Lugar e significado da gestão pombalina na economia colonial do Grão-Pará
    (2010-04) COSTA, Francisco de Assis
The historiography on the colonial period in the Amazon involves an opposition between reality shaped by a colonial agricultural project and the occurrence of concrete situations of extractive economies, depending on the availability of capital to be applied in the main means of production: the black slave. So, a long period of scarcity of resources would have conformed a cycle of the extractive economy in the region dominated by the "drogas do sertão", replaced with an agricultural cycle as the very result of Pombal's management. This period would be the turning point for a dynamics determined by agriculture, which improved on by world market situations, particularly those linked to the independence war in the USA, would find significant limitation only with the emergence of the new cycle centered on extractive rubber, which began around the second half of the XIX century. The results discussed here do not show that Pombal's period is the moment when finally the foundations of the Amazon economy were established. In fact, it was a vital and creative time for a trajectory, which even though started almost ¾ of a century before, imposed itself marking the reforms of the period, which in turn conditioned indelibly the history of the region.

A natureza nos planos de desenvolvimento da Amazônia (1955 -1985)
(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016-03-11) BATISTA , Iane Maria da Silva; MOURÃO, Leila; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5665064793338456
This thesis aims to analyze how Amazon nature was conceived and appropriated in the Amazon development plans elaborated to be implemented between 1955 and 1985. Historical processes and their implementation were delineated, emphasizing their social and environmental dimensions. The research document base was formed by the development plans, reports, government acts and statements, magazines and newspapers, legislations, cartographic images, besides the literature related to the theme. The analyses were based on the theoretical and methodological principles of Environmental History. The evidences produced revealed that water, soil, forests and subsoil acquired new meanings in statements and actions envisaged in state planning. This process reflected a conception of Amazon nature as a source of natural resources for maintenance and expansion of the adopted development model that did not take into consideration the region historical dimension. It was observed during the interpretation of a theoretical and methodological matrix in the wording of the plans that indicate continuity among them. The measures of environmental content, incorporated in the elaboration of the plans in the 1970s, resulted from pressures from multilateral financial institutions, to guarantee financial resources to ongoing projects. At the same time, some initiatives formed in defense of the Amazon by: intellectuals, social movements, religious institutions, peasants, rubber tappers and Indigenous people with distinctive interests, relocated the discussion on nature. The understanding of the historical dimension that guided the conceptions of nature in the various analyzed processes enable the emergence of a more diverse and richer social history of the Amazon.

Pecuária e desmatamento: uma análise das principais causas diretas do desmatamento na Amazônia

Cattle Ranching is the main causes of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon region. This paper analyses the proximate causes of deforestation using linear regressions with panel data. The model evaluates the contribution of the main land uses for deforestation from 2000 to 2006. Deforestation data from INPE-PRODES, number of heads of cattle, and area of temporary and permanent crops from IBGE are the data used in the analysis (782 municipalities). The result of the regressions shows that deforestation is strongly associated with cattle ranching. Soybean plantations are also strongly related with deforestation in the model. This trend is reinforced by the growth in demand for meat in the domestic and international markets. To be effective in reducing deforestation rates, public policies must therefore act on the underlying causes of deforestation, reducing the forces that lead to its expansion on the area where deforestation is occurring.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2005-08-04) CORÔA FILHO, Vicente Uparajara; BASTOS, Ana Paula Vidal; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1992388595130579; MONTEIRO, Maurílio de Abreu; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8077335023133373
The economic occupation project of the Amazon, which would result in its integration to the national system, beneficiate with great amounts of investment, several of the so-called “big projects” to explore region’s natural resources. At the same time, planners had the perspective that they would act as irradiators of local socio-economic development. Albras, benefiting from this policy, is planned to generate external resources and to contribute to the regional economy dynamic. Surrounding the firm, in Barcarena city, several firms are installed building a productive arrangement that needs to be investigated. The subcontracting network is based on the flexibilization of the production process imposed by the main firm. This research aims to identify the cooperation, innovation and interaction processes among subcontracted firms, as well its eventual relation with local development.
