Curso de Mestrado em Letras.https://repositorio.ufpa.br/handle/2011/4043This Dissertation is the result on investigation about the rising of the mid vowels /e/ and /o/ before stressed syllable in the Brazilian Portuguese language spoken in Belem city, capital of Pará, in north of Brazil. The sample of the investigated community is composed by 48 speakers stratified according to their ages, sex and level of school. The selected occurrences had the syllable patterns V, VC, CV, CVC, CCV e CCVC. In the final analysis 1.434 data were submitted to the program Varbrul: 776 of /e/ and its variants and 658 of /o/ and its variants. For the aims of this work, the analysis took as base ten groups of linguistic factors and three groups of social factors that possibly could explain the variation of vowels.
