The systematic control of maintenance and operation of machinery and equipment is considered a high point for reducing costs and increasing operational readiness for strategic planning. As a result, it has been in service area, a large number of methods, software models and management tools available. Among them, two methods stand out: the RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance and Reliability Centered Maintenance) of U.S. origin, and TPM (Total Productive Maintenance and Total Productive Maintenance), of Japanese origin. Thus, the main objective of this work is the systematic study of strategic planning and planned maintenance to reduce failures and defects that occur in equipment from the proposed methodologies by leading authors in the area of strategic planning and maintenance, in order to propose improvements in the use of this tool. Based on the theoretical (Amendola, Berndt, Coimbra, Right, Coser, Nakajima, Mendes Moreira, Moubray, Oliveira, Kaplan and others) studied, could begin to understand the planning of the management of planned maintenance of the Tucuruí Hydroelectric Plant and their practices in relation to the performance practices of reference and key strategic indicators highlighted by these authors.
