Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Adhesive systems: important aspects related to their composition and clinical use(2010-06) SOUZA JUNIOR, Mario Honorato Silva e; CARNEIRO, Karina Gama Kato; LOBATO, Marcelo Figueiredo; SOUZA, Patrícia de Almeida Rodrigues Silva e; GÓES, Mário Fernando deThis literature review article addresses the types and the main components of different etch-and-rinse and self-etch adhesive systems available in the market, and relates them to their function, possible chemical interactions and influence of handling characteristics. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images are presented to characterize the interface between adhesives and dentin. Adhesive systems have been recently classifed according to their adhesion approaches in etch-and-rinse, self-etch and glass ionomer. The etch-and-rinse systems require a specifc acid-etch procedure and may be performed in two or three steps. Self-etch systems employ acidic monomers that demineralize and impregnate dental substrates almost at the same time. These systems are separated in one or two steps. Some advantages and defciencies were noted for etch-and-rinse and self-etch approaches, mainly for the simplifed ones due to some chemical associations and interactions. The SEM micrographs illustrate different relationships between adhesive systems and dental structures, particularly dentin. The knowledge of composition, characteristics and mechanisms of adhesion of each adhesive system is of fundamental importance to permit the adoption of ideal bonding strategies under clinical conditions.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Análise do emprego do cálculo amostral e do erro do método em pesquisas científicas publicadas na literatura ortodôntica nacional e internacional(2011-12) NORMANDO, Antonio David Corrêa; ALMEIDA, Marco Antonio de Oliveira; QUINTÃO, Cátia Cardoso AbdoTo evaluate, quantitatively, how often the researchers of orthodontic science have used the calculation of sample size and evaluated the method error in studies published in Brazil and in the United States of America.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Avaliação do conhecimento em odontologia e educação física acerca dos protetores bucais(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009-08) SIZO, Sérgio Rodrigues; SILVA, Edilson Santos da; ROCHA, Max Pinto da Costa da; KLAUTAU, Eliza BurlamaquiThis study had the aim to assess the level of knowledge of 150 Odontology and Physical Education undergraduation students concerning mouth guards in the city of Belém, Brazil. Besides that, we tried to provide further information to these future professionals through speeches and distribution of folders in which the main focus was the mouth guards, their indications, types as well as hygienization and storage. The participants in the research were in the last year of their specific undergraduation courses. The analysis of the results showed that 68% of the interviewed students still do not have suitable information on the mouth guards, but despite of that, in their majority they are aware of the risks many athletes face in sports which have physical impact. The authors believe the spread of the information on the use of mouth guards in sportive practice is relevant and aims to prevent trauma and promote health of general population.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Clinical evaluation of postoperative sensitivity using self-etching adhesives containing glutaraldehyde(2010-09) CHERMONT, Armando Brito; CARNEIRO, Karina Gama Kato; LOBATO, Marcelo Figueiredo; MACHADO, Sissy Maria Mendes; SOUZA JUNIOR, Mario Honorato Silva eThe present clinical study aimed to assess the postoperative sensitivity (POS) after 48 hours and seven days in occlusal restorations bonded with three different adhesive systems, two of them containing glutaraldehyde. The restorative procedures were performed using the three-step etch-and-rinse Adper SBMP-Plus adhesive (SBMP), the two-step etch-and-rinse Gluma Comfort One Bond + Desensitizer adhesive (GC+D) and the all-in-one self-etching/priming I Bond (IB) adhesive, which also has glutaraldehyde in its formula. All cavities were restored with Filtek Supreme nanoparticle composite resin. After 48 hours and seven days the patients were recalled and the postoperative sensitivity evaluated. The data analyzed by non-parametric Friedman test showed no significant differences in POS among the three tested groups after 48 hours and seven days.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Disputas pelo monopólio da prática odontológica e a criação da Escola Livre de Odontologia do Pará (1911-1914)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016-12) LIMA, Marcelino Carmo de; NASCIMENTO, Sulenir Candida da Silva; ALVES, Jose Jeronimo de AlencarThe objective of this research is to analyze the newspapers published in the State of Pará, in the period that preceded the creation, in 1914, of the Escola Livre de Odontologia do Pará, when dentistry was still practiced both by professionals trained in schools located outside the State and by the others. We find that the newspapers, the Estado do Pará and A Província do Pará, in the period before the creation of the Escola that is, from 1911 to 1914 published several news related to the formation and practice of dentistry. What was this news? We found that they expressed, above all, the controversies among the holders of diplomas obtained in schools of dentistry outside the State that sought to exclude the others. The claims about the monopoly of the profession, therefore, as the news shows, began even before the creation of the Escola do Pará.