The study was carried out at the Eastern Amazon Research Center of Embrapa, in Belem, Para State, Brazil (1º28'S 48º27'W of Greenwich), with the objective of evaluate the influence of the addition of the palm kernel cake (Elaeis guineensis) as alternative feed supplementation of ruminants, in the critical periods of forage production of in the Amazon Eastern. The nutritional characteristics of palm kernel cake was determined during twenty one days, using sixteen sheep, in individual metabolic cage, distributed in a completely randomized experimental design, with four treatments and four replications. The experimental rations (T1, T2, T3 and T4) contained Brachiaria humidicola and palm kernel cake, at four levels (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%). The consumption of dry matter (g/day) and % of live weight were 666.6 and 2.5; 686.9 and 2.4; 649.4 and 2.4; e 540.9 and 2.0, of organic matter 706.5; 710.8; 708.1 and 632.3 g/day, and of crude protein 37.3; 42.9; 58.7 and 56.4 g/day. The fiber in neutral detergent consumption in g/day, were 584.7; 583.5; 565.2 and 527.0. The coefficients of digestibility were 50.3; 47.8; 52.3; and 55.2%, in dry matter basis, and 50.8; 49.6; 53.5; and 56.3%, in organic matter basis, and the crude protein contents were 48.0; 38.7; 66.8; 69.4%, in T1, T2, T3 and T4, respectively. The palm kernel cake shows good feeding potential, with high dry matter and good nutritional value, being considered as an alternative for feeding supplementation for ruminants, mainly at the level of 30%, and allows greater consumption and digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, with adequate supplement of energy.

The productive chain of ruminant in northern Brazil has its base sustained by forages being its management and fertilization, grasses perpetuity, extremely important for the high biological value protein final production for human intake. The study aimed to evaluate trades of Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça fertilized with increasing doses of nitrogen at Af weather conditions being this condition classified by frequent rainfall along every month of the year, so, showing no seasonality in rain scheme. There were evaluate productive trades, morphogenetic, structural and chemical of Mombaça grass in parcels. Being the experiment outlined in random blocks with six treatments (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 e 50 kg of N ha-1 aplication-1), each application performed after each cut and four repetitions, a repetition by block totalizing 24 plots and the cut done at a height of 40 cm, whenever the parcels high achieved 90 cm to be considered the time when the canopy intercepts 95% of incident light. The data were submitted to variance and regression analysis, with significance of 5% taken from the linear and quadratic coefficients of determination. Nitrogen fertilization affected (p<0,05) stretching rates, appearance, number of leaves alive by tillers and dry mass production. The forage quality was also affected by N doses (p<0,05), being the levels of CP positively affected and values of TC negatively. The fiber levels and lignin were not influenced by fertilization (p<0,05) being this result positive from the forage nutritional pint of view, once fiber and lignin high levels do not benefit consumption and cause a digestive limitation. The nitrogen provides better qualitative and quantitative results to Mombaça grass in tropical climate areas.

