It is observed that the historians that research about family in Brazil had been come back toward the Southeastern region, in special the São Paulo society, and few have directed its studies for other regions, clearly those regions where they had been developed societies had not directly entailed to the exporting sector of the Colony and the societies that not received great contingent from foreign. It is also known that the studies of the family, when associated to the historical demography in the Captainship of Grão-Pará, had not obtained more resulted detailed of what the identification of approach statisticians of the distribution’s men and women of different ethnic-social category. It is in this direction that this dissertation, by means of the census of 1778 of the Captainship of Grão-Pará and the trajectory’s analysis of the elite family Morais Bittencourt (1750-1790), intends to delineate the elites and social hierarchies in the society of Pará.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Cruentas guerras: índios e portugueses nos sertões do Maranhão e Piauí (primeira metade do século XVIII)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2011-08-19) MELO, Vanice Siqueira de; CHAMBOULEYRON, Rafael Ivan; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7906172621582952In the captaincies of Maranhão and of Piauí, in Portuguese America, there were many wars against Indians throughout the first half of the eighteenth century. This dissertation discusses how the space of these captaincies was described in colonial texts, as well as how the troops contributed to transform the landscape of the region. This dissertation examines how the colonial landscape was composed both by the Indians spaces and by the relationship that indigenous groups established with each other and with Luso-brazilian settlers. In this scenario logging walked paripassu with extraction, agriculture and other manufacturing activities, catalyzing population and providing fixing stocks mainly the banks of rivers, major roads moving people and goods. It is based on primary sources from the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino and published materials, such as the Anais da Biblioteca Nacional and the Anais do Arquivo Público do Pará. It explains the reasons why metal coins arrived and circulated so late in the region, and the consequences of the use of “natural coins” for the region’s society and economy.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Em outras margens do atlântico: tráfico negreiro para o estado do Maranhão e Grão-Pará (1707-1750)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009-12-11) BARBOSA, Benedito Carlos Costa; CHAMBOULEYRON, Rafael Ivan; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7906172621582952This thesis analyzes the slave trade to the State of Maranhão and Grão-Pará throughout the first half of the eighteenth century. Slave trade to this region was triangular-based and was organized with strong support from the Portuguese Crown, which financed and provided the necessary structure, especially when epidemics of smallpox burst in the region and killed many Indians. At that time, the residents and authorities discussed the importance of the African slaves for the economic growth of the Amazon region, as it helped to overcome the severe lack of labor force in that region. This thesis also analyzes some economic activities developed in the region, such as the sugar mills and brandy stills, the factory of wood, housework and buildings, where it is possible to see the Africans sharing spaces with other social subjects: Mulattoes, Cafusoes, and mainly Indians.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Engenhos e engenhocas: atividade açucareira no estado do Maranhão e Grão-Pará (1706-1750)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009-03-09) CUNHA, Ana Paula Macedo; CHAMBOULEYRON, Rafael Ivan; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7906172621582952The sugar cane activity in the State of Maranhão and Grão-Pará, instead of been barely treated for the Brazilian historiography, shows some peculiarities. This thesis pretends to analyze the sugar cane activity in the State in the first half of 18th century and intent to understand the importance of sugar in the region, where this activity was intensely practiced in the called “Brazil Colonial History”. Working with the manuscripts and other documents produced in the period, this thesis intent to identify the meanings of the sugar in this particularly region – not only economic meanings – with the purpose to explain the continuity of the sugar cane activity behalf characteristics problems of it history, like the leak of slaves, Indian attacks, inexistence of metallic coin, etc.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Entre costas brasílicas: o tráfico interno de escravos em direitura a Amazônia, c.1778-c.1830(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2013-09-13) SANTOS, Diego Pereira; LAHON, Didier André Roger; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1360485249187891After the end of the monopoly drilled by the so-called pombalina company, strategically designed for the Amazon during the second half of the eighteenth century, emerge an internal slave trade by sea in directness to these stops. This slave trade was seen by royal authorities as a danger to the survival of their businesses and agriculture. On the other hand, there were many merchants and residents of the northern area of the colony and province that received the willingly African labor coming from Brazilian coastal areas. In this dissertation, from that internal trafficking of slaves, I realize the great importance of this slave trade to Amazon looking for reflect on their mechanisms of functioning and reproduction.