Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Financiamento internacional para o setor agroindustrial no Mato Grosso: uma oportunidade para conservação?(2008-06) STICKLER, Claudia; ALMEIDA, Oriana Trindade deOne of the major trends linked to the process of globalization is the expansion of agro-industry into the humid tropics. Although agro-industry is an important source of income for Brazil , it is also leading to the displacement of local populations and extensive clearing of native vegetation. In this context, we focus on a second trend resulting from globalization in which financial institutions have demonstrated increasing concern with environmental and social responsibility, notably through the inclusion of environmental and social conditions on loans to the agricultural sector. In this article, we assess the potential for this type of economic instrument to help reduce the negative impacts of agroindustrial expansion through the lens of two International Finance Corporation loans to Brazil ’s Grupo Maggi. We also examine how the different actors who are shaping this debate (non-governmental organizations, industries, the finance sector, government) can best help to realize this potential.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Pecuária e desmatamento: uma análise das principais causas diretas do desmatamento na Amazônia(2009-04) RIVERO, Sérgio Luiz de Medeiros; ALMEIDA, Oriana Trindade de; SILVA, Saulo Cristiano Ávila da; OLIVEIRA, Wesley Pereira deCattle Ranching is the main causes of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon region. This paper analyses the proximate causes of deforestation using linear regressions with panel data. The model evaluates the contribution of the main land uses for deforestation from 2000 to 2006. Deforestation data from INPE-PRODES, number of heads of cattle, and area of temporary and permanent crops from IBGE are the data used in the analysis (782 municipalities). The result of the regressions shows that deforestation is strongly associated with cattle ranching. Soybean plantations are also strongly related with deforestation in the model. This trend is reinforced by the growth in demand for meat in the domestic and international markets. To be effective in reducing deforestation rates, public policies must therefore act on the underlying causes of deforestation, reducing the forces that lead to its expansion on the area where deforestation is occurring.Artigo de Periódico Acesso aberto (Open Access) Sistemas agroindustriais integrados: uma análise por meio da entropia de informação(2000-06) PONTE, Marcos Ximenes; VAN DYNE, Donald L.Using the mathematical theory of the information, this article analyzes four agroindustry systems of bioenergy production: the industry of alcohol from sugar-cane in Brazil, the industry of corn alcohol and the industry of biodiesel in United States, besides the industry of manioc flour from the Amazonian. Based on an important group of empiric information, evaluations of energy efficiency for different organization levels of the systems are made.
