O Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência Animal (PPGCAN) é um programa do Campus Universitário de Castanhal (CCAST) da Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA) e Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA). O Programa iniciou o nível de Mestrado em 1999 junto à CAPES/MEC, tendo aprovação de sua proposta de Doutorado junto à agência em 2008, com início da primeira turma em 2009, o que certamente contribuirá à formação de massa crítica regional.Se caracteriza por apresentar um conjunto de disciplinas que repassam aos alunos um embasamento teórico e prático, capacitando os mesmos a aplicarem os conhecimentos adquiridos no avanço regional da produção animal. Direcionando as linhas de pesquisa do curso à nutrição, biotecnologia, pastagens, conservação de recursos genéticos, reprodução, sanidade animal, bovinocultura, bubalinocultura, animais silvestres, ecologia aquática e aquicultura.

Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Aspectos clínico-patológicos do envenenamento experimental por Caudisona durissa em equinos(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2012-09-28) LOPES, Cinthia Távora de Albuquerque; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557The clinic-pathological picture and laboratory findings in horses experimentally inoculated with the venom of Caudisona durissa terrificus (Crotalus durissus terrificus, according to the former nomenclature) are described. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the understanding of this type of snake accident in horses. The lyophilized venom was diluted into 1ml of a 0.9% saline solution and was inoculated subcutaneously into five horses, at the doses of 0.12mg/kg (one horse), 0.066mg/kg (two horses) and 0.03mg/kg (two horses). The venom caused death of the horse that had received 0.12mg/kg, and of one horse of the two that had received the dose of 0.066mg/kg. The clinical course varied from 27h27min to 52h29min. The second horse inoculated with 0.066mg/kg recovered within 12 days after inoculation. The dose of 0.03mg/kg had a course of 6 to 10 days but did not cause fatal envenomation. The clinical picture in the horses was characterized by swelling of the inoculation site and adjacent areas, by apathy and lowered head, locomotory alterations shown by dragging of the hoves on the ground, decubitus and difficulty to get up, reduction of auricular, palatal, upperlip and threat reflexes, and increase of heart and breathing frequency. The laboratory examination revealed leukocytosis and lymphocytosis in two horses. There was increase of the creatine-kinase (CK), lactic dehydrogenase (DHL) and ureia; reduction in the seric levels of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. The time of activated partial tromboplastina (TTPA) increased in the horses that died. Post mortem findings were edema of the subcutaneous tissue at the inoculated shoulder, suffusions in the epicard of left and right heart ventricles, bladder replete with urine containing a white-yellowish sediment, and hemorrhagic areas in its mucosa. Histopatologic examination revealed the liver parenchyma with diffuse moderate vacuolation affecting predominantly the intermediate area of the hepatic lobe, and slight dilation of the sinusoides in some areas; in the kidney slight dilation of the uriniferous tubules mainly in the cortex.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Detecção molecular do vírus da imunodeficiência bovina (BIV) em búfalos (Bubalus bubalis) no estado Pará(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-12-12) FERREIRA, Tatiane Teles Albernaz; LEITE, Rômulo Cerqueira; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2859617428983062; SALVARANI, Felipe Masiero; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3339195791140438; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557Bovine viral immunodeficiency is a chronic and progressive disease caused by a lentivirus that affects cattle and buffalo. Although infection is reported in cattle in several countries, including Brazil, in buffalo there are only two reports of infection, one in Pakistan and one in Cambodia. The aim of this research was to verify the occurrence of bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) in buffaloes from the state of Pará, northern Brazil. To verify the occurrence of BIV in herds, the detection of proviral DNA in blood samples from 607 buffaloes obtained from 10 properties in the State of Pará, by semi-nested polymerase chain reaction (snPCR) were made using primers specific for the pol region in the genome of the virus. The 607 samples tested by snPCR for the BIV, 27 (4.4%) were positive. The amplified sequences were confirmed by cloning and nucleotide sequencing. The similarity of nucleotide sequence of the isolates with the reference strain (R-29) was 99%. Epidemiologically, this study provides important initial data, reporting the first detection of BIV in buffaloes in the Brazil and warning of the possibility of the virus function as a risk factor for the health of populations of buffaloes and a potential causative agent of chronic disease.