Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A ciência do governar: positivismo, evolucionismo e natureza em Lauro Sodré(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2006) COELHO, Alan Watrin; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231The journalistic polemic that, in 1881, involved the then lieutenant Lauro Sodré, bishop D. Macedo Costa and catholic newspaper A Boa Nova occurred in a moment in which the factors that provoked the future deterioration of the Brazilian Empire were already present in Brazilian society. In this work, we aimed at studying the confrontation as a discursive representation of an ideological clash in the social and intellectual aspects of Brazil in the late years of the XIX century: concerning Lauro Sodré, science and progress, appointed as fundamental instruments to the Republic; concerning A Boa Nova, faith and religion, considered essential instruments to the Monarchy. According to the philosophical-historical perspective of positivism, such questions were basic to the process of social evolution, including its political aspects. It shall be also noted that, in the masterpiece of evolutionist theory, Charles Darwin‟s On the origin of species by means of natural selection (1859), historical movement is decisively subordinated to natural laws and is, therefore, inserted in the broader process of evolution of the Universe. Evolution is effectively considered not as a simple movement, but as an improvement, a progress. To the positivist eyes of Lauro Sodré, the idea of a Monarchy connected to the survival of the conception of divine origin of Power appeared as a valid representation of the non-epistemological states of Humanity: the Metaphysical and the Theological ones; on the other hand, the Republic appeared as the only form of government “compatible with human dignity”. Projecting this polemic on the Brazilian mental realities of that time, we obtain, ultimately, the revelation of one of the components of the nature and forms that the complex relations between philosophical thought and hegemonic political object acquired in the movement of the ideas in Brazil towards the end of the XIX century.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Civilizar a nação pela instrução pública: formação de professores e ensino primário no Pará (1891-1909)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2015-08-07) COSTA, Edivando da Silva; LACERDA, Franciane Gama; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1007392320101957This paper discusses teacher training for primary education in Pará, during the early years of the republican regime. We aim to understand the meanings attributed by the military to their daily activities, whether at the institutional level or in the middle calendar. We use this insight to the documentation (photographic records, newsletters, posters) of the First Regional Air Command headquartered in Belém (I COMAR), and systematic interviews of military personnel and their families. These two spheres - Civil-Military - are focused on crossing their experiences in the civil, may have a direct or indirect relation with the political, economic and social aspects of the military regime.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Em águas e lendas da Amazônia: os outros brasis de Waldemar Henrique e Mário de Andrade (1922-1937)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009) DIAS, Robert Madeiro; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231Mário de Andrade and Waldemar Henrique are conceptualized Brazilian artists. Women, who were charged of managing a home, would essentially perform a man‟s function, and they were the only ones who provided for the family‟s economy and ‘education at home. Other focus of the analysis refers to the presence of the captives on the wills (testaments), which is something to be considered, when it comes to drawing an outline of the slaves‟ economic and social value. It‟s also of major importance to understand the various ways slaves were used by their masters in the preparation of the will. Thus, an effort is made to elucidate the criteria employed for the description of the goods (slaves), with some focus on the liberty concessions made by means of the wills. It‟s equally relevant to approach the dynamics involving men and women during their will‟s making process. This study gives way to a reverberation over the routine of Belém do Grão Para‟s inhabitants, and their final arrangements during the act of making a will.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A engenharia da história: natureza, geografia e historiografia na Amazônia(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009) MORAES, Tarcisio Cardoso; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231Of the end of century XIX even during the first decades of century XX, the engineers had been between the main names of the production of the historiography “pareanse”. This description has as objective to examine the conformation of a historiography tradition marked by the narrow dialogue with the geographic thought. The proximity between history and geography was articulated in such a way about of a perception dated regarding the social function that fit to each one of them, how about of a project politician thought for the “Amazônia”. In search to redefine, now under the republican look, the bases of the regional identity, it fit to history to review and to recover the Amazonian past inserting the region in a long tradition marked for the gradual development of the civilization. Already to geography it fulfilled to establish the bases of the necessary space knowledge to the identity local, and basic to the action of the State. I have as object the engineers João de Palma Muniz, Enrique Santa Rosa and Ignácio Baptista de Moura. Between historiography production, celebrations of civic events and the foundation of institutions, the project politician of these three engineers was part of a ampler movement of the “paraense” intellectuality. In other words, the engineer-historians had been special part of an ample exercise of understanding of the construction of the identity of the Amazon region from the optics of the power of the State-Nation.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Esculápios tropicais: a institucionalização da medicina no Pará, 1889-1919(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2008) RODRIGUES, Silvio Ferreira; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231This thesis fits into a proposal to revive the social history of medicine in Pará in a new perspective. Analyse the construction of the power and prestige of medicine and medical science in society paraense in the turn of the nineteenth century to the twentieth century is the main objective of this work. The intention is to show that, far from enjoying a hegemony in the world of healing and have an inherent power capable of shaping the society of the time, the doctors still faced enormous difficulties to legitimize their science among the most diverse social categories. While the republican authorities, in the name of "civilization" in the tropics, followed with its policy of hygiene of urban space and fight against epidemics, the paraense population still in search of relief from their problems in the traditional arts of healing. However, if the medicine is popular up in one of the biggest obstacles to the affirmation of medical academics as masters of healing, the disunity, lack of ethics and consensus within the medical profession not ceased to be some of the significant factors of discrediting that hung over the figure of official representatives of medicine in full Brazilian Republic. To address many problems, doctors, little by little, trying overcome their differences and created rules and ties of solidarity able to unite them around the common goals, consolidating identity of a group which strengthened its corporate and fought for power and prestige they both aim.