Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Avaliação da aprendizagem em língua inglesa no primeiro ano do ensino fundamental em escolas públicas do município de Castanhal (PA)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-06-27) BARBOSA, Emília Gomes; CUNHA, Myriam Crestian Chaves da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0057919162522146This study investigates the assessment practices in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language to Young Learners (LEC) in the first year of primary education in public schools in the city of Castanhal, PA. The research analyze which guidelines are contained in official municipal documents with regards to teaching and assessment in LEC, to describe the assessment practices developed by teachers in this context, to analyze the integration of these practices with LEC's teaching and learning goals, and to indicate pointers to make the assessment of learning practices more effective, theoretically and methodologically. To achieve the proposed objectives, a qualitative documentary study was conducted. We analyzed the official documents that guide teaching and assessment in LEC, 220 student development reports, which are recommended assessment tool for this school level, as well as interviews and questionnaires given to 14 teachers working in this context. The theoretical framework is based on the contributions of Cameron (2001), Strecht-Ribeiro (2005) and Scott and Ytreberg (1990) regarding the teaching and learning of LEC, as well as the discussion of some aspects of assessment of learning (HADJI, 1994, 2007; BONNIOL; VIAL, 2001; FERNANDES, 2009; PERRENOUD, 1999) and assessment of learning in LEC (MCKAY, 2006; IOANNOU-GEORGIOU 2011; SHAABAN, 2001). For data analysis, we used the Content Analysis technique (ROSA, 2013). The analysis results indicate a lack of coherence between the assessment practices and the teaching goals and principles in LEC. The data also reveal a lack of training for teaching, assessing and designing syllabus in LEC, combined with a known tendency to prioritize structural aspects in the teaching of foreign languages, instead of communicative activities. Finally, this study shows the need to promote other studies that investigate the assessment practices used in LEC, as well as the urgency to define official national guidelines for teaching and assessment that take into account the characteristics and needs of the children within this context.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A avaliação da compreensão leitora em espanhol língua estrangeira: análise de provas de vestibular(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2007-05-31) SÁEZ BENEYTEZ, María Freya; CUNHA, Myriam Crestian Chaves da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0057919162522146It aims to analyze in a quantitative e qualitative way the avaluation of Spanish as a Foreign Language reading comprehension in Northern Brazil University entrance examinations, to be able to prove the types of reading operations – and, therefore, of models – favored in the tests analyzed; to establish a relationship between the collected tests and their underlying didactic conceptions; to identify some problems in the test items based on a series of quality parameters; to analyze the validity of the selected tests; and to detect possible differences between the examinations elaborated by public and private Higher Education Institutions. This analysis demonstrates, on the one hand, a tendency to prioritize bottom-up reading models, with the subsequent valuation of low level cognitive operations and lexicalgrammatical aspects of language, as a consequence of a didactic reading conception based on a Structuralist approach. On the other hand, this study shows the existence of serious deficiencies in the University entrance examination items, which affect their validity.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Avaliação formativa na Licenciatura de Espanhol: autoavaliação e autorregulação em foco(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-05-21) NEYRA, Patricia; CUNHA, Myriam Crestian Chaves da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0057919162522146This paper discusses an experience with formative assessment focused on self-assessment and self-regulation in language competences and learning strategies. The research reported here aimed to identify what students of Bachelor of Spanish Foreign Language (S/FL) self-assess and self-regulate in their learning, what is the impact of the self-assessment and self-regulation effective in their communicative language competence and ability to learn and, finally; what are the educational activities that promote self-assessment and self-regulation of these competences. To achieve the proposed objectives, we chose to conduct an action research, which was developed in the subject Spanish Language III of the Bachelor’s degree in Spanish at the Federal University of Para (UFPA) - Campus Castanhal. The theoretical framework is based on authors like Allal (1986; 2007), Bonniol and Vial (2001), Perrenoud (2007), among others. For data analysis, it was noted how three students in the class dealt with the proposed formative activities during the course and it also was related their performance in the subject with their attitude regarding those activities. The results show that initially, the language competences were the most assessed and self-regulated objects by the students. However, as the learners were induced to think about other dimensions of foreign language learning, some of them began to include the metacognitive aspects in their self-assessments and self-regulations, which favored an improvement of their communicative language competence and their ability to learn. The formative activities that provided the most effective self-assessment and self-regulation were the self-assessment guideline, learning dairy, the development of communicative goals and assessment criteria, as well as situations involving self-assessment, co-assessment and mutual assessment practices.