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Etidronate from Medicine to Endodontics: effects of different irrigation regimes on root dentin roughness.(2013-10) TARTARI, Talita; DUARTE JUNIOR, Anivaldo Pereira; SILVA JÚNIOR, José Otávio Carréra; KLAUTAU, Eliza Burlamaqui; SOUZA JUNIOR, Mario Honorato Silva e; SOUZA, Patrícia de Almeida Rodrigues Silva eAn increase in dentin roughness, associated with surface composition, contributes to bacterial adherence in recontaminations. Surface roughness is also important for micromechanical interlocking of dental materials to dentin, and understanding the characteristics of the surface is essential to obtain the adhesion of root canal sealers that have different physico-chemical characteristics.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Influence of whitening gel on pulp chamber temperature rise by in-office bleaching technique(2013-12) LORETTO, Sandro Cordeiro; LIBDY, Mylena Ranieri; RIBEIRO, Fabiola do Socorro da Rocha; BRAGA, Esther Marina França; CARNEIRO, Karina Gama Kato; SOUZA JUNIOR, Mario Honorato Silva eINTRODUCTION: Dental bleaching is a conservative method for the aesthetic restoration of stained teeth. However, whitening treatments are likely to cause adverse effects when not well planned and executed. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the influence of whitening gel on temperature rise in the pulp chamber, using the in-office photoactivated dental bleaching technique. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The root portion of an upper central human incisor was sectioned 3mm below the cemento-enamel junction. The root canal was enlarged to permit the insertion of the K-type thermocouple sensor (MT-401) into the pulp chamber, which was filled with thermal paste to facilitate the transfer of heat during bleaching. Three photosensitive whitening agents (35% hydrogen peroxide) were used: Whiteness HP (FGM), Whiteness HP Maxx (FGM) and Lase Peroxide Sensy (DMC). An LED photocuring light (Flash Lite - Discus Dental) was used to activate the whitening gels. Six bleaching cycles were performed on each group tested. The results were submitted to one-way ANOVA and LSD t-test (α<0.05). RESULT: The lowest mean temperature variation (ºC) was detected for Lase Peroxide Sensy (0.20), while the highest was recorded for Whiteness HP (1.50). CONCLUSION: The Whiteness HP and Whiteness HP Maxx whitening gels significantly affected the temperature rise in the pulp chamber during bleaching, and this variation was dependent on the type of whitening gel used.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A institucionalização do ensino odontológico na Escola Livre de Odontologia do Pará: dos “sacamuelas” aos cientificistas (1911- 1920)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016-07-07) LIMA, Marcelino Carmo de; ALVES, José Jerônimo de Alencar; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9586790409626243The Escola Livre de Odontologia do Pará (Free School of Dentistry of Pará) was created in 1914, with objective to disseminate modern dental education. It was founded by surgeonsdentists, doctors and pharmacists who occupied important positions in the political and institutional structure of the State. The objective of this research is analyze the conditions of dental education institutionalization in the Escola Livre de Odontologia do Pará. The research locates between 1911 and 1920, because it embraces a period in which changes were introduced in the regulation of the dental practice, through the creation of the School, until the moment she fits to national rules laid down for the Faculties, in which the since then became Faculdade Livre de Odontologia do Pará (Free College of Dentistry of Pará). In the research we tried to analyze: the antecedents of the creation of the School; the relationships in dental practice in Pará; the resistances in the process of introduction of new dental practices. For this, the school curricula were analyzed, the registers of the Congregation and discourse of teachers and rulers, etc. Research has shown that before the creation of the School had dentists and practical dentists, who worked at the local dental field. These groups competed for the monopoly of dental practice in Pará. The dentists sought to expand areas of modern dentistry in the midst of society. They argued that their dental practice was scientific. They did use speeches that disqualify the practical dentists. With the creation of the Escola Livre de Odontologia was promoted dental education in the region, aimed at expanding the number of health professionals trained in the order of modern discourse, ie, graduates in scientific discourse. The school sought to expand the space of modern dentistry in the middle of the local population, creating the clinic dental care, which intended to provide dental surgical services free the soldiers of the Military Brigade, interns of the Hospice for the Insane and students from public schools in Belém.