Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Caracterização do pescador e da frota pesqueira comercial de Manoel Urbano e Sena Madureira (AC) e Boca do Acre (AM)(2012-06) ALMEIDA, Oriana Trindade de; AMARAL, Lucilene Oliveira da Silva; RIVERO, Sérgio Luiz de Medeiros; SILVA, Christian Nunes daSeveral studies about the fi shing sector have been carried on in the Amazon, however, the majority of these studies are concentrated on regions near the Amazon river bank and its delta. This work has the objective to characterize the Purus commercial fishing fleet and the fisher in three counties: Manoel Urbano and Sena Madureira in the Brazilian state of Acre (AC) and Boca do Acre, in Amazonas (AM).We estimate the fisheries production and income. The results show that in Manoel Urbano (AC) lake fisheries predominate while in Sena Madureira (AC), the diversity in fishing places are lager with fishers using lakes, river and creeks. In Boca do Acre (AM), the largest among the three cities, the most important fishing plots are Pauini and Labrea areas. In relation to boats, Manoel Urbano fishers use only canoes with most of it motorized. In Boca do Acre, fi sheries are practiced mainly in boat. In relation to fishing trip costs the results showed that variable costs are the main costs for canoes (63% of total income) and boats (73% of total income). The analyses showed also that motorized canoes have larger productive capacity per unit of effort (CPUE) in relation to boats.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Estrutura, dinâmica e economia da pesca comercial do baixo Amazonas(Núcleo de Altos Estudos Amazônicos, 2009-12) ALMEIDA, Oriana Trindade de; RUFFINO, Mauro Luis; RIVERO, Sérgio Luiz de Medeiros; MCGRATH, David GibbsThe objective of this study is to characterize the fishermen and the fishing fleet of the Lower Amazon. The study is based on data collected from 3.144 boats operating out of the four main ports of Santarém. An economic analysis of the activities of these boats is based on fifty two interviews conducted specifi cally for that purpose. Results show that larger and smaller boats use essentially the same technology but significant differences exist in terms of fishing strategy. Smaller boats supply local markets, and their catches comprise a greater variety of fi sh species. Larger boats tend to specialize in a number of species of catfish, and generally supply fish processing plants. Smaller boats are less efficient in terms of CPUE (Kg/Fisherman/Day) but they are more economically efficient, earning more for each unit of money invested than larger boats. Most boats operating from Santarém have a storage capacity of less than 4t. This class size boat is thus an important source of food, income, and employment for Santarém and the surrounding region.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Financiamento internacional para o setor agroindustrial no Mato Grosso: uma oportunidade para conservação?(2008-06) STICKLER, Claudia; ALMEIDA, Oriana Trindade deOne of the major trends linked to the process of globalization is the expansion of agro-industry into the humid tropics. Although agro-industry is an important source of income for Brazil , it is also leading to the displacement of local populations and extensive clearing of native vegetation. In this context, we focus on a second trend resulting from globalization in which financial institutions have demonstrated increasing concern with environmental and social responsibility, notably through the inclusion of environmental and social conditions on loans to the agricultural sector. In this article, we assess the potential for this type of economic instrument to help reduce the negative impacts of agroindustrial expansion through the lens of two International Finance Corporation loans to Brazil ’s Grupo Maggi. We also examine how the different actors who are shaping this debate (non-governmental organizations, industries, the finance sector, government) can best help to realize this potential.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Inovações e pesquisa na indústria pesqueira na Amazônia(2007-12) ALMEIDA, Oriana Trindade de; RIVERO, Sérgio Luiz de Medeiros; ANDROCZEVECZ, Scheyla Regina; SANTOS, José Nazareno Araújo dosThe aim of the present study is to analyse the introduction of new species and new products into the market in order to help reduce pressure on the main species exploited. Thirty interviews were carried out at research institutes and fish processing plants. Among these, 12 were research institutions, six of which did research on new species and technological innovations in the fishery industry, and only two reported the results of their research adopted by the industrial sector. Among the 18 fishing processing plants where interviews were held, 12 had introduced new species and 12 had introduced new products in the last four years (more the one response per factory). Regarding the development and use of technology in the fish processing plants, the results demonstrate that both the institutions and processing plants play important roles, but have little articulation. It is important, however, that both work together towards the needs of the industry in an attempt to define lines of research with economically viable products from which the industry can benefit and improve its development.