(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2010) RÊGO, Péricles Sena do; SCHNEIDER, Horacio; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3621033429800270
The Araripe Manakin Antilophia bokermanni (Passeriformes, Pipridae) is the most threatened member of this family, and is classified as “critically endangered”. With an estimated population of only 800 individuals, this species is endemic to a small area (approximately 30 km²) of forest on the slopes of the Araripe Plateau in northeastern Brazil. The urgent need for the implementation of an effective conservation program for the Araripe Manakin has stimulated intensive research into various aspects of its biology. In the present study, we examined sequence variation in segments of the mtDNA and ncDNA in specimens of A. bokermanni and A. galeata. The current analysis provides no evidence for population substructuring nor for a history of population expansion of A. bokermanni. The genetic variability is slightly reduced in comparison with its sister species, but their similarity indicates a relatively recent process of separation, indicated by retention of ancestral polymorphisms (incomplete lineage sorting) all markers. We also did not detect any association between plumage variation and nucleotide variation at MC1R in genus Antilophia. This study represents a contribution of genetics to the Conservation Plan of Araripe Manakin (Antilophia bokermanni).

The aim of this article is to analyse the processes which begins from raw material extraction to the consumption of mangaba, emphazising different actors, their relationships, marketing channels, and consumption characteristics. The research was carried out in the Northeast of Brazil (Brazilian states of Bahia, Alagoas, Sergipe and Pernambuco) using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The main results indicated weak domestication of mangaba trees to attend to an increasing market demand, and threats to extractivism by external factors.

Considerações filogenéticas e biogeografia histórica dos malacostráceos (decápodes e isópodes) cenozóicos do Brasil
(2010-03) TÁVORA, Vladimir de Araújo; PAIXÃO, Gleicy Mara Carvalho; SILVA, Fabrício Araújo da
This work deals the analysis of the Historical Biogeography of the brazilian cenozoic paleocarcinofauna, recorded in the Maria Farinha, Tremembé and Pirabas formations. This taxa has affinity with the tethian carcinofaunas and modern aspect. The paleobiogeographic setting allows to situate their biological events of the origin, dispersional and irradiation trends in the tethian, south high latitude and amphitropical origins. The majority of the brazilian carcinofauna has affinity with the tethian faune, that migrate in two seaways, west and east. The phylogenetic relationships suggest appearence of the Thalassinoidea group from the Caridea infraordo. The Retroplumidae family (genus Costacopluma) recorded at Maria Farinha Formation is directed related with the cenozoic ocypodid (i.e. genus Uca at Pirabas Formation, living in the same ecological niches and environmental tolerances. Also, the morphological similarities between Xanthoidea and Portunoidea in the Paleocene, suggest monophyletic relationships with Goneplacidae and Hexapodidae. The detailed phylogenetic studies in Goneplacidae family reveals that Glyphithyreus genus is related with Eucratopsinae subfamily.

This article analyses the collective management of common goods within the context of mangaba fruit collection; it focuses on the access to resources, the institutional arrangements and the social conflicts among the involved actors. The research was undertaken in northeastern Brazil and is based on observations, interviews and secondary data. The study demonstrates the existence of well preserved mangaba trees due to collective management.

(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-06) FELDMAN, Ariel
This article aims to analyze the politic polarization in Pernambuco between 1829 and 1831. The focus of this analysis is the journalistic work of Benedictine Monk Miguel do Sacramento Lopes Gama (1793-1852). Despite being very difficult to define the nature of the political projects advocated by each group, which expressed their ideas through the press, it is possible to identify the defense of two different kinds of sovereignty. For the first party, the notion of national sovereignty was the key principle that should organize the political institutions. The second party, which cannot be roughly defined as absolutist, still considered monarchic sovereignty one of the most important organizing principles of society.

Increased risk of venous thrombosis by AB alleles of the ABO blood group and Factor V Leiden in a Brazilian population
(2009) LIMA, Magaly do Bom Parto Lopes Vieira; OLIVEIRA FILHO, Aldemir Branco de; CAMPOS, Júlia Furtado; MELO, Fárida Coeli de Barros Correia; NEVES, Washington Batista das; MELO, Raul Antônio Morais; LEMOS, José Alexandre Rodrigues de
Most cases of a predisposition to venous thrombosis are caused by resistance to activated protein C, associated in 95% of cases with the Factor V Leiden allele (FVL or R506Q). Several recent studies report a further increased risk of thrombosis by an association between the AB alleles of the ABO blood group and Factor V Leiden. The present study investigated this association with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in individuals treated at the Hemocentro de Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. A case-control comparison showed a significant risk of thrombosis in the presence of Factor V Leiden (OR = 10.1), which was approximately doubled when the AB alleles of the ABO blood group were present as well (OR = 22.3). These results confirm that the increased risk of deep vein thrombosis in the combined presence of AB alleles and Factor V Leiden is also applicable to the Brazilian population suggesting that ABO blood group typing should be routinely added to FVL in studies involving thrombosis.

The Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode of humans that causes strongyloidiasis, a disease with worldwide distribution particularly common in tropical and subtropical regions. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated the existence of an association of this parasitic disease with Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus type 1 (HTLV-1). In regions where both agents are endemic, the coinfection may result in the development of severe strongyloidiasis, because HTLV-1 causes a reduction in the production of immune components participating in the defense mechanisms against S. stercoralis. Based on this question, this study wanted to help and clarify the role of immunosuppression induced by HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 in the persistence and dissemination of Strongyloides stercoralis. Serological and molecular tests were used to assess the frequency of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 in patients with S. stercoralis treated at University Hospital João de Barros Barreto, Belém Pará, in the period July 2009 to June 2011. In this study, we observed the frequency (5.50%) of anti-HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 in patients with Stongyloides stercoralis. The prevalence of HTLV-1 (3.67%) was higher than that of HTLV-2 (0.92%). The analysis of the sample showed no statistically significant differences in the frequency of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 among men and women. At the distribution of patients with HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 by age group, we observed a higher frequency of the virus among patients with older age. Based on the results in this study, we conclude that there is need for prophylactic measures to prevent the spread of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 among carriers of S. stercoralis and consequently prevent the development of complications resulting from the combination of these agents.