The fermentation kinetics and effective degradability (ED) brazil’s nut (Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl.) - (BN) were evaluated in the proportions 0 (control), 15, 30, 45, 60 and 100% dry matter in substitution of corn silage (CS) by in vitro gas production in the times 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. The experimental design for the gas production was in randomized blocks with six treatments, three blocks and two repetitions per block. To estimate of ruminal kinetics fermentation parameters of each treatment, the model of France et al. (1993) was fitted to the data. In in vivo experiment, we evaluated the ruminal parameters of sheep fed 0, 15, 30 and 45% (MS) TAC, and corn silage. The rumen fluid collections to determine the concentration of SCFA, pH and N-NH3 were held at 08h00, before the diet supply, and at 10h00, 12h00, 14h00, 16h00 and 18h00, post-prandial. The design was completely randomized with repeated measures, with four treatments and three replications. The variables results: acetate, propionate, butyrate, acetate: propionate ratio, pH and NH3 were subjected to analysis of variance and regression (linear and quadratic) considering treatment time and the interaction of both. We used the F test, with significance level of 5% (P<0.05). The standard kinetic fermentation and ED was declining linear (P<0.05), reducing total gas production at each level of coproduct addition. There was no significant interaction between treatment vs time for all SCFA variables (P>0.40), acetic acid (P>0.41), propionic (P>0.85), butyric acid (P>0.62) and pH (P>0.57). There was also effect on the total concentration of SCFA (P>0.75) nor in acetic acid (P>0.07) among the treatments. The concentration of propionic and butyric acids mMol/100ml of ruminal fluid reduced (P<0.001) (p<0.022) with the addition of 45% DM TAC. The highest concentrations in the measurement times were observed 4 hours after feeding. The pH values showed a quadratic effect both inclusion (P<0.001) and time (P<0.001). There was interaction (P <0.001) between treatment vs time NH3-N (mg/ml) concentration and the ratio of acetic: propionic acid (P<0.014). It is recommended the use of the TAC, at levels equal to or less than 30%, combined with different carbohydrate sources.

The objective of the experiment was to demonstrate the bromatological composition, and evaluate the fermentation kinetics and effective ruminal degradability in vitro, using the "Hohenheim Gas Test" technique, of babassu mesocarp flour I® and II® (FMBI and FMBII) and of feeds at different levels of inclusion. Two trials were carried out: one of pure byproducts and corn, and another of feeds with inclusions of FMBI and FMBII in the following proportions: 0, 7.5, 15.0 and 22.5% of the total dry matter. The experimental design was of randomized blocks, with six blocks in the first trial and five in the second. Measurement times for the gases produced were 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. The FMBI and FMBII flours showed different bromatological composition for the fibre components (FDN, FDA and Lignin). The FMBI and FMBII flours also showed patterns for fermentation kinetics inferior to the fermentation patterns of corn grain. Increasing the ratio of FMBI and FMBII in the feed reduces gas production for time of incubation. In view of the above, it can be said that mesocarp flours I and II, despite being sources of starch, did not present ruminal fermentation similar to corn grain, the standard source of starch.

Conditioned food aversion to Ipomoea carnea var. fistulosa induced by Baccharis coridifolia in goats
(2013-08) ADRIEN DELGADO, María de Lourdes; CORREA, Gabriela Riet; OLIVEIRA JÚNIOR, Carlos Alberto de; PFISTER, James A.; COOK, Daniel; SOUZA, Elda Ely Gomes de; CORREA, Franklin Riet; SCHILD, Ana Lucia
Baccharis coridifolia is a plant that induces strong conditioned food aversion in ruminants. This research aimed to induce a conditioned food aversion to Ipomoea carnea var. fistulosa in goats, using B. coridifolia as an aversive agent, and to compare the aversion induced by this plant with the aversion induced by lithium chloride (LiCl). Thirteen goats were allotted into two groups: Group 1 with six goats was averted with 175mg/kg of body weight of LiCl and Group 2 with seven goats was averted with 0,25g/kg of bw of dried B. coridifolia. All goats were averted on day 1 after the ingestion of I. carnea. The aversion procedure with LiCl or B. coridifolia in goats from Groups 1 and 2, respectively, was repeated in those goats that again consumed the plant during tests on days 2, 3, and 7. The goats of both groups were challenged in pens on 23 and 38 days after the last day of aversion and challenged in the pasture on days 11, 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 27 and 29 after the last day of aversion. After this period goats were challenged every 15 days on pasture until the 330º day after the last day of aversion (7th day). Two goats from Group 1 ingested I. carnea on the first day of the pasture challenge, 4 days after the last day of aversive conditioning in the pen. In addition, another goat in Group 1 started to consume the plant on day 18, and other two goats ate it on day 20. One goat in Group 1 that had never eaten I. carnea died on day 155. One goat from Group 2 started to ingest I. carnea on the first day of the pasture challenge, and a second goat started to consume this plant on day 182. At the end of the experiment, on day 330, the other five goats averted with B. coridifolia remained averted. These results suggest that B. coridifolia or an active compound from the plant could be used to induce aversion to toxic plants. Using B. coridifolia would be cheaper and, particularly in flocks with large number of animals, possibly easier than using LiCl, which requires the use of oral gavage and qualified personnel for its implementation.