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Buscando significações na aprendizagem de inglês no ensino médio: uma experiência de fomento de autonomia(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009-04-24) NATIVIDADE, Elda Carla Barata; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312It presents the results of a research in the field of Language Teaching and Learning which aimed at developing students autonomy regarding their appropriation of English as a foreign language in a country school. The study was developed as an imposing need to make English learning meaningful and motivating to students in this school. Motivation was seen as an important element in the construction of this knowledge. The study relied on previous research by Brown e Jacob (apud WILLIAN et al, 2004) e Harmer (2001), and on motivation; and Holec (apud PAIVA, 2005), Dickinson (1994), Little (1991), Benson (2001), and Paiva (2007) on autonomy in foreign languages learning. Methodological guidelines were borrowed from Hadley (2004) and Viana (2007) and especially on how to conduct data collection, organization, and analysis in an action - research format. This study was conducted by he teacher-researcher, based on data collected by the author in her High School freshman class with twenty eight students enrolled in the evening class of a public school in São Francisco do Pará. The data analysis proved that a meaningful learning must have students‟ daily life as a starting point to any activity. It also proved that situations which demand students using the language in real contexts makes learning more meaningful to them at the same time that it fosters autonomy. The activity conducted for this study, called Posters‟ show, aimed at developing quality behavior in students towards learning because, taking autonomy as a background, students‟ daily life, their life experiences, and their responsibility towards the learning situation are far more important elements to experience than mastering grammar rules or even covering the complete content of each academic year. Results showed that positive outcomes because a change occurred in students perceptions on learning, evidencing that it is possible to enhance autonomous attitudes when proper guidance is given to students.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A compreensão e a produção oral nas aulas de FLE: os jogos teatrais como meio de comunicação(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2005-12-05) FERREIRA, Josiane da Silva; CUNHA, José Carlos Chaves da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3117544056791050Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) O efeito da instrução de estratégias de aprendizagem no desenvolvimento da produção oral de alunos de inglês da Universidade Federal do Pará: um estudo de caso(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2006-08-18) GAIGNOUX, Kelly Cristina Marques; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312It investigates the effect of the learning strategy instruction to the development of the speaking skill with a group from third level learners of English from Curso de Letras at the Federal University of Pará. This investigation aims at contributing to a better understanding of the issues involved in learning difficulties related to learners speaking performance in using a foreign language by suggesting that the explicit instruction of strategies can provide more effective learning. Hence, it offers teachers a new perspective from which to view these issues in the classroom. This study was carried out within the learning strategies framework which is based on cognitive theory of learning and development.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Emergência de comportamentos autônomos na aprendizagem da língua estrangeira a partir da interface da consciência linguageira e da motivação(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2012-05-27) BARROS, Silvia Helena Benchimol; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312This research explores the intersection of the studies of Language Awareness and the emergence of autonomous behaviors influenced by motivational factors in learners of English as a Foreign Language. Considering the relevance of explicit instruction of complex input and of Language Awareness, I observed that by using these principles, the teacher will foster the emergence of behaviors that lead learners to improve the control over their own learning. This way, the current study aims at verifying the correlation between language awareness, autonomy and motivation as an underpinning aspect. The theoretical basis of this study lies essentially on the contributions of: David Little (2010), Flavell (1976), Gillan Donmall (1991), Hawkings (2001), Peter Garret; Carl James (1991), Phil Benson (2001), Rutherford (1987), Van Lier (1991). Along with the bibliographical investigation, an action research has