The mean values found for DMFT and deft were 6.5 and 5.4 respectively. Although the region is very primitive, this high prevalence may be linked to several factors, among which is the urban influence, mainly through the use of sugar, on food habits in such a way as fundamentally to alter the diet of the amazonian population.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Determinação de mercúrio total em amostras de água, sedimento e sólidos em suspensão de corpos aquáticos por espectrofotometria de absorção atômica com gerador de vapor a frio(1996-06) VIEIRA, José Luiz Fernandes; PASSARELLI, Miriam MeyerThe use of metallic mercury in the extraction and concentration of gold causes the discarding of tons of this metal in the environment, leading to a considerable increase in the natural levels of the same and the contamination of the surrounding areas. Thus it is extremely important to monitor the presence of this metal in various sectors of the environment with a view aiming to previnting human exposure to excessive concentrations which can result in serious episodes of mercury poisoning. It is also important to estimate the possibility of river sediments becoming potential sources of contamination of human beings. The determination of total mercury was undertaken by using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry. River waters, as well as sediments and suspended solids were used as samples for the standardization of the analytical procedure. Later on, this method was tested on samples originating in gold mining areas for the purpose of assessing its validity.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Reflexões sobre o paradigma holístico e holismo e saúde(1996-08) TEIXEIRA, ElizabethThis article is a reflection about the holistic paradigm and their constitution in the science compass. It was ascertained from the analysed works that this theoretical referencial is used by nurses, and that some studies developed introduce significative results from these professionals.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Avaliação da tolerabilidade e do controle de ciclo de dois contraceptivos orais de baixa dose: estudo comparativo aberto(Universidade Federal do Pará, 1998-06) BARACAT, Edmund Chada; BARBOSA, Ione Cristina; MELO, Nilson Roberto de; PINHO NETO, João Sabino de Lima; TOMAZ, Geraldez; CAMPOS, Altamiro Araujo; HYPPOLITO, Sylvia B.; MUSSIELO, Rafael; NASSAR, RosivalArtigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Efeitos do uso crônico do difosfato de primaquina sobre a prenhez da rata(Universidade Federal do Pará, 1998-10) AZEVEDO, Eliel Nina de; SANTOS, Alessandra Silva; MENDES, Eliane Terezinha Rocha; SIMÕES, Manuel de Jesus; KULAY JÚNIOR, LuizPurpose: to evaluate the chronic action of primaquine diphosphate on the pregnancy of female albino rats. Methods: sixty pregnant female rats, separated into six groups, were used. Group I received daily, by gavage, 1 ml of distilled water from day zero to the 20th day of pregnancy (control group). The female rats of the other groups also received daily, by gavage, during the same period of time the volume of 1 ml containing gradually concentrated primaquine diphosphate solution: 0.25 mg/kg, group II; 0.50 mg/kg, group III; 0.75 mg/kg, group IV; 1.5 mg/kg, group V and 3.0 mg/kg, group VI. The maternal weights were considered on day zero and on the 7th, 14th and 20th days of pregnancy, when the matrices were sacrificed. Results: the results showed that primaquine diphosphate, in the used doses, did not interfere with none of the following variables: maternal weight, newborn weight, medium individual weight of fetuses, weight of the group of placentas and medium individual weight of the placentas, implantation number, number of placentas and number of fetuses, when compared with the control group. Also there was no case of reabsorption, malformation, maternal mortality or intrauterine death, in any of the studied groups. Conclusion: in the conditions of the study there were no contraindications for the continuous use of primaquine diphosphate during the pregnancy of the female rat.