Based on the reading of “O despertar dos mocambos” (1936/1937) tale, of Josué de Castro's (1908-1973), this article seeks to interpret the process of significance of Recife's mocambo space present in the josueanian’s narrative. In the mentioned text, the landscape assumes the role of protagonist, since it evidences the experimentation of cultural, discursive and social values, underway in the narrative action. According to Michel Collot (2012), the concept of Geocrítica, that is, to study less the references or references that the text is nourished and more the images and significations that it produces, seeks to analyze the “O despertar dos mocambos” tale in view of observation that accompanies the imaginary creation of the mucambópolis. At present, the work of josuenian's ficcion interacts with both the broad sociological consultation and the recent approach to literary theory. More than revealing the frame of the capital of Pernambuco, the appreciation of the story “O despertar dos mocambos” offers the possibility to rethink the relation between the landscape and the fictional writing.