been carried out in order to understand the process of input comprehension by the adult learner, formulate hypothesis, and respect the enhanced classroom dynamic context for the final purpose of promoting improved learning. The observation and data collection took place at a sixth level English language classroom from the Foreign Language Courses at Federal University of Pará. The data from interviews, questionnaires, observations and Focus on Form activities have demonstrated that when a complex linguistic input was presented, both oral and written productions were hindered and there was less participation in conversational activities. I have also observed that the Focus on Form activities, explicitness, and reflections carried out by the employment of metalanguage have taken students closer to the solution of their problems and motivated them to search for different learning alternatives. The data have been crossed for analysis of the implications of Language Awareness on autonomous behaviors and motivation allowing reflections and meaningful insights for the solution of problems emerged in the unpredictable classroom context.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) O ensino de produção oral nos cursos de graduação em letras (inglês) de Belém-PA: uma abordagem por gêneros do discurso(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2008-03-07) BRANCO, Ewerton Lopes; CUNHA, José Carlos Chaves da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3117544056791050This dissertation aims to investigate the speaking production in English language in Letras undergraduation courses in Belém – Pa, under a perspective of discourse genres (Bakhtin, 1992; Bazerman, 2005). For that purpose, class observations were made in two colleges and the textbooks used in those groups were collected in order to compare the methodological proposals within the books and what is done in classroom in fact. They were analyzed focusing the speaking activities, if they have explicit or implicit the idea of discourse genre in their development and the treatment given to the oral language present in them. Also, questionnaires were applied to professors and students of the observed groups. The analysis of the data reveals that the notion of language as genre is yet insipient in the development of oral activities and there is a necessity of a variety of oral genres as object of study during the undergraduation course, once one of the only ones studied is the dialogue.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) O espanhol em Belém: atitudes e políticas lingüísticas(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2005) MARTINS, Nélia de Almeida; RAZKY, Abdelhak; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8153913927369006The presence of the Spanish language in Brazil in last the ten years, comes reaching a prestige never before seen. We also identified students goals and objectives in learning English. The principles of qualitative research were adopted to collect and analyze the data of this case study. The instruments used were questionnaires, self- verbal report protocols and field notes. Browns (1994) Felder and Solomans (1993) and Oxfords (2003) proposals provide rationale in order to classify learning styles. We also chose Oxfords theories (1990) to describe and classify learning strategies (2003). In order to make the foreign language learning (FLL) in public schools more effective, we describe two models of strategies based instruction which can be integrated into regular courses: Strategies-Based Instruction (SBI) by Cohen (1998) and Strategy Training Model by Oxford (1990). Results of this study describe the styles and strategies of a class of 8th graders of a Public School. We state that once these characteristics are identified, teacher and students can create learning situations which are more effective.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Estratégias de aprendizagem e autonomia na produção oral dos alunos de licenciatura intensiva em inglês(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2012-08-27) BELÉM, Breno de Campos; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312The present work aims at investigating in which way the students of Letters majoring in English, of an intensive course at Universidade Federal do Pará – Altamira, apprehend autonomous practices, making use of learning strategies to improve oral performance. When they come back to the academy, after the periods without classes, the students say they feel unable to have an effective oral participation during classes. Thus, when coming back to the university, after the periods without classes, the students feel incapable of participating effectively in class orally exposing their ideas. This way, the purpose of this research is to give instructions to the learners, so that they can improve their oral skills practices through the use of learning strategies. The methodology in this research is action research with a qualitative approach. The data were collected by means of narratives, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. Eight out of 24 students participated of this research. They were at the second year of the course. The data were collected during July and August, 2011 and January and February, 2012. The results showed that the strategies instruction was relevant to students so that they could become more aware and more proficient of the oral practice during and after the period without classes. In addition, some students began to use other strategies autonomously than those already used before. They also started teaching strategies to other learners. Some students revealed they remained with the use of the same strategies that they had already used.