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Determinação dos níveis de fósforo, cobre, cobalto e zinco em bubalinos criados nos municípios de Soure, Salvaterra, Breves e Cachoeira do Arari, na ilha de Marajó, estado do Pará(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2010-05-31) PINHEIRO, Cleyton Prado; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557We studied 104 buffaloes, adults, without distinction of race and sex, reared extensively, without supplementation, in native pastures of low nutritional quality, in the municipalities of Breves, Cachoeira do Arari, Salvaterra and Soure, Marajo Island, Pará. Held collection of liver, bone and blood of 26 animals in the municipality of Salvaterra, 38 animals in the municipality of Soure, 20 animals in the municipality of Breves and 20 animals in the municipality of Cachoeira do Arari. Determination was performed to determine the levels of phosphorus in the blood serum and bone ash and specific gravity on bone and cobalt, copper and zinc in liver tissue. It was observed that the average phosphorus concentrations in blood serum (6.26 mg/dl) and bone (10.77 %), the percentage of ash (60.87 %) and specific gravity (1.59 g/ml) of bone were lower than the critical levels established for cattle, characterizing phosphorus deficiency. The average concentrations of copper (5.57 ppm) and zinc (27.05 ppm) was considered low when compared with reference values, characterizing disability for these elements. In the case of cobalt when considering the values detectable and undetectable by the methodology it was observed that 51.92% of the animals had levels below the reference, indicating the occurrence of cobalt deficiency in these animals. It is emphasized that the deficiencies of copper and zinc showed a more severe since all animals studied showed low levels of these elements.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Diagnóstico das deficiências de macro e micro minerais em búfalas (Bubalus bubalis) provenientes da Ilha de Marajó, Estado do Pará(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-06-30) OLIVEIRA, Carlos Magno Chaves; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557This study aimed to evaluate in buffaloes of the Marajó Island serum concentrations and phosphorus in bones, the percentage of ashes and the specific density of the bones, the levels of copper, cobalt, selenium, zinc and iron before and after selective mineral supplementation. For this study, 14 crossbred buffaloes of Murrah and Mediterranean aged between 18 and 36 months were used. The average values of phosphorus, before supplementation, were 5, 68 mg/dl ± 1.18 in serum and 16.53% ± 0.53 in the bones. The percentage of ashes in bones was 59.95% ± 1.96 and the specific bone density was 1,52 g/cm3 ± 0.32, which demonstrates a phosphorus deficiency in animals raised on the island of Marajó. The average copper values were 7.75 ± 1.73 ppm, the cobalt ± 0.17 0.40 ppm, the zinc of 88.01 ± 35.03 ppm, the 0.22 ppm selenium and iron ± 0.12 1395.72 ± 764.74 ppm. These results indicate a deficiency of copper, zinc and selenium, cobalt and appropriate values of excess iron in the liver. After supplementation for a period of seven months the phosphorus values were 6.61 mg / dl in serum ± 0.87 and 16.90 ± 0.56% in the bones. The percentage of ash was 60.30% ± 0.95 and the specific bone density was 1.71 g/cm3 ± 0.21. These values characterize a significant increase in the concentrations of P in blood serum, in the percentage of P in the ashes and on specific bone density (P < 0.05), however there wasn't a significant increase in the percentage of ash. The average increase in the values of P in the bones and the ashes did not reach heights of normality, however 28.6% of the animals had normal serum P values, 50% had normal values of P in the ashes and 64.3% of the animals had specific normal bone density. There was no response to supplementation in relation to the percentage of ash. Regarding micro minerals, after supplementation values were 205.41 ± 80.54 ppm for copper, 0.40 ± 0.22 ppm for cobalt, 75.71 ± 11.74 ppm for zinc, 1.30 ppm ± 1.34 for selenium and 826.48 ± 394.76 ppm for iron, which shows a significant increase (P <0.05) concentrations of copper and selenium and a significant decrease in the amounts of iron (P <0, 05). There was no response to supplementation in relation to the percentage of ashes. Regarding micro minerals, after supplementation values were 205.41 ± 80.54 ppm for copper, 0.40 ± 0.22 ppm for cobalt, 75.71 ± 11.74 ppm for zinc, 1.30 ppm ± 1.34 for selenium and 826.48 ± 394.76 ppm for iron, which shows a significant increase (P <0.05) concentrations of copper and selenium and a significant decrease in the amounts of iron (P <0, 05). There was no recovery of zinc and cobalt concentrations which remained within the normal range. Failure to increased concentrations of zinc in the liver after supplementation may have occurred because of the high concentrations of calcium in Brachiaria brizantha cv Marandu used in animal nutrition.