This work was realized through in the Embrapa Amazon Eastern, in Belem, Para State, Brazil (1º28´S 48º27´W de Greenwich) to evaluate the effect of four levels (0%, 15%, 30% and 45%) of concentrate, with by-products of the regional agroindustry, in substitution to the ensilage of sorghum, in the voluntary consumption and apparent digestibility of the dry matter, crude protein, crude energy, fiber in neutral detergent and fiber in acid detergent. A metabolic test was realized in fourteen days of adaptation and seven days of experimental period, using sixteen ovines, of five months and 23 kg of live weight, in a completely randomized experimental design, with four treatments and four repetitions. The data was analyze by software SAS. The concentrated inclusion of in the diet influenced the voluntary consumption and the apparent digestibility of all nutrients, being described for quadratic function. One evidenced a quadratic increase in the apparent consumption’s of the dry matter and organic matter. However, had been observed, with increase of the concentrated level of in the ration, significant reductions in contents of fiber in neutral detergent and fiber in acid detergent. The concentrated percentage of 30% to 45% of in the diet ration to better consumption’s and digestibility of the nutrients, except of fiber in neutral detergent and fiber in acid detergent. The concentrated use in the ensilage of sorghum, provides to better availability of dry matter in the fodder plant and rise of the nutritional value of the ration, is capable to promote increase of the animal productivity.

We assessed the pie murumuru (Astrocaryum murumuru var. murumuru, Mart.), from processing kernels after oil extraction by the cosmetic industry, the effects of the substitution levels of 0%, 10%, 20%, 40% and 60% in the basic diet of Mombaça grass (Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça) on intake and digestibility of dry matter (CDDM), organic matter (CDOM), ether extract (CDEE), crude protein (CDCP), fiber neutral detergent (CDFND), fiber acid detergent (CDFDA), cellulose (CDCEL) and hemicellulose (CDHCEL) and nitrogen balance. Metabolism trial was conducted with 20 castrated sheep, live weight of 24 kg, distributed in five treatments and four replications in a completely randomized design. Adaptation period was 21 days with five days of data collection of diet and refusals, feces and urine. The CMS, CMO, EEC, CCP, FND, CFDA, CHCEL, CLIG showed a quadratic effect as a function of the substitution with pie in the diet. The CDDM, and CDCP CDMO showed no significant effects. The CDEE with optimal replacement level 56,64% and 88,62% maximum digestibility, CDFND with optimal replacement level 42,45% and 68,25% maximum digestibility, CDFDA with optimal replacement level of 31,63% and maximum digestibility of 66,80%, CDCEL with optimal replacement level 27,45% and 72,21% maximum digestibility showed a quadratic effect due to substitution murumuru pie. Nitrogen balance had no significant effect of inclusion in the grass of 0% to 60% of pie. It is concluded that the pie murumuru (Astrocaryum murumuru var.Murumuru Mart.), Has as its main limitation is the low dietary intake and digestibility, in addition to impossibility of its use as a concentrate exclusively on the diet of sheep showing up as an alternative food for up to 20% replacement in diets.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of incorporation of palm oil on serum lipid levels and sperm quality of buffalo bulls, since research about palm oil seed for reproductive purposes are scarce. The study was conducted at Embrapa Eastern Amazon, and used 12 pre-selected buffalo bulls, with a mean age of 3.47 ± 0.92 years and weight of 456.8 ± 50.4 kg. The bulls were fed and divided into two groups according to diet received. Diets were isoproteic (cracked corn, wheat bran and corn silage; proportion roughage / concentrate 50%) and were offered in collective pens. Animals of CONT Group (n = 5) received a control diet and OIL Group (n = 7) received the same diet with addition of 2% of palm oil on the DM. Analyses were performed using chemical and fatty acid profile of foods. Serum lipid profile, physical and morphological features of raw semen were investigated, including the relations between them. Statistical analysis included analysis of variance (ANOVA), comparison of means by Tukey test and Pearson correlations (P <0.05). Increased lipid consumption was noted related to saturated fat acids (71.23%) and unsaturated fat acids (55.40%) in OIL Group. Significant effects for serum parameters were observed for triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL and total lipids, with higher values for the OIL Group, and significant effects over time for cholesterol, LDL, VLDL and total lipids (P <0.05). Regarding to semen parameters, there was a significant reduction in gross motility and integrity of plasmatic membrane, and reduced seminal concentration on the period for the OIL Group. There was significant correlation between the variables: triglycerides and minor defects (r = -0412, P = 0.006), LDL and total defects (r = -0.333, P = 0.030), VLDL and viability (r = 0.381, P = 0.012), total lipids and minor defects (r = -0366, P = 0.017), and total lipids and total defects (r = -0.309, P = 0.046). Although an observed relationship between higher levels of serum lipids and better sperm morphology, and no reduction of fresh semen quality by palm oil addition below the physiological levels, the use of 2% of palm oil in the diet did not improve effectively the parameters related to semen quality and bulls fertility.