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Entre índios e verbetes: a política linguística na Amazônia portuguesa e a produção de dicionários em língua geral por jesuítas centro-europeus (1720-1759)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2017-08-22) PRUDENTE, Gabriel de Cássio Pinheiro; BARROS, Maria Cândida Drumond Mendes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1026942131180068; ARENZ, Karl Heinz; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4213810951901055The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the linguistic policy of the Society of Jesus and the Portuguese government for the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão and to relate it to the production process of three dictionaries in “General Language” written by Jesuits of Central European origin who worked in the Amazon Region in the context of the Pombal reforms in the 1750s. Firstly, it sought to understand the guidelines of Society of Jesus for a choice and standardization of an Indian language in Brazil for the catechization of the indians and positioning of the jesuits and Portuguese State in relation to “General Language” in Amazonia. Secondly, it was reconstituted the trajectory of a group of european center jesuits in Portuguese Amazonia in the mid eighteenth century,whose members probably wrote three dictionaries in “General Language”. Finally, using the concept of cultural mediation, the dictionaries are understood as products of a process of negotiation of meanings, constituting both translation and classification texts, as well as instruments for learning the “General Language”. This addresses the defense policies engendered by the Portuguese crown for that region. For the analysis we used as object of study the paid troop, because this is the professional military force in the colony, and it is also responsible for undertaking actions of war and trim. Therefore, this study demands to develop and discuss issues such as: the representation of companies paid in various correspondences between the colony and the kingdom, and from that perceive the military state of the captaincy, the composition of the troop through the analysis of impressment and its multiple meanings for the soldiers and for the region, and the mobilization of this defense force by mapping the detachment of soldiers and troop movements in Grão-Pará. This is also the implication of such mobilization in the recruited family.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) As letras humanas: os povos indígenas e o ensino da língua portuguesa na Amazônia Pombalina (1751-1763)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2012) CUNHA, Jonas Araújo da; RICCI, Magda Maria de Oliveira; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4368326880097299Indigenous peoples who inhabited the valley of the Amazon during the period of Portuguese colonization were submitted at disctints times by different agents and various instruments, the incisors acculturation processes aimed at inserting the "civilized" world. As the use of humane letters understood the practice of reading and writing in the portuguese language the most evident. For a century (1650-1750) the Society of Jesus stood out among the regular orders who settled in the region such as that implemented more villages missionary catechesis aimed beyond the teaching of humane letters to the native peoples. In the second half of the eighteenth century in the context of the "Pombal Age" the State Luso, especially from the letters and reports of Francisco Xavier de Mendonça Furtado Governor of Grand Para and Maranhao between 1751 and 1759, officially denounced the view that the lamentable "state school" in the Amazon Valley evidenced in disregard of the missionary orders of the Jesuits in general and in particular with the teaching of the native subjects of the King. Proof of this most uncomfortable reality was the massive use of so-called General Language at the expense of the Portuguese language. Given this reality, and considering that the use of Portuguese language was the "cornerstone of civility" as expressed in the text directory that should be observed in the villages of the Indians of Para and Maranhao, The State encompasses and assumes the task of promoting teaching of humane letters in Villages, Towns and Places of the Amazon Valley. Job's successor Governor Mendonça Furtado Manuel Bernardo de Mello e Castro (1759-1761) will make great effort and personal commitment to fulfill, given the enormous structural and conjucture obstacles that presented themselves. Starting from the idea that the Northwestern Amazon is characterized as a "border zone" where different actors - Indians, Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch - had the opportunity to exchange social experiences and cultures in order to get the supremacy in that region. Aiming to the Northwest Amazon was more the result of power relations at the local level, as in the case of Portuguese monsoons and the Jesuit mission of Maynas than an imperial enterprise. It addresses three main issues. First, the various ways by which this religious order acquired its many properties. Second, the maximization of the Jesuits‟ profits from the direct management of their properties and trade. Third, the problems that derived from the recurrent denial of the Society to pay the royal tithes. I analyze these relationships at a time when the imperial government sought many ways to get control over the indigenous, so the relationship between them and the traders settled amid disputes of interests, which largely contributed to put regatões as the ones who deceive the Indians and these Indians, therefore, the deceived ones. Initially this study recovers the efforts colonizers of the Portuguese administration of D. Francisco de Souza Coutinho, illustrated Governor of the Province of Pará. With him were intensified the cession of land and forms of control. Roads were opened, changed locations of place or function and indigenous peoples displaced and rearranged. Legally, the Turiaçu region was occupied through donation of land from the concession and confirmation of letters of allotments still in middle of century XVIII. Ho we ver there were alsoo ther forms of occupation and organizations developed by in dians, blacks and poor white men. This present work has as object of study such description, providing an understanding which is distinct from the commonly accepted one: Descrição das plantas e animais da capitania do Grão Pará emerged as a logical extension of the metropolitan policies. Thus, it is not a formulation suggested or determined by the colonial bureaucracy, but a work motivated by colonial demands. Moreover, this thesis aimed to understand the intents which were proper of the Italian architect’s condition of settler, avoiding to conceive his production as a naturalist only as a reflection of the scientific thinking in Europe. Formerly, seeking to understand this activity as something related to the context of the local colonial dynamics. It thus addresses the role colonists thought they had to play in the government and administration of the colony, and therefore focuses on their relations with the Crown and colonial authorities.