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Encefalomielite equina Leste na Ilha de Marajó, Pará(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2012-02-29) CAMPOS, Karinny Ferreira; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557Nine cases of equine encephalomyelitis were studied in the Marajó Island, State of Pará, Brazil. The animals had difficulty in maintaining a station, walk in a circle, marked depression, eyelids closed, tongue paralysis, muscle tremors, bruxism, anorexia and dehydration. Some had their ear and eyelid reflexes diminished, decreased tongue tone and tachycardia. Position of self-hearing was observed frequently. The animals were often found leaning on tree trunks and fences to keep themselves on station. At necropsy, they showed hemorrhage of the meninges and spinal cord, and some animals also showed adhesion of the meninges. Histologically there was diffuse encephalitis affecting mainly the gray matter, with meningitis and choroiditis. It was observed the presence of perivascular cuffs consisting of mononuclear inflammatory cells. In two animals it was possible to identificate the Eastern equine encephalitis virus by semi-nested reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (semi-nested RT-PCR).Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Enfermidades podais em bovinos de corte criados em regime extensivo no sudeste do Estado do Pará(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2015-05-22) SILVEIRA, José Alcides Sarmento da; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557The epidemiological study was conducted in 12 properties with the history of foot diseases occurrence and the clinical examination of the affected animals for the diagnosis of foot diseases was performed only in nine of these properties. It was found on the management centers multiple risk factors for digits injuries, as syringes floors paved with rocks, working chutes with iron fittings exposure, loading ramps covered by sharp stones and the lack of maintenance and structural errors. In every farm there was an inappropriate handling of animals. In 91.7% of farms (11/12) there were pickets with trunks of trees and 66.7% (8/12) had areas of sloping relief with stones. Moreover, 16.7% (2/12) of the farms had marsh areas and wetlands. Sodomy was reported in all properties. None of the farms adopted preventive measures related to foot problems. 498 cattle between males and females were examined. The hind limbs were the most affected both in females and in males. 629 lesions were diagnosed in females. The septic pododermatitis was the most common, followed by claw deformities, pododermatitis in the paradigits and digital dermatitis. Between the examined males 285 injuries were diagnosed and the most common were septic pododermatitis, claw deformities and heel erosion. It was concluded that management errors associated with inadequate facilities were factors that contributed to the occurrence of foot diseases in beef cattle in the studied farms. The environmental characteristics favored the development of lesions; combined injuries were more prevalent than the simple ones, being diagnosed in animals in all studied farms; and the early diagnosis was not carried out in the field, which helped to increase the severity and the diversification of the diagnosed foot problems.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Estudo da paratuberculose em búfalos (Bubalus bubalis) no estado do Maranhão(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016-03-11) REIS, Alessandra dos Santos Belo; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557This study investigated paratuberculosis (PTB) in water buffaloes in the state of Maranhão (MA). For that were performed using the rectal biopsy as an auxiliary tool in the collection of samples for ante mortem diagnosis of PTB; dosages of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) in PTB positive animals was performed, as well as the report of the detection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) in the utero and fetus of a buffalo. In the first study were conducted 140 rectal biopsies in buffaloes of Murrah, Mediterranean and their crossbreeds, over the age of three years in São Mateus, MA. These biopsies were processed by Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining and quantitative PCR (qPCR). Postmortem examination of 11 buffaloes with clinical signs suggestive of PTB was performed and samples of ileum