This study aimed at searching for the occurrence and frequency levels of the antibodies anti- Brucella abortus, Toxoplasma gondii and the Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis Virus (CAEV) in caprine from 14 distinct production units within the states of Pará and Maranhão. In the state of Pará, animals from the municipalities of Benevides, Castanhal, Santa Izabel do Pará and Moju have been analyzed, whereas in the state of Maranhão the study covered the municipality of Chapadinha. The serological tests accomplished with the purpose of diagnosing brucellosis disease were, the Buffered Acidified Plate Antigen test (BAPA), employed as triage test, and the 2-Mercaptoetanol (2-Me), as confirmatory test. For the toxoplasmosis analysis the Indirect Immunofluorescence Reaction (IIFR) and for CAEV the Agarose Gel Immunodiffusion (AGID) have been used respectively. The result of the brucellosis analysis has shown negativity in 100,0% of the studied samples. For toxoplasmosis and CAEV the respective incidences were 23,5% (97/412) and 21,6% (85/393). Statistical differences were observed in the relationship between anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies and the age of the caprines, showing that animals over 24-month old have undergone more risks of being infected when compared to animals at early ages OR=2,15 (IC95% 1,19 – 3,88). On the other hand, the risk factors found for CAEV were: lack of knowledge about the disease OR=6,45 (IC95% 2,88-14,47); the use of non - disposable materials, OR=10,85 (IC95% 4,85-24,28); the free-range farming system OR=10,85 (IC95% 4,85-24,28), the semi-extensive farming system OR=3,71 (IC95% 1,64-8,35) and handling procedures OR=11,4 (IC95% 5,51-23,60). It has been concluded that the caprine production units from Pará and Maranhão showed positive results for the studied diseases in their livestock.

