Antioxidant capacity and biological activity of essential oil and methanol extract of Hyptis crenata Pohl ex Benth
(2009-03) REBELO, Monaliza Maia; SILVA, Joyce Kelly do Rosário da; ANDRADE, Eloisa Helena de Aguiar; MAIA, José Guilherme Soares
The essential oils of fresh and dried leaves and fine stems of Hyptis crenata furnished the following yields: 1.4% and 0.9%. The main volatile constituents were α-pinene (22.0%; 19.5%), 1,8-cineole (17.6%; 23.2%), β-pinene (17.0%; 13.8%), camphor (4.7%; 11.6%), limonene (5.4%; 4.4%) and γ-terpinene (3.5%; 2.4%), totalizing more than 70% in the oils. The DPPH radical scavenging activity (EC50, 16.7 + 0.4 µg/mL) of the methanol extract was comparable to BHT (19.8 ± 0.5 µg/mL) showing a significant antioxidant activity. The oils showed low activities. The amount of total phenolics (TP, 373.0 + 15.9 mg GAE/g) and trolox equivalent (TEAC, 226.8 + 0.5 mg TE/g) confirmed the antioxidant activity of the methanol extract that can be attributed to the presence of polar phenolic compounds. In the brine shrimp bioassay the lethal concentrations (LC50) for the oil and methanol extract were 6.7 + 0.2 µg/mL and 13.0 + 3.7 µg/mL, respectively, providing important evidence of their biological activities.

Before 1988, the demands of Black rural communities were diluted in the agenda of social struggles of wider categories such as rural workers. With the promulgation of the Constitution, the emergence of the term “remaining Quilombo communities” gave rise to a specific set of demands.  In this scenario, the role of social scientists in the production of expert reports and academic works became a central aspect in the discussion of perceptions about the term “Quilombo”. Taking this into consideration, we analyze the experience of researchers from the New Social Cartography of the Amazon project (PNCSA, in portuguese) and their social relations with Salvaterra’s Quilombo communities, Marajó Island, Pará, who participated in workshops for the production of maps which resulted in a booklet entitled Quilombolas da Ilha de Marajó: Pará. We aimed at investigating, based on data collection and field research, how the relations between the cartography actors became political tools in the struggle for the latter’s social-territorial rights and their political organizing following the social cartography process. We point out that the social relations between the PNCSA and the Quilombo communities are characterized, on the one hand, as means for questioning the historical forms of disrespect and injustice and as mechanisms of politicizing the Quilombo social movement. On the other hand, as affirmation and academic consolidation of the Project’s research practice.

Dirofilariose canina em dois municípios da Ilha do Marajó, Estado do Pará, Brasil: um enfoque epidemiológico, morfológico e molecular
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009-04-03) FURTADO, Adriano Penha; LANFREDI, Reinalda Marisa; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5488452069004649
Filarids are elongate and filiforms nematodes parasites. Canids filarids parasites belong to the Onchocercidae Family and are represented mainly by Genus Acanthocheilonema, Dipetalonema and Dirofilaria. These filarids develop in different places in the vertebrate host, and need for haematophagus invertebrate host to complete your cycle. Different infection levels can occur, since assintomatic, until the death of dog. The filarids parasites of dogs are found mainly in the region between the tropics. In the Amazon region a little is known about the distribution of these parasites, and until this moment, a study of distinguishing diagnosis was not performed. With this objective, we choose two cities in the Marajó Island (Salvaterra and São Sebastião da Boa Vista) and carry through a epidemiologic, morphologic and molecular studies. The percentage of microfilaremics dogs was of 37.34% in Salvaterra and 6.67% in São Sebastião da Boa Vista, resulting in a total prevalence of 32.45%. Analyzing the morphologic characteristics of the collected adult filarids, we concluded that these worms are of the Dirofilaria immitis species. For analysis of genic region, we conclude that the microfilariaes found in the dogs blood studied are also D. immitis species, and that these dogs had not presented mixing infection.

A pilot area of 200 Km2 in Salvaterra county along the east edge of Marajo island was selected to make a study of groundwater using electrical resistivity methods. Sixty-five Schlumberger vertical electric soundings and six horizontal Wenner resistivity profiles were made. The sounding data were first interpreted individually with the auxiliary point method, and later reinterpreted in groups using an iterative curve-calculating routine. The results show the range of resistivities in this area vary between 5 and 40000 ohm-m. The aquifer appears to be defined by a sequence of layers with resistivities between 500 and 4000 ohm-m. In this pilot area three favorable sub-areas were delimited, covering about 40% of the area, where the interpreted aquifer thickness is in excess of 20 m and sometimes as great as 80 m. The depht to the top of this aquifer zone varies between 1.3 and 6.6 m in the three sub-areas. The geophysical interpretations were verified by four shallow drill holes (to 20 m). Two of these, located within the favorable sub-areas, showed dominantly sand sediments and the other two, drilled outside the favorable areas, showed much more clay and organic material, but limited amounts of fine sand. Analyses of water samples from many existing wells and of the new drill holes show that, in general, there are no problems with the quality of these shallow groundwaters. The only exceptions are several wells withing 100 m of Marajo Bay which show considerable increases in salinity during the height of the dry season, when the Bay waters also have maximum salinity. The ages and origin of the long oval belts of sand are not known with certaint, but they could be channel sands deposited by an ancient river or distributary of this deltaic region. The results of this research have outlined three large zones of good groundwater potential which will be very important for the agricultural and industrial development of this region.