and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) were collected for performing qPCR and ZN. By ZN staining of rectal biopsies, 4.3% (6/140) acid-fast bacilli and qPCR, 5% (7/140) had amplification of genetic material. The pathological lesions of four animals were consistent with lesions suggestive of PTB showed acid-fast bacilli and amplification of genetic material. The correlation between rectal biopsy and analysis of ileal tissue and LM, according to the Kappa test was high (K=0.792). In the second study, 13 postmortem examination were carried in buffaloes of Murrah, Mediterranean and their crossbreeds, over the age of three years in the cities of São Mateus and São Luís, MA. Ileum and mesenteric lymph nodes samples were collected for Map search and liver to dosage minerals (Cu, Zn and Fe). Seven buffaloes were positive for PTB and allocated in Group 1; six buffaloes were negative and allocated in Group 2. In the dosing of trace minerals in Group 1 showed levels below the reference values for Cu and Zn. It was observed that the average Cu concentration was 18.0ppm and Zn 68.6ppm. In Group 2 the average Cu concentration was 113.7ppm and Zn 110.0ppm. The iron concentrations in both groups were high (>669ppm). The third study was conducted on a property in São Luís, MA. A buffalo cow pregnant with marked physical debility and clinical signs suggestive of PTB was eutanasiada and necropsiada. Fragments ileum, MLN, uterus, and placenta of buffalo cow were collected; fragments of kidney, liver, umbilical vessel and digestive system (DS) of the fetus were collected and were analyzed by Zn and qPCR. The buffalo cow was positive in ileum samples, mesenteric lymph nodes and uterus in qPCR and the fetus was positive in DS. In the ileum, MLN and feces were observed acid-fast bacilli. It is concluded that rectal biopsy analysis can be used to help diagnose ante mortem. The PTB could lead to mineral deficiency and worsen the clinical condition of the buffaloes. The presence of Map in buffalo can occur in various organs, including the reproductive system and intrauterine transmission can occur in this species.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Estudo das deficiências minerais em vacas em lactação da bacia leiteira do município de Rondon do Pará, estado do Pará(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-12-10) BOMJARDIM, Henrique dos Anjos; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557We conducted a study of mineral deficiencies in lactating cows from dairy herds belonging to 13 properties of the milk basin of Rondon do Pará, in the state of Pará. We determined the levels of phosphorus (P), specific gravity and percentage of ash in the bone and levels of copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in the liver of 47 dairy cows in lactation 2. These samples were collected by means of biopsies performed in the top third of the 12th rib on the right side and the caudal edge of the caudate lobe of the liver, respectively. The herds were composed of crossbred (Holstein x Zebu), kept in extensive production system on Brachiaria brizantha cv Marandu and received mineral supplementation. The mineral mixture in 12 properties were commercial type, called "full" and the owners added a quantity of salt above the manufacturer's recommendations in ten properties. In addition, the mineral mixtures were provided in troughs without covering in seven properties and in other eight, the providing of the mineral mix was not performed daily. In 11 properties there were clinical histories consistent with mineral deficiencies in livestock and placenta retention and osteophagia were the most frequently reported ones. The results of chemical analysis showed deficiency in P in five properties, in Co in two properties, in Se in eight properties, in Zn in eight properties. It is concluded that the deficiency of P, Se and Zn occurs in a greater proportion and the deficiency of Co occurs in a lesser proportion and the mineral supplementation performed in the properties do not supply the daily demands of P, Se and Co, based on the estimated daily consumption of 30 g of NaCl per animal and the troughs little adequate or inadequate for proper supplementation, as well as inconstant supply of mineral mixtures contribute to the deficiency of one or more minerals.