From 2007 to 2009 a nephrotoxic disease of subacute course and high mortality in goats occurred on a farm in the county of Itaguaí, Rio de Janeiro. Metternichia princeps, a plant of the Solanaceae family, was suspected to be the cause. Through experiments in goats the clinical-pathological picture of poisoning by the plant and the lethal dose were established. For the experiments 12 young and adult goats of different races, both sexes and with weights above 15 kg were used. The goats that received 30g/kg in 5 days, 15g/kg in 3 days, single doses of 10g/kg and 5g/kg, all died. Of two goats that received single doses of 2.5g/kg, one died but the other did not show any clinical sign; a goat that received the single dose of 1.25g/kg also did not show any symptom of poisoning. First clinical signs were observed from 7 hours to 46h45min after the plant intake. The clinical course varied from 3h6min to 126h40min. First clinical signs were loss of appetite, adipsia, apathy and reluctance to move. After the animals entered in sternal decubitus and when they were placed in standing position, they kept their front limbs flexed, supported only by the posterior limbs on the floor until evolving into flexion of all four limbs followed by lateral decubitus. Postmortem examination revealed edema of the perirenal adipose tissue, pale kidneys which on the cut-surface showed whitish stripes from the cortex to the medullar area. At histopathology, severe coagulative necrosis of epithelial cells of the kidney tubules was seen. Compared with the natural cases, the goats experimentally poisoned by M. princeps, presented a similar clinic-pathological picture. By these experiments it could be proved that Metternichia princeps is the toxic plant that causes a nephrotoxic disease in goats in the Rio de Janeiro area; the minor lethal dose was 2,5g/kg in the experiments.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-06-30) DUARTE, Marcos Dutra; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557
This paper reports the first outbreaks of salt poisoning in sheep and goats in Brazil on a farm in the state of Pará. The evaluation of the facilities and the handling indicates as predisposing factors the excessive intake of mineral mixture and water restriction. The first outbreak occurred in sheep, eight animals (1,46%) were affected from a total of 545 animals and four (50%) of them died. The second and third outbreaks occurred in a herd of 191 goats. In the second outbreak, four animals (2,09) were affected and none died. In the third outbreak, eight goats (4,19%) were affected and two (25%) of them died. In sheep the main clinical signs were recumbency, decrease or absence of cutaneous sensibility, absence of auricular, palpebral and menace reflexes, mydriasis, nystagmus, opisthotonus, spasticity of limbs, somnolence and stupor. Beside this signs observed there were bloat, diarrhea, tachypnea, tachycardia, dehydration and polyuria. The clinical course of the disease in sheep that died ranged from 2 and a half hours to 48 hours. The main clinical signs in the goats were muscle weakness, abnormal posture of the head and neck such us staying with his head down, head and neck rotation, neck extension and lateral deviation of the neck, sternal and lateral recumbency, mydriasis, absence of pupillary reflex to light, stay with pelvic and thoracic limbs abduced or in broad-based, increased flexor reflex, polyuria and intense thirst were observed. They were observed also rumen hypomotility, tachycardia, decreased skin turgor. The clinical course in goats of second outbreak varied from 4 to 24 hours. In the goats of third outbreak who died the evolution ranged by six to eight hours and two to three days in the goats who have recovered. The medium of serum concentration of sodium and potassium of 31 sheep from the same group affected on samples collected during the outbreak revealed hypernatremia (190 mEq/l) and hyperkalemia (8.2 mEq/l), respectively. The mean serum concentrations of sodium and potassium of 36 goats from the same lot of animals affected in the second outbreak in samples taken two days before the onset of clinical signs revealed hypernatremia (167 mEq/l) and the average level of potassium (4.7 mEq/l) within the reference values for the species. The averages of these same parameters in samples from goats in the third outbreak with clinical signs of intoxication (143,7 mEq/l for sodium and 3.9 mEq/l for potassium) were within the reference values. However, the averages of these same parameters in samples of goats in the third outbreak, with clinical signs of intoxication (143.7 mEq/l for sodium and 3.9 mEq/l for potassium), were within the reference values. At necropsy in only one of four sheep there was flattening of the cerebral gyri. Microscopically in this sheep there was a vacuolization of the neuropil in the cerebral cortex with moderate intensity in the intermediary surface and mild on the superficial, with increased of perineural and perivascular spaces. In these areas there was still markedly swollen nucleus of astrocytes and acute neuronal necrosis. Noteworthy macroscopic or microscopic changes were not observed in the goats. The dosages of sodium showed high values in the brain of the poisoning animals, in an ovine value of 3,513 ppm and in two goats, values of 3,703 and 3,675 ppm. Five goats of the third outbreak were treated with dexamethasone and thiamine, intramuscularly, twice daily for two days, and water was offered in small amounts three times a day. All treated animals were recovered in three days. The diagnosis of salt poisoning was based on epidemiology, clinical signs, in the lesions, in the dosages of sodium in serum and brain and in the response to treatment in five goats.