O extrativismo de mangaba é “trabalho de mulher”?: duas situações empíricas no Nordeste e Norte do Brasil
(2008-12) MOTA, Dalva Maria da; SCHMITZ, Heribert; SILVA JÚNIOR, Josué Francisco da; RODRIGUES, Raquel Fernandes de Araújo; ALVES, Jackeline Nakata F.
Despite recent academic investments, the work of the women is not very well known yet, as the insistent initiatives of emphasizing its importance for their lives prove to be, so they become more visible and valued. This little knowledge agrees with the fact that the habitual categories of economical and social analysis, for a long time, either omitted or denied female activities, or associated them exclusively to a particular universe called “the works of the women”, marked by a large number stereotypes which escamoteiam socially acquired capacities. The aim of this article is to analyze the social construction of the notion of “work of women” from the refl ection of the two empirical situations of the Extractivism of mangaba practiced, predominantly, by the women of the North and Northeast of Brazil. The research was made in 2007, in the towns of Indiaroba/SE (Village of Pontal) and in Salvaterra/PA (Marajó Island). Besides the distance and the social-cultural particularities, there is still the idea that the extractivism of mangaba is “work of women”. What are the meanings attributed to this expression in so different contexts?

Hepatic steatosis associated with microsporidiosis in teleost fishes from Marajó Island, Brazil
(2014-09) VIDEIRA, Marcela Nunes; SILVA, Michele Velasco Oliveira da; MATOS, Patrícia Santos; SÃO CLEMENTE, Sérgio Carmona de; SANCHES, Osimar de Carvalho; SANTOS, Patrícia de Fátima Saco dos; MATOS, Edilson Rodrigues
A total of 40 specimens of the teleost fish Gobioides grahamae Palmer & Wheeler, 1955 were obtained from the municipality of Salvaterra on Marajó Island in the Brazilian state of Pará. Their livers were removed and processed for light microscopy. Overall, 90% of the specimens presented some degree of steatosis of the liver, which was invariably associated with the presence of Microsporidium sp. The present study confirms the occurrence of steatosis in G. grahamae associated with parasitic infections by Microsporidium. The findings indicate that the condition of otherwise healthy fishes in their natural environment may be affected negatively by parasites.

The present study verified the quality of groundwater in the city of Salvaterra located in the island of Marajó-Pará. The registration of 20 wells (18 tubular and 2 amazons) was carried out in five neighborhoods of the region (Caju, Centro, Paes de Carvalho, Marabá and Coqueirinho) In order to present results about the hydrogeological characteristics, physicochemical and microbiological analyzes, the samples were collected in two seasonal periods, being in the months of April (rainy period) and November (less rainy period). The main objective of this research was to outline an overview of the groundwater situation of the 20 registered wells used by the population of Salvaterra. The hydrogeological characterization of the study area was based on the descriptive analysis of four wells with 80 meters of depth of COSANPA. The results obtained were a lithologic composite profile, a composite lithologic section, a three dimensional model of hydroestratigraphy, a section composed of the geometric aspects of aquifers, two static level diagrams and two three dimensional models of seasonality. To determine the groundwater quality, the following parameters were analyzed: temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, total hardness, alkalinity, ammonia, nitrate, chloride, iron, fecal coliforms and total coliforms. For the analysis of the COSANPA water treatment system, free chlorine was included. The results obtained were compared with the potability standards, according to Ministry of Health Ordinance nº 2.914. For the interpretation of the results, 12 charts of variation of values and 12 maps of isovalues and isoteores were elaborated in the seasonal periods. The pH was considered acid with maximum value of 5.9. The hardness presented soft, moderate and hard degrees in the CaCO3 composition of the groundwater. The chemical contaminations presented in the nitrate values reached 74% of the contaminated wells in the rainy season and the iron values with high concentrations in the COSANPA wells up to 3.5 mg/L. The microbiological contaminations were manifested by the presence of fecal coliforms (Escherichia coli) and total coliforms. During the rainy season, the presence of Escherichia coli was detected in 63% of the wells studied and 89% in total coliforms. In the less rainy period, Escherichia coli and total coliforms were present in 21% and 47% of the wells respectively. The results of these analyzes confirm a higher degree of contamination of nitrate, and of fecal and total coliforms of these groundwater, prevailing in greater amounts of the rainy season.

To treat Education of Young persons and Adults in the field is to reveal tensions and contradictions of the education context turned to the young persons and adults of the field in so far as these subjects are invisibilizados in the education process in which they are inserted. The finality of this inquiry is to analyse the trajectories of schooling of the subjects of the field when Education of Young persons and Adults was enroled in the kind in the school be of the local authority of Salvaterra, School of Secondary education Ademar Nunes of Vasconcelos, taking into account that such subjects are not contemplated in the right of having a school in the communities where they carry out his social, cultural and economical activities. In this sense, to reach the objective present we will take like point of análisea conception of Education of the Field expresses in the Operational Directives for the Basic Education of the Schools of the Field, when n. 1/2002 was established by the Resolution CNE/CEB, situating the formative process of these subjects, so much in school level how much in the social movements that form them with bigger representativeness in the process through his struggles. To notice the objective of the text, the proceedings metodológicos what will guide the insertion in field from a qualitative approach, based on interviews and systematic observations in the community of the “School Ademar Nunes of Vasconcelos”, being that to analyse the words of the subjects of the EJA, there will be adopted an analysis of contents of the interviews. The future perspectives of the present study point to the strengthening of the formative process of these educandos, just as to the incitement of the discussions of the problems of schooling survived by these pupils.