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Freqüência de anticorpos anti-Borrelia burgdorferi em eqüinos na mesorregião metropolitana de Belém, Estado do Pará(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2006) GALO, Katiany Rocha; FONSECA, Adivaldo Henrique da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4411441162862608; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557Lyme borreliosis is a multisistemic disease caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi latu sensu and transmited by ixodide ticks, affecting both humans beings and domesticated animals and having wild animals as Its natural reservoirs, besides of being a zoonosis of wide geographic distribution. We picked 300 blood samples of apparently health horses from the cities of Ananideua, Belém, Benevides, Castanhal, Marituba and Santa Izabel of the Pará, all included in the metropolitan mesoregion of Belém – Pará. The samples were picked up by the jugular vein and the serum analised through indirect Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) in the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. The aim of this work was to verify the serum epidemiology of Borrelia burgdorferi in the metropolitan mesorregion of Belém. The frequency of serum positivity was 26,67% (n=80), being 72 (24%) with title of 1:800, six (2%) with 1:1600 and two (0,6%) with 1:3200. The serum frequency by gender was approximately 13,67% of females and 13% of males. The thoroughbred and the half-breed animals had 9% and 18% of frequency, respectively. There was no significative difference in the serum positivity with regard to cities, gender, race and age. The frequency found corroborates the hypothesis of occurrence of Borrelia sp. in the studied region.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Infecção por Brucella abortus em búfalas (Bubalus bubalis)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2016) SOUSA, Melina Garcia Saraiva de; SALVARANI, Felipe Masiero; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3339195791140438; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557The objective of this study was to detect Brucella abortus and injuries caused by the bacteria in fetal membranes and fetuses, and in lymph nodes of buffaloes as well as to describe the lesions caused. Twenty buffaloes serologically positive for brucellosis were used and subjected to stamping for collection of material from the closed uterus of several months gestation. Fragments of lymph nodes were collected. Fetal age was determined by ultrasound examination and the size of fetuses was measured at necropsy. The samples were subjected to histopathology and qPCR. From the second month of pregnancy on it was possible to detect the presence of B. abortus DNA in amniotic fluid, allantoic liquid and uterus, and from the fifth month on in placenta, heart, spleen, kidney, lung, intestine, liver and lymph nodes of the fetuses. The main pathological findings were fibrinous suppurative necrotic placentitis, and chronic endometritis. The detection of B. abortus DNA in the lymph nodes was checked from the fourth month of pregnancy in seven buffaloes and in a post-calving buffalo. Acute to chronic lymphadenitis was histologically diagnosed. B. abortus DNA was detected in all evaluated groups of lymph nodes; the mammary lymph nodes were the most affected.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Intoxicação por sal em ovinos e caprinos no estado do Pará(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-06-30) DUARTE, Marcos Dutra; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557This paper reports the first outbreaks of salt poisoning in sheep and goats in Brazil on a farm in the state of Pará. The evaluation of the facilities and the handling indicates as predisposing factors the excessive intake of mineral mixture and water restriction. The first outbreak occurred in sheep, eight animals (1,46%) were affected from a total of 545 animals and four (50%) of them died. The second and third outbreaks occurred in a herd of 191 goats. In the second outbreak, four animals (2,09) were affected and none died. In the third outbreak, eight goats (4,19%) were affected and two (25%) of them died. In sheep the main clinical signs were recumbency, decrease or absence of cutaneous sensibility, absence of auricular, palpebral and menace reflexes, mydriasis, nystagmus, opisthotonus, spasticity of limbs, somnolence and stupor. Beside this signs observed there were bloat, diarrhea, tachypnea, tachycardia, dehydration and polyuria. The clinical course of the disease in sheep that died ranged from 2 and a half hours to 48 hours. The main clinical signs in the goats were muscle weakness, abnormal posture of the head and neck such us staying with his head down, head and neck rotation, neck extension and lateral deviation of the neck, sternal and lateral recumbency, mydriasis, absence of pupillary reflex to light, stay with pelvic and thoracic limbs abduced or in broad-based, increased flexor reflex, polyuria and intense thirst were observed. They were observed also rumen hypomotility, tachycardia, decreased skin turgor. The clinical course in goats of second outbreak varied from 4 to 24 hours. In the goats of third outbreak who died the evolution ranged by six to eight hours and two to three days in the goats who have recovered. The medium of serum concentration of sodium and potassium of 31 sheep from the same group affected on samples