With the growth of large urban centers in Brazil, the population density and the need for housing led to high demand for semi-detached homes and apartment houses with numerous apartments, however, with the passage of time they became the result of user complaints in consequence of the low performance of the buildings. The normalization of the performance of the buildings was necessary. Several international standards address the issue, but only in 2013 was published the Brazilian standard of buildings performance NBR 15575 (ABNT, 2013), stipulating among other things, requirements for acoustic performance of internal and external walls, and slabs about the noise impact and air. However, there are some questions, such as: does the current construction typology meet these performance acoustic criteria? Are these criteria suitable? Among to answer these questions, field tests and questionnaires were performed with residents. Among the seals whose acoustic performance is required, the results show the inner walls are more distant to meet these criteria, and the external meet with difficulty, even as perceived by users. About the regulatory requirements for acoustic performance, are significant the annoyed levels generated by impact loads on slabs, highlighting the low accuracy, and even more worrying that the latter is the fact in not require acoustic performance criteria regarding the impact noise between walls, highlighted by the vast majority of respondents as the main source of noise.

In Brazil, the number of houses and apartments that suffer the influence of noise pollution is quite large. Currently, this question gained important local attention when Belém-PA was elected the “National Capital of Noise” for several years in a row, according to data obtained by the IBGE. Among the most common types of noise pollution, the biggest complaint of society is regarding traffic noise, which is inherent to the daily life of any great city. While the traffic noise concerns increase, so does the preoccupation with a degree of discomfort from the population, justifying the development of means to quantify and reduce such discomfort beyond the means of regulations for this situation by Brazilian standards. Therefore, the condition of traffic noise, while a principal agent of annoyance for the population in which it refers to the noise pollution, it comes to justify the necessity to realize a study that aims at the development of elements of construction by means of new geometrics and composition of existing materials that minimize the penetration of traffic noise to the internal environments of these constructions. So, this work presents the results of studies of the acoustic behavior in situated constructions next to roads of great flow of vehicles which suffer interferences caused by the generation of traffic noise. So far, there were measures carried out in the field of a 25 story building in advanced stages of construction and was chosen as the subject for this study, which represents a numerical modeling of this building with the help of the software ODEON.

A large portion of the population that lives in urban centers has already suffered or is suffering from problems caused by urban noise, especially due to, among other factors, the proximity of roads of intense traffic of vehicles. Studies of several areas of knowledge are presenting possible harms caused to people as a consequence of a long exposure to high noise levels. Under this point of view, noise has become a social problem, implying the necessity to make its control to improve the quality of life for citizens. Lately, this control has been done mainly by private initiatives, through the internal ambient sound insulation. Regarding the external environment, few measures were taken. Studies about this reveal conflicts between the urban guidelines for the urban development, land use and occupation and the acoustic comfort. The main objective of this work is to study the interactions between urban noise (especially regarding traffic noise) and urban space configuration, using as experimental field an area of Marco neighborhood, in Belém-PA, near Almirante Barroso Avenue. For this, a methodology was created based on standards and theories that approach this theme and makes it possible to obtain built mass characteristic indexes (roughness, porosity, concentration and porosity). The comparison of these indexes with sound levels obtained through “in loco” collected data (using a sound pressure level meter), allow the identification of the urban form physical characteristics that influence external sound environment and that can serve as subsidies to the planning and design of the cities, preventing the formation of extremely unhealthy sound areas.
