the social network involved in the circulation process of the fish that arrives daily to the market Ver-o-Peso, the main warehouse fishing in the Amazon region, and is distributed throughout the city of Belém, Pará. Every day the fresh fish, captured and brought in fishing vessels, enters the urban area by the Pedra do Peixe, spatial and symbolic milestone in the market Ver-o-Peso, where it is is sold and distributed in the city and other places of the state and country, to reach the final consumers who are at fairs, markets, supermarkets and other retail outlets, as well as the diverse restaurants in the form of prepared regional dishes to the many lovers of the product. This extensive network of marketing of fish has economic, social, cultural, rules, informalities and conflicts that make the circulation of fish in Belém remains, to the present, very powerful, and the Pedra do Peixe at Ver-o-Peso as the centrality of their daily flow through the networks of relationships and sociocultural practices incorporated by workers and customers that circulate daily by this central space of the city.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016-03-08) SILVA, Luiz de Jesus Dias da; RODRIGUES, Carmem Izabel; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5924616509771424
This thesis aims to use ethnography to describe the social network involved in the process of fish circulation that arrives at Ver-o-Peso market on a daily basis and is distributed around the city of Belém do Pará. The problem is to understand how this commercialization still remains important, to this day, in the largest popular market in the city and to the city itself considering that it has been active since the Brazilian colonial days. The local ethnography becomes a cultural, historical and economic significance to the social life of Belém; the players in this market perform, between water and land, in a set of collective spaces, where an interpenetration of history to local culture exists, and is transformed in practices and update the senses. Methodologically, research was done using secondary data for theoretical foundation and the ethnographic research, with both direct and participant observation, once accepted in the field, sometimes, I was able to be help with the fish commercialization at the “Pedra”, at the Marambaia market and another point of sale in the city. Ver-o-Peso, was researched as a popular Market, symbolic system and of cultural importance for the city of Belém. There was an investigation concerning the origin of this fish trading space as a place of interrelations, its specific characteristics, local conflicts, laws or tacit regulations, and also the preparation of the fishing boat crews for a new journey, because once a fish load is sold, distributed throughout Belém and other places, a cycle ends and new preparations start again for the next trip in search for fish to be sold at this place. The fish distributed in Belém reaches final consumers in natura, and is found in street markets, small markets, supermarkets and other points of sale throughout the city, including the most diverse restaurants as regional dishes to people who love good food. During the final considerations, there was a reflection concerning the fish commercialization network and its economic, social and cultural aspects, its rules, informalities and conflicts, as a response to why fish circulation remains so vigorous after so many years, having Ver-o-Peso as the center of its flow, as well as, propositions collected from workers who labor there on a daily basis concerning its permanence at the local.

This paper aims to analyze some aspects of the practices carried out by fishmongers, rockers and glaciers from Ver-o-Peso through the sociability they perform. Assuming that the social practices are responsible for the signification or re-significations of the spaces, the Ver-o-Peso, the oldest commercial area of the city of Belém, is daily presented as a place for expressive activity of work, but eventually it is also a place of entertainment for those who work daily on it. From the festival, that takes place during the Círio de Nazaré in Belem, in order to render honors to the Saint, Our Lady of Nazareth, will be interpreted in the prism of an anthropological approach, the existed playful side in Ver-o-Peso. To perform the analysis, were carried out direct observation and interviews with those who work in the fish commercialization in Ver-o-Peso, more precisely in the Mercado de Ferro (Iron Market), as also known as Mercado de Peixe (Fish Market), which are responsible for carrying the Feast.

This work aims at identifying and interpreting, by the means of ethnography, the cultural heritage of people who work at the Ver-o-Peso, the most famous open-air market of Belém do Pará. The focus is not the architecture and landscape as it was acknowledged as cultural patrimony by Brazilian state law in 1977, but the heritage as a means for aggregating a social group, conveying a sense of belonging and collective identity, as well as a way for attributing values and meaning, even by people who are largely unaware of it. The investigation methods included participant observation and formal and informal interviews, in four field stages, from 2005 to 2007. The cultural heritage that was identified has an intangible nature, but also is present in tangible form, around a space, one territory according a proper timing, which is also considered a place, defined by its users social practices and everyday routines, that reach other dimensions of social life. In that space, objects, body expression, feelings and sociability associated and developed during everyday practices, full of meanings and possibilities stimulate imagination and activate memories. From generation to generation, this legacy is responsible, together with those who preserve, reinterpret, and transmit it, for the maintenance of the essence of Ver-o-Peso, as well as for the sense of belonging and identification of its workers with the place over the years. The despite of the negligence of institutions, these workers preserve their culture.