collected during the outbreak revealed hypernatremia (190 mEq/l) and hyperkalemia (8.2 mEq/l), respectively. The mean serum concentrations of sodium and potassium of 36 goats from the same lot of animals affected in the second outbreak in samples taken two days before the onset of clinical signs revealed hypernatremia (167 mEq/l) and the average level of potassium (4.7 mEq/l) within the reference values for the species. The averages of these same parameters in samples from goats in the third outbreak with clinical signs of intoxication (143,7 mEq/l for sodium and 3.9 mEq/l for potassium) were within the reference values. However, the averages of these same parameters in samples of goats in the third outbreak, with clinical signs of intoxication (143.7 mEq/l for sodium and 3.9 mEq/l for potassium), were within the reference values. At necropsy in only one of four sheep there was flattening of the cerebral gyri. Microscopically in this sheep there was a vacuolization of the neuropil in the cerebral cortex with moderate intensity in the intermediary surface and mild on the superficial, with increased of perineural and perivascular spaces. In these areas there was still markedly swollen nucleus of astrocytes and acute neuronal necrosis. Noteworthy macroscopic or microscopic changes were not observed in the goats. The dosages of sodium showed high values in the brain of the poisoning animals, in an ovine value of 3,513 ppm and in two goats, values of 3,703 and 3,675 ppm. Five goats of the third outbreak were treated with dexamethasone and thiamine, intramuscularly, twice daily for two days, and water was offered in small amounts three times a day. All treated animals were recovered in three days. The diagnosis of salt poisoning was based on epidemiology, clinical signs, in the lesions, in the dosages of sodium in serum and brain and in the response to treatment in five goats.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Lesões traumáticas na pele causadas pelos espinhos de Mimosa pudica e Mimosa debilis em equídeos(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2012-02-24) REIS, Alessandra dos Santos Belo; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557We studied traumatic injury of the skin in horses caused by traumatic plants, popularly known as "sleep-mary", "Poppy", "scraper", "malice" and "do not touch me". The study was conducted on a farm in the district of Castanhal, northeastern of the state of Para, where there were technical visits, epidemiological study, blood samples, biopsies of affected skin and collection of plants. The study included 25 horses, 14 males and 11 females, aged between six months and eight years. The pasture consisted of Brachiaria humidicola and was heavily invaded by traumatizing plants. The animals showed ulcerative lesions of irregular borders, on the head (nose, muzzle, upper and lower lips and chamfer), oral cavity (buccal vestibule and gum) and limbs (billets, metacarpals and metatarsals and scapular-humeral joint). The histopathological examination revealed foci of cutaneous erosions, characterized by loss and epidermal necrosis with spongiosis and vesicular degeneration of the remaining epidermis and mild inflammatory infiltrate in the underlying dermis, consisting predominantly of macrophages and, to a lesser degree, eosinophils. We identified two plants, Mimosa pudica and Mimosa debilis, both from the Leguminosae Mimosoideae family. Based on these results we can conclude that the skin lesions were caused by the traumatic action of Mimosa pudica and Mimosa debilis.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Periodontite em ovinos no estado do Pará: etiologia, aspectos epidemiologicos e clinico-patologicos(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2015-01-29) SILVA, Natália da Silva e; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557This paper describes the epidemiological, clinical, pathological and bacteriological the first periodontitis record in sheep in Brazil occurred in a rural property in the municipality of Benevides, Para. The outbreak occurred about a month after grazing in the area of Panicum maximum cv. Massai, which suffered agricultural practices, there was swelling in the jaw in a few animals, mostly those over the age of 36 months. The extraoral examination was performed in 545 sheep and there was swelling of the jaw in 3.7% of them. Clinical signs were low body score, rough hair coat and dull, some relaxation and loss of premolars and upper and lower molar teeth, abscess and fistula formation in the affected site, demonstration of pain on palpation and difficulty chewing. Between the 39 heads of young animals analyzed in the post-mortem examination, 51.3% had lesions somewhere and between the 38 analyzed after maceration, 73.7% also had injuries. 