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Odontalgia associada a variáveis socioeconômicas, psicossociais e saúde bucal(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2012-12) FERREIRA, Luale Leão; BRANDÃO, Gustavo Antônio Martins; GARCIA, Gustavo; COSTA, Ludmila da Silva Tavares; POSSOBON, Rosana de FátimaBACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Knowing factors associated with dental pain is important to provide adequate intervention and attention to this major health care problem. This study aimed at understanding the prevalence of dental pain as reason for the most recent dental appointment among 15-year old adolescents and at checking its association with socioeconomic factors, behavioral variables and oral health. METHOD: The probabilistic sample was made up of 592 students of 10 state schools. Dental pain variable was evaluated by questionnaires applied at the school. Clinical oral exam was performed according to World Health Organization’s criteria and remaining variables were investigated by self-applicable questionnaires. Data were classified by the Excel program and Odds Ratio was used to associate variables. RESULTS: From 592 participants, 33.44% have reported dental pain as reason for their most recent dental appointment. After statistical analysis, dental pain was associated with low income (p = 0.04), higher number of people living in the same home (p < 0.01), low frequency of daily tooth brushing (p = 0.01), long interval between dental appointments (p < 0.001), longer time elapsed since last dental appointment (p < 0.001), dental anxiety (p < 0.01), consumption of cariogenic food (p = 0.03), high dental caries experience (p < 0.01) and with the presence of untreated dental caries (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Dental pain is related to dental caries experience and activity and to socioeconomic and psychosocial factors, showing the need for further attention to these conditions. Keywords: Adolescent’s behavior, Dental pain, Oral health, Social conditions.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) One-Year Evaluation of a Simplified Ethanol-Wet Bonding Technique: A Randomized Clinical Trial(2013) ARAÚJO, Joyce Figueira de; BARROS, Thais Andrade de Figueiredo; BRAGA, Esther Marina França; LORETTO, Sandro Cordeiro; SOUZA, Patrícia de Almeida Rodrigues Silva e; SOUZA JUNIOR, Mario Honorato Silva eThe objective of this randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the clinical performance of adhesive restorations using a three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (TSER), a one-step self-etching adhesive (OSSE), and a simplified ethanol-wet bonding technique (EWBT) prior to the application of a composite resin in non-carious cervical lesions. Ninety-three restorations (31 for each group) were placed in 17 patients by a single operator. No cavity preparation was performed. After 6 and 12 months, the restorations were assessed by two previously trained examiners using modified Ryge criteria for retention (kappa=1.00) and marginal adaptation/staining (kappa=0.81), and the results were analyzed by Fisher's exact and Kruskal-Wallis tests, respectively. No significant differences were observed among groups at the 6- and 12-month time points for any of the assessed criteria (p≥0.05). The intra-group analysis performed by Cochran's test (for retention) and Wilcoxon test (for marginal adaptation/staining) revealed significant differences between the baseline/12-month time intervals in marginal adaptation in OSSE (p=0.0180) and in marginal staining in TSER (p=0.0117). The survival analysis for retention criteria performed using a log-rank test did not show significant differences (p>0.05). The restorations placed using the simplified EWBT performed equally well as the other adhesive strategies employed.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Oral health assessment in school program health: who and how?(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2018-06) OLIVEIRA, Erick Ely Gomes de; ARANTES, Diandra Costa; NASCIMENTO, Liliane Silva do; PONTES, Flávia Sirotheau CorrêaOral health is a constitutional right, with its own national policy which guides the relevance of its interrelation to general health within the integrality principles. This manuscript aims at understanding how oral health assessment and actions are observed within the School Program Health, through a qualitative study performed in the city of Belém, State of Pará, Brazil. The sample criterion consisted of 5 nurses, 5 teachers and 5 parents. A semi-structured script was used, written and transcribed with subsequent thematic analysis. The analysis revealed three thematic categories emphasizing the need for policy empowerment and practice in order to understand the meanings of oral health within the SHP as well as to enlarge its specificity in the interdisciplinary work scenario. Thus, it is clear that for the effective functioning of the school / health relationship, it is of utmost importance that SHP policy is applied and recognized while continuously seeking to strengthen the principle of integrality and extended clinic. The study also highlights permanent education and constant need for the participants’ skill improvement so that both students’ health care and life quality can be fully promoted.