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) As formas de morar na Belém da Belle-époque (1870-1910)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2008) SOARES, Karol Gillet; COELHO, Geraldo Mártires; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5007416707293009By the mid-19th Century the capital of the State of Pará started being affected by the first urban transformations resulting from the richness brought in by the extraction of rubber. Beginning with the expansion of the rubber economy in 1870, this conjuncture allowed for interventions and improvements based on the ideals of modernity, progress and civilization introduced by the public authority in the construction of a modern Belém: this period extends up to the end of the rubber cycle, around 1910. When evoking the architecture of the period under study, as seen by common sense, one should stress the great legacy of the rubber cycle, reflected in a process set in riches and opportunities in which houses were built according to imported, European standards of modernity and became the very symbol of that modernity. Then again, there were also houses that threatened the project of urban modernization created for a New Belém, which prompted the creation of some guidelines and measures in order to prevent or remove those non-conforming abodes, forcing their dwellers to live in the outskirts of the city. Thus, we realize this context allowed for the building of new and different kinds of dwelling, in which the dwellers’ resources would be evidenced by the architectural division of their houses, both bourgeois and popular – two extremes between which the forms of habitation in the Belle Époque in Belém could be defined. Thus the house becomes an important document for the understanding of the influence of external effects – economical, social, technical, cultural, related to public policies, artistic, spatial and others – on its construction. The greatest challenge of this paper is to reveal the habitational diversity found in the different forms of dwelling in the period in question.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) “Matutos” ou astutos? Projects and ideologies were created, usually revolving around the possibilities of modernity and integration in the region, long considered a legend and mineral reserves, the kingdom of the forest and the "plain", isolated space, far, a true "void" of "tropical paradise "or" green hell ". Since the clashes in the Colony and the Empire on integrated or separate from central government to large projects in the 1970s, the local intelligentsia and the media point of views expressed and assumed, in many cases, policy positions. I tried to get a little in this debate, I refer to the first decades of the twentieth century, and finding this past characters that reflect the new actors of this: the intellectuals and the most modern means of communication between the wars, next to the cinema, radio.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) O mundo binoquiano: narrativas, mulheres e modernidades em Belém do Pará(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2010) NEVES, Maira Wanderley; FIGUEIREDO, Aldrin Moura de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4671233730699231This work leans over on the periodical O Binóculo, that circulated in Belém in the end of century XIX, from 1897. With narrative constructed around personages of demi-monde belenense, O Binóculo weaves in its pages a binoquiana society that circulates for urbe, considering questions specifies of that society, submerged in the ideals of modernity and progress and living under the sign of the Belle- Époque. In this case, the picture is an attempt to revive the great Lusitanian achievements, using an analogy, as if the Republican establishment gains grand scales, characteristic of European conquests of the colonial period. Therefore, having a last fact, capable of generating a unity, it was considered essential to the formation of a nation. Illnesses and epidemics have been in the focus of the discussion of medical-sanitary practices. The doctor’s hygienism has become recurrent speech of intervention in the inhabitants’ daily Space, where the prophylaxes’ campaigns were considered responsible for the cure of the city. The proposed actions by medical doctors create tensions among inhabitants and public Authorities in face of the alliance between the medical knowledge and the government, topic Which I have chosen to analyze in order to explain the day-to-day of the coercive actions, with The intention of understand such alliance. Analyzing medical articles in the press, literary theoretical, journalists, politicians, Medical reports, government’s messages, photographs and charges, it was possible to follow The meanings attributed by the contemporaries related to epidemics as the smallpox, Tuberculosis and yellow fever, for example, considering the medical knowledge. The Belle Époque in Belém it was no more considered in this paper as a historiographical crystal, in face Of the adversity of anonymous citizens’ way of life. The city has become a laboratory of Experiences that propose to cure it in order to reach such divulged economic development. The city has been left in the doctor’s hands. The consolidation of this alliance has been given To the well-known sanitarian Oswaldo Cruz, that arrived in Belém City in 1910 to fight Against the yellow fever with the complete support of the governor João Coelho. On the other Hand, the cure of the city or “paraense necropolis” has brought out larger significances, Among them, coincidentally, the burial of the amarílico evil, as well as, the burial of colonel Antonio Lemos’ oligarchy.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Vida material: entre casas e objetos, Belém 1920-1945(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009) GOMES, Elane Cristina Rodrigues; VIEIRA JÚNIOR, Antonio Otaviano; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6764908679902300The material life in the city of Belém is the stage of the analysis of this work, that seek to understand the social, economic and cultural relations through the universe of the homes and the objects of wealthy families between 1920-1945.
