Cabanagem, cidadania e identidade revolucionária: o problema do patriotismo na Amazônia entre 1835 e 1840

Cabanagem was a social revolution that decimated the Amazonia's population in a wide territory. In contrast to this wide and international scenery, Cabanagem was, and it still is, analyzed as regional movement, typical of the regency period. However, the "patriot" cabanos created, throughout the movement, a feeling of common identity shared by people of the different etnias cultures which it extrapolated these initial caracteristics. This whole process is the central object of this article.

O Celeiro da Amazônia: agricultura e natureza no Pará na virada do século XIX para o XX

The aim of this paper is to understand how authorities and writers, who published in local newspapers from late nineteenth to early twentieth century, built an idea of progress and development for the state of Pará. It is about understanding, on one hand, the connections between rural areas, the forest and the city of Belém and, on the other, the ideas of progress and development through agriculture. In order to understand such connections, the article discusses three important problems: the "excesses" of nature, agricultural education and rural sanitation.

Comércio, política e ciência nas exposições internacionais: o Brasil em Turim, 1911. Parte 1

The article analyses the participation of the Brazilian State of Pará at the International Exposition of Industry and Work in Turin, 1911. The Pará exhibition brought together especially products from the extractivism and may be characterized by its scientific discourse, materialized mainly by the presence of a renowned scientist in the organizing committee, the Swiss botanist Jacques Huber (1867-1914), then Director of the Goeldi Museum in Belém. The reasons to highlight science in the Pará exhibition and for the involvement of a scientist in a commercial event are studied through the following questions: the diplomatic strategies that took place in Turin; the role given to science in the organization of this world’s fair; and the dissonant forces in the representation of Brazil, noticeable on the difficulty of drawing up a national discourse and on the distance between a deeply unequal society and the image that was built of this same society. Travel Notes published in 1874, seeking to reflect how the foreign relations were important during this period to set their own region, your country, yourself, increasing its "world-consciousness".