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Perfil de utilização de repositores protéicos nas academias de Belém, Pará(Universidade Federal do Pará, 1999-04) ARAÚJO, Ana Cláudia Matos de; SOARES, Yone de Nazareth GonçalvesThe presente study was carried out in the first semester of 1996, aiming to evaluate users of academies in Belém, Pará, Brazil. Beyond vast bibliographic research about the energetic and proteic metabolism, sportsmen’s nutritional necessities and supplementation with protein and amino acids, a field research was carried out with the purpose of tracing the profile of utilization of nutritional suplements with emphasis on protein and amino acid products, considering sex, age and period of physical activity practice. The research involved a sample of 18 academies and 388 interviewees; 103 of then (27%) used some kind of supplementation and 45 of these (44%) used protein supplements. Among the justifications given for the option of using the supplementation, the “professional indication” stood out from the others. Comparison with technical list existing in these units, in which only 4 of the 18 academies included in the sample had nutritionists or doctors, suggests that the utilization of these products by physical activities practitioners may be inadequate.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Um olhar diferente sobre a Branca de Neve e os sete anões: um recurso didático sobre o funcionamento mental(Universidade Federal do Pará, 1999-06) SILVA, Waldine Viana da; SILVA, Antônio Carlos Vieira daIn this study we emphasise the personality caractheristics, tryingto amplify the mental functioning matter facing the richness of a work based on a tale. However, it only demonstrates on mucosal tunic, the index of lesion and morphologic preserved cells, but not the index of viable functional cells, present in the sample. With this purpose, a colorimetric method was used, employing Methyl Thiazolyl Blue (MTT). The experiment was conducted in 30 Wistar male rats, distributed in 3 groups: Group Control (GC), Group ischemia and reperfusion-1 (GIR-1) and Group ischemia and reperfusion-3 (GIR-3), with 10 animals each. The Groups GIR-1 and GIR-3 were submitted to intestinal ischemia for 30 minutes by a false ligature of superior mesenteric artery, and submitted to euthanasia after 1 and 3 days of reperfusion, when material was picked for absorbency and histological procedures. It was observed a smaller proportion of viable cells and a larger degree of mucosal lesion in GIR-3 group (p<0.05), while GC group was the one with the larger proportion of viable cells and smaller degree of the mucosal injury (p<0.05). This way we concluded that MTT is as effective and reliable as the histological study at evaluating alterations produced by intestinal ischemia-reperfusion.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Efeitos do uso crônico do tramadol sobre a prenhez da rata albina(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2001-03) AZEVEDO, Eliel Nina de; OLIVEIRA-FILHO, Ricardo Martins de; SIMÕES, Manuel de Jesus; KULAY JÚNIOR, Luiz; SANTOS, Alexandra SilvaArtigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Detection of Helicobacter pylori in gastric cancer(2001-10) PEREIRA, Luana Paredes Leite de Barros; WAISBERG, Jaques; ANDRÉ, Eduardo Antonio; ZANOTO, Arnaldo; MENDES JÚNIOR, João Paulo; SOARES, Heloísa PradoBackground and Objectives — Considering the high prevalence of stomach cancer in the northern region of Brazil and the recognized relationship between chronic gastric inflammation caused by Helicobacter pylori, and its carcinogenic potential, the objective we had with this study was to investigate the presence of the microorganism in macro and microscopic presentations of neoplasm in different regions of the stomach, and in non-malignant lesions concomitant to the adenocarcinoma in patients originating from the metropolitan area of Belém (State of Pará, Brazil). Methods - Examinations were made on 172 patients divided into two groups: group I, formed by 75 patients with gastric carcinoma, and group II, formed by 97 patients with mild enanthematic gastritis, considered control group. The diagnosis was obtained during endoscopic examination and the respective biopsy. Gastric neoplasms were classified macroscopically in accordance with Borrmann's classification, and microscopically in accordance with Laurén's classification. In group I, 54 patients were male and 21 female while in group II, 22 patients were male and 75 female. The average age in group I was 61.2 years (range 27 to 86 years), while in group II it was 37.5 years (range 16 to 69 years). Thin sections were prepared and stained using the hematoxylin-eosin method. In the Helicobacter pylori research, the modified Gram stain was utilized. Statistical analysis was done by utilizing the chi-squared (c 2) test, Mann-Whitney test (U), and Fisher's exact test. Results - The results showed the detection of Helicobacter pylori were significantly greater in patients with mild enanthematic gastritis than in patients with gastric carcinoma. The presence of Helicobacter pylori in patients with gastric carcinoma and mild enanthematic gastritis was significantly greater in the antral region than in other gastric regions. Helicobacter pylori detection in patients with gastric carcinoma did not present a significant difference in relation to the macroscopic aspect of the tumor either intestinal or diffuse histological types. Conclusions - These data suggest the presence of the bacteria is predominant in the antral region and it does not show relation with the macroscopic types or histological intestinal or diffuse types of gastric carcinoma.