Acesso em:.https://repositorio.ufpa.br/handle/2011/17962The objective of this research was to investigate how access to basic education is being provided to residents of the islands south of Belém, with an emphasis on Combu Island and its five municipal educational units that serve early childhood education and elementary school, both in their initial and final cycles. The study used as a time marker the period during which tourism experienced increasing tourism development in the area, assessing whether this same period of development simultaneously provided any improvement in access to quality education for its residents, a premise described and observed by authors who point to tourism as an element that promotes transformation in communities. The methodology consisted of a quantitative and qualitative approach through analysis of the results from a systematic literature review, combined with data collection and observation conducted at the educational units on the southern islands. Two groups of services were investigated: the operational infrastructure provided for the implementation of educational initiatives and the actual results resulting from the implementation of these initiatives, from the perspective of two groups of participants: the first composed of professionals working in the schools and the second composed of parents or guardians of the students served by them. The results showed that despite the growth of tourism, there was no direct link that stimulated the development of local schools. Positive progress was observed in services such as school transportation and infrastructure.
