Nature, as we see it today, has been shaped by human action. However, these actions in some cases have been destructive, making natural resources scarce. Over time, this exploration model has been questioned, emerging several proposals advocating for the ecological and environmental preservation, many of those, in the Amazon. Among several viable social and environmental alternatives, there were the Extractive Reserves, strongly defended by the Rubber Extracting Workers Movement, originally from the Brazilian state of Acre. Even as an alternative to the devastation of the environment and the local traditional culture, the Extractive Reserves, through the established rules in their Management Plan may, in some cases, unable some of the residents’ actions. Seeking to analyze, as assertive as it may be, this study aims to understand the influences created by the establishment of the Extractive Reserve in the Xingu River, located in an area named Terra do Meio (in a free translation “Middle Land”), in the Brazilian state of Pará, the lifestyle and social practices, management of natural resources adopted by the local families. The methodology used was locus immersion research, divided into two visits, between May and August 2012, where through a pre-formulated script, twenty-three families, residents of the reserve, were interviewed. Concerning the methods used to achieve such goal, there were informal conversations, hands-on observation, and direct observation. It was learned that traditional communities have undergone intense historical processes, many of those shattered by conflicts created by land expropriation and harassment by the local population, which corroborated to the establishment of a protected area. After the establishment of the Extractive Reserve, which has happened rapidly, attempting to cease the extraction of natural resources by external actors, the families have felt safer regarding their permanent stay in the area. However, the rules established in the Management Plan have not entirely been seized by them, which is justified by their non-participation in meetings (40%), miscommunication, once external actors language (managers) is not understood (26%), the passive participation of residents when choosing some of the rules and the existing faults in criteria when voting for counselors, both reported in 17% of the interviews. Even demonstrating misunderstandings about the established rules, most interviewed families (between 65% and 78%) complied to follow the rules. Their statements have been analyzed as an alternative to safe keep their lifestyle; even though they are enforced to comply, some residents report one another, deducting that there has continue to carry out the activities as they did before the creation of RESEX, getting outside the established norms. Besides, as the understanding of the rules was done in diferente ways, this may become their justification for non-compliance. It was learned that the families’ lifestyle, regarding activities has not been significantly altered. However, social relations among communities have been shaken due to the enforcement and misunderstanding of the rules, which was legitimized by the increase and externalization of the arguments and gossiping among residents.

Conhecimento e uso de plantas medicinais nas comunidades de uma unidade de conservação: uma contribuição para a gestão da APA Algodoal-Maiandeua
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2012-08-24) MONTEIRO, Márcia Joana Souza; BARBOSA, Wagner Luiz Ramos; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1372405563294070
This work aims at the proposal to contribute for the environmental management of Environmental Protection Area Algodoal-Maiandeua, by cultural record and appreciation of the local knowledge. This consideration is in order to provide systematic information on the uses and knowledge of medicinal plants for inclusion in the management plan and encourage sustainable use of natural resources by emphasizing the importance of recognizing these practices, as well as in official inclusion of medicinal plants for health care the local population and in the same direction for suggesting Policy of Medicinal Plants and Herbal Medicines (PNPMF) in such place. So, data collection focused qualitative methodology, because the quest for knowledge about man and his life was thus adopted a methodology informed by a theory about the very nature of man. Data collection emphasizes the qualitative methodology because the pursuit of knowledge about man and his life to take into account a certain methodology consistent with its nature. Moreover, several methods are adopted, with emphasis on observation and interview, the latter aiming to combine a degree of quantification from observation. As a tool was used semi-structured forms, applied by the Community Health Agents (CHA), activity implemented after training on ethnopharmacy and involving the active participation of communities. Literature searches were also performed in order to obtain the medicinal species already cataloged in previous surveys. The survey was conducted involving the four villages that form the APA Algodoal-Maiandeua (Algodoal, Camboinha, Fortalezinha and Mocooca). The answers lead to the achievement of objectives, providing information on medicinal plants and local knowledge related with them, and offering contributions regarding the management of conservation units for sustainable use.

Dung beetles in a Caatinga natural reserve: a threatened Brazilian dry-forest with high biological value
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2017-12) VIEIRA, Letícia; SILVA, Fernando Augusto Barbosa; LOUZADA, Júlio Neil Cassa
The Caatinga is an endemic and threatened dry-forest biome distributed across northern Brazil. We evaluated the conservation value of a Caatinga Natural Reserve (NR) - Floresta Nacional (FLONA) Contendas do Sincorá - using Scarabaeinae dung beetles as a biodiversity indicator. Specifically, we contrasted two zones impacted by two distinct intensity of selective logging that happened inside the NR until 1997. Dung beetles were collected 14 years after logging, using baited pitfall traps within three main habitats (riparian forest, regenerating Caatinga or arboreal Caatinga) found in two zones (Preservation and Management Zones). A total of 1,214 individuals from 21 species were sampled. The two zones presented distinct species composition, although the habitats did not exhibit such differences. Our results indicated that the secondary areas are in a conservation status similar to arboreal Caatinga and riparian forest, 14 y after logging. Furthermore, we identified seven habitat-indicator species, two of them typical to Caatinga biome, highlighting the importance of updates in NR management plan considering the Scarabaeinae regional diversity management.

In recent decades, the Amazon region has been drawing attention for its biodiversity potential and for the presence of traditional populations that use natural resources with a low impact on the ecosystem. Because of the importance of biodiversity, the rise in deforestation, and the encroachment on public lands (including "land-grabbing"), the government supported by NGOs, has proposed the creation of conservation units in large blocks. A study on the process of creating the Extractive Reserve of Rio Xingu, in Altamira, Pará is addressing the occupation of the Xingu River basin, colonization, the presence of indigenous peoples, "land grabbing" of public lands, and the description of non-governmental and governmental work for the creation of extractive reserves and protected territories for the traditional population. Conflicts between the government and the riparian (traditional river-dwelling) communities arise because the governmentadjudicates protected areas that are used by riparian communities for their livelihoods . The results of the research indicate that there is a need to generate knowledge and a constant dialogue with local communities before proposing an ecological intervention. The study also shows that ecological intervention reduces land grabbing, deforestation and violence against local communities. Lastly, the study proposes the creation of a mechanism to protect territories where there is a presence of traditional populations, which guarantees the population the use of natural resources for an indefinite period until the government designates the land for a particular use. The studies were conducted in a Masters Program in Family Farming and Sustainable Development at the Amazon Center for Agrarian Sciences and Rural Development at the Federal University of Pará.