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A mão-de-obra da indústria pesqueira na Amazônia(2006) AMARAL, Lucilene Oliveira da Silva; ALMEIDA, Oriana Trindade de; RIVERO, Sérgio Luiz de MedeirosFishery is a very important sector in the Amazon area. Commercial and subsistence fishing activities account for the main job opportunities in the sector, and fishing industries are the greatest income generators for the local population. The fishing industry in Amazon, however, struggles with several difficulties regarding raw-material and training. The seasonality of the species affects the production systems of the companies, which, in their turn, must shift their staff according to the commercial species. Because of this dynamics, some fishing companies use a rotation system, hiring during the harvest season and firing during the period between harvests; other companies use a working load system, keeping a steady staff and making up for the extra working hours during harvest by granting non working hours during the period between harvests. In general, due to this seasonality, fishing companies staff are low qualified and have lower hygiene standards. Uncertainty in keeping jobs, on the other hand, does not motivate employees to training. Some companies policy include keeping a steady staff. Such companies waste less raw material and their employees are better trained and are adapted to higher hygiene standards. In order to maintain a steady staff, these companies must develop a broader fishing strategy during the period between harvests.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Pecuária e desmatamento: uma análise das principais causas diretas do desmatamento na Amazônia(2009-04) RIVERO, Sérgio Luiz de Medeiros; ALMEIDA, Oriana Trindade de; SILVA, Saulo Cristiano Ávila da; OLIVEIRA, Wesley Pereira deCattle Ranching is the main causes of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon region. This paper analyses the proximate causes of deforestation using linear regressions with panel data. The model evaluates the contribution of the main land uses for deforestation from 2000 to 2006. Deforestation data from INPE-PRODES, number of heads of cattle, and area of temporary and permanent crops from IBGE are the data used in the analysis (782 municipalities). The result of the regressions shows that deforestation is strongly associated with cattle ranching. Soybean plantations are also strongly related with deforestation in the model. This trend is reinforced by the growth in demand for meat in the domestic and international markets. To be effective in reducing deforestation rates, public policies must therefore act on the underlying causes of deforestation, reducing the forces that lead to its expansion on the area where deforestation is occurring.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A pequena produção e a exploração sustentável de madeira na Amazônia(2007-12) MERRY, Frank; ALMEIDA, Oriana Trindade de; LIMA, Erivelton; NEPSTAD, Daniel Curtis; AMACHER, Gregory; RAMOS, Cláudia de Barros e Azevedo; LEFEBVRE, Paul; RESQUE JÚNIOR, FelipeThis research estimate the potential and importance of the small holder for wood supply to the logging industry in the Transamazonic. Using satellite images, secondary and primary data the research showed the potential and the sustainability of the small production to supply the industry. Using a conservative estimate per hectare it was possible to estimate a area of 841,954 ha per year to exploit in the region which would be equivalent to the production of 10,000 families or 18% of the total estimated family in the region. This is equivalent to 1/25 of the actual estimate of production in the region. In general, the large potential of the small production are overlooked but when calculated for a large region it can show the potential for increase of income and forestry sustainability.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A valoração da pesca em águas continentais(Núcleo de Altos Estudos Amazônicos, 2010-07) ALMEIDA, Oriana Trindade de; BENE, Christophe; COWX, Ian Graham; BRUMMETT, Randall E.; BUSH, Simon R.; DARWALL, William R. T.; PITTOCK, Jamie; BRAKEL, Martin L. vanFishing has been, and will probably continue to be, an important source of food and income for society. The authors of this study show that the total economic value of fishing has not always been recognized. The total economic value (TEV) in rivers may be divided into direct use value and non-use value/preservation value. TEV is the sum of all value of use and non-use, regardless of their origins. The authors show that there is a great difficult in setting the total economic value, due to low valorization of fishing for the sector as a whole. The lack of progress in this field results from a weak dialogue between scientists, the authorities and experts in environmental and ecologic economics. The full importance of fishing may be approached from the populations’ point of view and their livelihood which depends on various natural resources. The integration of studies on fishing needs to be promoted to encourage the sustainable use of all aquatic resources, more specifically, to bring into the open the real importance of the fishing sector to society.