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Flavonóides de Cissus verticillata e a atividade hipoglicemiante do chá de suas folhas(2002) BARBOSA, Wagner Luiz Ramos; SANTOS, Wallace Raimundo Araujo dos; PINTO, Lucianna do Nascimento; TAVARES, Isabel Cecília de CastroCissus verticillata, a Vitaceae very used in the traditional medicine in Pará and Minas Gerais State – Brazil, was investigated in order to validate its indication for the hyperglycaemia control. The aqueous extract reduces the normal glycaemia of male white Wistar rats in about 19.5 %. The hypoglycaemic effect of this extract could be related to the flavonoids found in the preparation. Luteolin, Kaempferol and Luteolin-3'-sulphate could be isolated from the aqueous extract after acid hydrolysis. CissusArtigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Implementação da estratégia de ensino-aprendizagem à família de paciente crônico(2002-02) FREITAS, Maria Célia de; SANTANA, Mary Elizabeth deThis study aims at implementing the teaching-learning strategy for families of patients in chronic conditions. It considers the importance of evaluating the needs and abilities of family members in order to prepare them to manage that situation appropriately, as well as to be able to provide adequate home care. A diagnostic evaluation of a family member/caretaker was conducted during the hospitalization of a patient with congestive cardiac insufficiency. During the diagnosis "knowledge deficit" was identified. Thus, a teaching plan was elaborated for such caretaker with the purpose of preparing him/her for home care. During implementation, formative evaluations were conducted with the purpose of learning about the efficacy of the strategies employed and the summative in the patient's home. The importance of nurses' resorting to the teaching-learning strategy in order to guide the family member/caretaker in the process of caring for people with chronic conditions was certified. The aim is promoting life, in spite of the disease, since the quality of such care will prevent aggravating recurrence and consequent re-hospitalizations.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Paciente laringectomizado total: validação das características definidoras para o diagnóstico de enfermagem comunicação prejudicada(2002-12) SANTANA, Mary Elizabeth de; SAWADA, Namie OkinoThis study aimed at validating the defining characteristics of the nursing diagnosis "hindered communication" for patients submitted to total laryngectomy. The diagnostic content validation model (DCV) proposed by FEHRING (1986, 1987) was used. Data were collected by means of a Likert-type frequency scale consisting of twenty-six defining characteristics from the list of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) and three fictional defining characteristics. Twenty-six clinical and faculty nurses participated in the study. The results showed a total DCV of 0.84 for larger defining characteristics and a total DCV of 0.69 for smaller defining characteristics. It was recognized that the study validated the defining characteristics preconized by NANDA for the nursing diagnosis "hindered communication".Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Alcalóides de Aspidosperma auriculatum Standl(2003) BARBOSA, Wagner Luiz Ramos; TAVARES, Isabel Cecília de Castro; SOARES, Daniela CristinaSpecies from genus Aspidosperma show the presence of indol alkaloids. From Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco Schlecht quebracacidine was obtained1, from A. olivaceum. Schmutz and Hunziker2 isolated olivacine, among others substances. This work reports the determination of the chromatographic profile of alkaloid fractions from Aspidosperma auriculatum, by Thin Layer Chromatography and High Performance Liquid Chromatography. At the Brazilian state Pará this plant species has the vernacular name carapanaúba and is traditionally indicated to heal fever and others affections and also malaria. The plant material - stem bark - was extracted with hydrochloridric acid 5%. Three principal