Acesso em:.https://repositorio.ufpa.br/handle/2011/18893The poor disposal of chemical waste is an environmental and public health problem that affects Universities in Brazil, including the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). This study aimed to analyze chemical substance disposal methodologies at UFPA and suggest measures to improve the management of this waste. Data were obtained through interviews with employees responsible for chemical removal, document analysis, and on-site observations. The study revealed that UFPA produces considerable amounts of chemical waste, such as solvents, acids, bases, and heavy metals. Current disposal practices involve incineration, neutralization, and landfilling. However, these techniques are not always appropriate and can pose environmental and human health risks. The study presents proposals to improve chemical waste management at UFPA, such as establishing a complete chemical waste management system, investing in more sustainable waste management technologies, promoting awareness about chemical substances relevant to waste management, and creating recycling and reuse initiatives.
