Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Artisanal fisheries of the Xingu River basin in Brazilian Amazon(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2015-08) NAHUM, Victoria Judith Isaac; ALMEIDA, Morgana Carvalho de; CRUZ, Rivetla Edipo Araujo; NUNES, José Leocyvan GomesThe present study characterises the commercial fisheries of the basin of the Xingu River, a major tributary of the Amazon River, between the towns of Gurupá (at the mouth of the Amazon) and São Félix do Xingu. Between April, 2012, and March, 2014, a total of 23,939 fishing trips were recorded, yielding a total production of 1,484 tons of fish, harvested by almost three thousand fishers. The analysis of the catches emphasizes the small-scale and artisanal nature of the region’s fisheries, with emphasis on the contribution of the motorised canoes powered by “long-tail” outboard motors. Larger motorboats operate only at the mouth of the Xingu and on the Amazon. Peacock bass (Cichla spp.), croakers (Plagioscion spp.), pacu (a group containing numerous serrasalmid species), aracu (various anostomids), and curimatã (Prochilodus nigricans) together contributed more than 60% of the total catch. Mean catch per unit effort was 18 kg/fisher–1.day–1, which varied among fishing methods (type of vessel and fishing equipment used), river sections, and time of the year. In most cases, yields varied little between years (2012 and 2013). The technical database provided by this study constitutes an important resource for the regulation of the region’s fisheries, as well as for the evaluation of future changes resulting from the construction of the Belo Monte dam on the Xingu River.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A atividade pesqueira nas ilhas do entorno de Belém(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2010) SCHALLENBERGER, Bárbara Heck; FRÉDOU, Flávia Lucena; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4779271407117528The Amazonian estuary is a region with favorable conditions for productivity, and fishery is an important activity. The islands of Combu, Onças and Mosqueiro, focus of this study, are part of the Amazonian estuary and fishing is an important activity. Based on this information, the objective of this study was to describe and to compare the different types of fishing at Combu, Onças and Mosqueiro islands, identifying sustainability indicators, considering the economic, social, ecological and technological aspects, which results may help to assist to generate subsidies for the formulation of public policies to the fisheries sector. Descriptive and numeric variables considering the different dimensions were used in order to describe the systems of fish production to make comparisons including both the systems and also the islands studied. For comparative statistical analysis only the numerical variables (means and percentages) were used from data collected by researches and from secondary data. Multivariate analysis; Cluster analysis and ordination (MDS) comparing the systems were applied to identify groups and the possible causes of the similarity between the systems for each island. On Combu´s Island it was identified the following fishery systems: matapi, gill net for consumption, block net , longline hook medium and longline hook large. On Onças´s Island it was observed the fishery systems matapi, gill net for consumption, gill net for commercial purpose, block net , longline hook medium and longline hook large. On Mosqueiro´s Island it was identified the fishery systems matapi, gill net commercial, longline hook medium and longline hook large. The analysis of systems in all dimensions showed that the island of Mosqueiro differs to the other islands. When analyzed separately by dimension Matapi system, block net and gill net consumption of the islandes Combu and Onças were very similar. However, systems observed in Mosqueiro´s Island differ from the other islands mainly considering the economic dimension. Based on the results, it can be said that fishing in the islands of Onças and Combu is for subsistence and the main activity is the vegetable extraction while fishing in Mosqueiro´s Island is commercial. Although fishing in the islands of Combu and Onças is only for subsistence, it´s also an important source of food and extra money for the residents. In Mosqueiro´s Island fishing has high economic importance, but the fishing areas are also exploited by fishermen from other parts of the state without any management initiatives by the government.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Estrutura, dinâmica e economia da pesca comercial do baixo Amazonas(Núcleo de Altos Estudos Amazônicos, 2009-12) ALMEIDA, Oriana Trindade de; RUFFINO, Mauro Luis; RIVERO, Sérgio Luiz de Medeiros; MCGRATH, David GibbsThe objective of this study is to characterize the fishermen and the fishing fleet of the Lower Amazon. The study is based on data collected from 3.144 boats operating out of the four main ports of Santarém. An economic analysis of the activities of these boats is based on fifty two interviews conducted specifi cally for that purpose. Results show that larger and smaller boats use essentially the same technology but significant differences exist in terms of fishing strategy. Smaller boats supply local markets, and their catches comprise a greater variety of fi sh species. Larger boats tend to specialize in a number of species of catfish, and generally supply fish processing plants. Smaller boats are less efficient in terms of CPUE (Kg/Fisherman/Day) but they are more economically efficient, earning more for each unit of money invested than larger boats. Most boats operating from Santarém have a storage capacity of less than 4t. This class size boat is thus an important source of food, income, and employment for Santarém and the surrounding region.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A pesca comercial dos tucunarés Cichla Spp. (Peciformes, Cichlidae) no Reservatório da UHE-Tucuruí, Rio Tocantins, PA(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2007) BOTELHO, Marília Cunha; BARTHEM, Ronaldo Borges; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4192105831997326This study describes the freshwater fishery based on peacock bass ("tucunaré") Cichla spp. in the lower Tocantins River, Pará state, northern Brazil, in the area influenced by the Tucuruí hydroelectric dam, with emphasis on the reservoir. The study was divided in two parts: Chapter I describes the commercial peacock bass fishery with relation to fishing gear, fishing strategies, utilized environments, seasonality, and local fishing management according to the fishermen’s perception. The fishermen’s local knowledge was studies, including their ethnobiological classification of peacock bass types, and the social, ecological, and economical aspects involved. Interviews with fishermen and participation observation were conducted in situ. The Tucurui reservoir peacock bass fishery is of great importance in the social and economic life of these fishermen and is their main income source. This fishery occurs in specific places in the lake and uses rudimentary methods and equipment. According to the fisherman, production is influenced by environmental variables and by the use of guild nets, that the fishermen say drives away peacock bass from the fishing environments. The use of environments for fishing is the main source of conflict among fisherman. Social relations among fishermen in a system of partnership and the presence of middlemen diminish the the fisherman’s income. Fishermen possess consistent knowledge on the ecology and behavior of peacock bass. Their system of fish classification recognizes three ethnospecies, two of which constitute a single scientific species. Chapter II treats peacock bass yields at landing points in the lake, from 1997 to 2003, according to data furnished by ELETRONORTE, and a measure of fishing effort was considered that was most adequate for these data. The data were analyzed according to port, fishing gear, type of boat, fishing grounds, and river flood cycle. The data demonstrated that different cities possess fishing fleets with their own characteristics and that these utilize nearby fishing grounds. The greatest yields were during periods of flooding and subsidence of water levels, with hook and line fishery being responsible for most of the catch. Canoes were the most used boats. The yield data at landing points indicate that this fishery is more important in cities and areas located on the lake. Fish yield for unit of effort only shows adequate statistical behavior when analyzed for fishing grounds and the adjusted units of effort are number of fisherman per days of fishing, after logarithmic transformation.