alkaloid fractions were extracted at pH 7, pH 8 and pH 11, which were analysed in suitable systems showing characteristic profilesArtigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Documentação e valorização da fitoterapia tradicional Kayapó nas aldeias A'Ukre e Pykanu - Sudeste do Pará(2003) BARBOSA, Wagner Luiz Ramos; PINTO, Lucianna do NascimentoIn the beginning of 1996 researchers from the program Poverty and Environment in Amazon visited the Kayapó villages A'Ukre and Pykanu in the southern of Pará State - Brazil These expeditions also aimed to rescue the kayapó phytotherapeutical tradition in the villages and to identify plant species with pharmaceutical potential. Six shamans were interviewed with translation three at each village. The shaman presented fiftythree different plants from, which twenty had elucidated their botanical identification on basis of photographyArtigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Impacto da farinha de mandioca fortificada com ferro aminoácido quelato no nível de hemoglobina de pré-escolares(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2003-03) TUMA, Rahilda Conceição Ferreira Brito; YUYAMA, Lucia Kiyoko Ozaki; AGUIAR, Jaime Paiva Lopes; MARQUES, Hedylamar OliveiraObjective: The impact of the cassava flour fortified with iron amino acid chelate was evaluated in 80 pre-scholars of a Philanthropic Unit of Manaus, state of Amazonas, randomly distributed in four groups of 20 children each, for a period of 120 days. Methods: Cassava flour was used without fortification (group zero) or fortified with 1, 2 and 3mg of Fe/day, corresponding respectively to 5, 10 and 15g of flour/day, which were given to the children at lunch time on weekdays. The equivalent amount was previously distributed to their families for flour intake also during the weekends. In the beginning and at the end of the experiment the children’s nutritional status was evaluated, being adopted the cutoff point <-2 Z-scores as a discriminating limit between eutrophy/ malnutrition, in agreement with the World Health Organization criteria, as well as being established as a cutoff point for the occurrence of iron deficiency anemia a hemoglobin rate of less than 11g/dL. Results: At the end of this study, children recovered from chronic malnutrition, and a significant increase (p <5%) of the hemoglobin rates, independently of iron concentration, from 11.4±0.9g/dL to 12.2±0.8g/dL, was observed in all individuals. The formerly anemic children who received cassava flour fortified with 2mg of Fe/day were fully recovered at the end of the research, demonstrating a good performance of this group in relation to the others. Conclusion: A double-blind study is suggested for the consolidation of the recommendation of cassava flour fortified with iron in the prevention of iron deficiency anemia in pre-scholars of the Amazon region.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) A criança e o adolescente com problemas do desenvolvimento no ambulatório de pediatria(2003-06) MIRANDA, Luci Pfeiffer; RESEGUE, Rosa Miranda; FIGUEIRAS, Amira Consuêlo de MeloOBJECTIVE: to review the literature on outpatient care of children and adolescents with developmental disabilities, focusing on prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, outcomes and rehabilitation. SOURCES OF DATA: search of Medline and Lilacs databases; publications of scientific committees of institutions for children with special needs; and outpatient care reports of reference centers for the treatment of children and adolescents with mental and developmental disabilities. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: this population presents health problems associated with the basic pathology and its consequences in addition to the usual problems of the specific age group. The etiology of developmental disorders and the main characteristics of each type of disability are discussed. Special attention is given to outpatient pediatric care. CONCLUSIONS: the most recent study of the Brazilian population, performed in 2000, showed that 14.5% of this population presented some type of developmental deficiency. Therefore, developmental problems are one of the most prevalent health problems among children and adolescents. Consequently, pediatricians need to be prepared to evaluate and identify factors that may influence normal children development. Pediatricians are responsible for prevention, early diagnosis and coordination of the multidisciplinary treatment of these patients in addition to basic medical assistance, which is essential to guarantee the patients' good quality of life.