45% of the lesions from the 39 heads were in the maxilla, 15% in the mandible and 40% in both structures (maxilla and mandible) and from those heads with injuries observed after maceration 50% of the lesions were in the maxilla and 50% in the maxilla and mandible. Between the 17 heads of adult animals analyzed in the post-mortem examination and after maceration all had lesions somewhere. In the post-mortem examination, 11.8% had lesions in the mandible and 88.2% in both structures; after maceration, 5.9% were in the maxilla, 11.8% in the mandible and 82.3% in both structures. The histopathological findings revealed a chronic pyogranulomatous inflammatory process. To characterize the subgingival microbiota of the 14 sheep with periodontitis it was performed the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), especially for microorganisms belonging to the red complex Socransky (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia and Treponema denticola) and other possible Gram-negative and Gram-positive periodontopathogens. There were identified in 50% of the samples Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia in 92.8% and Treponema denticola in 78.5%. The three periodontal pathogens belonging to the red complex occurred simultaneously in 42.8% of the samples. We also identified in at least one of the examined animals Campylobacter rectus, Eikenella corrodens, Enterococcus faecium, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia, Prevotella nigrescens, and Prevotella loeschii. In the 14 samples Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Dialister pneumosintes, Enterococcus faecalis and Porphyromonas gulae were not detected. The results showed that the sheep periodontitis occurred in the municipality of Benevides - PA has an infectious etiology and rushed a significant number of animals, many with bulging of the jaw; had high incidence in young and involved all of the adult animals post-mortem and after maceration examined.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Prevalência da anemia infecciosa equina na Ilha de Marajó, estado do Pará, Brasil(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014) FREITAS, Nayra Fernanda de Queiroz Ramos; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of equine infectious anemia in the municipalities of Cachoeira do Arari, Salvaterra, Santa Cruz do Arari and Soure, in the Marajó Island, State of Pará, Brazil. For serological survey were selected 349 samples collected from June 2012 to March 2013, tested by agar gel immunodiffusion. Blood count was performed in 65 samples and biochemical examinations in 70, in which was researched urea, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, gamma glutamyl transferase, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin and direct bilirubin. A prevalence of 24.06% (84/349) was verified. The average number of red blood cells was significantly lower in seropositive animals in relation to the seronegative ones and there was no significant difference in mean results of hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, platelets, in the white blood cell count, as well as in the biochemical examination. The clinical observed was poor nutritional status, apathy, pale mucous membranes, dehydration and elevation in heart and respiratory rate. At necropsy, the primary findings in all horses were jaundiced housing, small accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity, as well as hepatomegaly and splenomegaly. The histopathological examination showed spleen and liver with hemosiderosis. The equine infectious anemia is endemic in the cities studied.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Prevalência sorológica e molecular de Babesia bovis e Babesia bigemina em búfalos (Bubalus bubalis) na Ilha de Marajó, Pará(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-06-26) LIMA, Danillo Henrique da Silva; BARBOSA NETO, José Diomedes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1516707357889557The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in water buffaloes of the Marajó Island, State of Pará, Brazil. We used an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA), with total antigen containing proteins outer surface, and polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), involving the use of SYBR Green based on amplification of a small fragment of the cytochrome b gene. The prevalence of positive animals in iELISA to B. bovis B. bigemina and mixed infection was 24.87% (199/800), 20.75% (166/800) and 18.75% (150/800), respectively. Using the PCR, the presence of B. bovis was detected in 15% (18/199) and B. bigemina in 16% (19/199) of animals, and of these, 58% (11/19) presented co-infected by the two agents. The results show a low prevalence of an- tibodies anti-B. bovis and anti-B. bigemina in water buffaloes from Marajó Island. However, it was observed that the agents of bovine babesiosis circulate in buffaloes, and these may act as reservoirs.
