This article aims to refl ect on the extractive reserves in the Coastal Zone of the State of Pará, Brazilian Amazon, with regard to their socioenvironmental characteristics and, at the same time, the meanings they represent for collective existence and access to territorial rights and development, in their essential and fundamental aspects, for existing traditional populations. Emphasis is given to aspects inherent to the territory, biodiversity resources and their relationship to the national policy of sustainable development of traditional peoples and communities.