(2005-12) BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; OLIVEIRA, Carlos Magno Chaves; DUARTE, Marcos Dutra; PEIXOTO, Paulo Fernando de Vargas; TOKARNIA, Carlos Maria Antônio Hubinger
Ipomoea asarifolia R. et Schult. is a plant responsible for occasional outbreaks of poisoning in cattle, sheep and goats. Its oral administration to cattle and buffalos showed that the buffalo is as susceptible as cattle. One to 4 daily doses of 10-20g/kg caused similar symptoms in both species, as incoordination, muscular twiching and swaying of the head and anterior part of the body (pendular movement). In buffaloes the signs of incoordination were observed to a smaller extent. There is no report yet on natural poisoning by I. asarifolia in buffaloes, possibly because cases are not being noticed.

(2012-11) RAIOL, Laura Cristina Barra; KUSS, Fernando; SILVA, André Guimarães Maciel e; SOARES, Bruno Cabral; SOUZA, Karla Débora Santana de; COLODO, Juliana Cristina Nogueira; LOURENÇO JÚNIOR, José de Brito; ÁVILA, Sandra Cristina de
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of inclusion of lipid residue of biodiesel originated in the processing of palm oil (Elaeis guineensis) in the diet on the digestibility of feedlot lambs. Twenty-five crossbred male castrated lambs, weighing 20±1.61 kg, were distributed in randomized blocks with five treatments and five replications. The experimental period lasted 22 days; 15 for diet adaptation, 2 for the adaptation to the indicator LIPE (lignin from Eucalyptus grandis isolated, purified and enriched, UFMG, Minas Gerais) and 5 for fecal sampling. Diets were formulated with 64% concentrate based on corn and soybean meal, 31% Massai grass (Panicum maximum cv. Massai) hay and 5% lipid supplementation from increasing levels of substitution of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of palm oil for biodiesel oil from palm residue. The lambs were offered two meals a day, at 7h00 and 16h00. There was linear effect of inclusion of the residue from palm oil biodiesel on dry matter intake. There was no change in digestibility of nutrients except for ether extract. The use of biodiesel from palm oil residue up to 100% replacement for the lipid supplementation of sheep positively influences the consumption without altering the digestibility of nutrients.

Bovine Leukosis, Bovine Viral Diarrhea and Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis are among the main viruses that lead to losses in productivity and reproductive performance of ruminants. Although cattle and buffalo are often created together, and despite the proven occurrence of these diseases in buffalo, papers about natural occurrence of these infections in this species are scarce. Thus, the objective of this study was to verify the occurrence of antibodies against the Bovine Leukosis Virus (BLV), Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) and Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) in buffalo creations located in the “Paraense” Northeast Mesoregion, Greater Metropolitan Belém and Marajó Mesoregion, Pará, in addition to identify the risk factors for BVD in creations located in “Paraense” Northeast Mesoregion and Greater Metropolitan Belém. In this study 350 buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) sera were evaluated, coming from farms located in each mesoregion, that were subjected to serological techniques: immunodiffusion for (BLV) and serum neutralizing for BVD and IBR. Frequency of the respective diseases in the study population were: 0% (0/350), 53,71% (188/350) and 91,71% (321/350). Male buffaloes and older animals had higher seropositivity for BVD. The frequency of BVD seroreagents buffaloes was higher in Marajó Mesoregion compared to “Paraense” Northeast Mesoregion and Greater Metropolitan Belém, whereas for IBR the opposite occurred. Among the variables investigated, the type of milking was the only identified as a risk factor for the occurrence of BVD in buffaloes.
