Teachers often complain about difficulties and challenges they face to arouse students‟ interest related to writing activities. Moreover, we realize that students also complain about the treatment which is given to writing ability in the classroom, being uninterested and demotivated throughout the production of these activities. Therefore, this paper aims at discussing, reflecting and analyzing how this skill has been treated over the years and it proposes the genre-based approach in order to motivate and foster the autonomy of students majoring in Letras, English Language at the Universidade Federal do Pará, Campus Bragança.