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Gêneros textuais acadêmicos e ensino da língua inglesa: um caminho para a motivação e a autonomia(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2008-12-19) RODRIGUES, Larissa Dantas; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312In the academic environment, when asked to write academic genres, the undergraduate students in general have difficulties related to their content and textual organization. Therefore, these reading and writing practices are in general inhibitors of motivation and autonomy. From this perspective, I developed an action research with students of the sixth semester of the English Letters Course at UFPA aiming to verify in which way the application of a pedagogical proposition composed of the appropriation, production and publication of academic genres can develop those undergraduate students’ motivation and autonomy. This research is based on the theories of motivation (DÖRNYEI, 2001; USHIODA, 1996), autonomy (BENSON, 2001; SCHARLE & SZABÓ, 2000), and textual genres in the socio-rhetorical perspective (SWALES, 1990; BAZERMAN, 2006). The results presented try to offer possibilities of a systematic teaching that prepares the undergraduate Letters student to a more motivating and autonomous text production. Moreover, after experiencing a meaningful application of genres, it is expected that those future teachers will deal more effectively with other genres in their classrooms.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Interação verbal e ensino de uma competência discursiva oral em turmas de francês língua estrangeira de Macapá(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009-09-30) GOMES, Ivanete Maria Souza dos Santos; CUNHA, José Carlos Chaves da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3117544056791050Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Investigando a influência das crenças de alunos do Curso de Letras da Universidade Federal do Pará sobre sua prontidão para a aprendizagem autônoma do inglês: um estudo de caso(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2007-06-26) NASCIMENTO, Cleuma de Almeida Matos; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312This study aims at investigating how the beliefs about English as a foreign language of four undergraduate students of Letras course at UFPA influence, in a positive or negative way, their readiness for autonomous learning. The principles of this research are qualitative with the use of narratives, a questionnaire and interviews for data collecting and further cross validation. By analysing the beliefs and their relation with autonomous learning we concluded that teachers and students can together construct a new understanding of the teaching and learning process, as well as they can better comprehend their roles in it. This awareness is one of the foundations of learner autonomy.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Leitura e gêneros textuais em livros didáticos de língua inglesa do Ensino Médio(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2006-08-25) ARAÚJO, Marcus de Souza; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312This study is aimed at analyzing the question of written comprehension activities from the perspective of the approach of genre on English textbooks on High School level. Therefore, it intends to discuss the ways in which reading activities work genre in a communicative way. For this, we examine genres, the types of activities and types of written comprehension questions present in two textbooks. Futhermore, it is focused on investigating to what extent the reading strategies have been worked, explicit or implicitly, as a tool that facilitates the construction of meanings from the texts. The research methodology underlying this study was based on a focused description (Larsen-Freeman & Long, 1991) that selected two textbooks in a single volume. These English books were published in 2004 and used in private schools in Belem. This research was based on the theoretical framework of genre (Bakhtin [1952-53] 2003; Swales, 1990, 1992 and 1998; Marcuschi, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005; Ramos, 2004 and others); on the teaching of English reading (Dias, 2002 , 2005; Grabe & Stoller, 2001, 2002; Koda, 2005 among others) and on the use of the English textbooks (Day & Park, 2005; Garinger, 2001; Souza, 1999 and others). In addition, this study has its basis on the National Curriculum Parameters for the teaching of reading in a foreign language on High School level (PCNEM-LE, 2000, 2002, 2004). It is also verified that textbooks do not favor the activities in a communicative way for the construction of meaning in written comprehension, and besides the textbooks do not take genres as teaching tools. This construction is conjured by translation (or copy) of information of the text. The data analysis results still show the implicit use of reading strategies, without an awareness that favors the search of more critical and significant ways to help student?s learning. These results have pedagogical implications especially because it urges the opening for new spaces in the Brazilian educational scenario. This way, the use of these textbooks can be redefined and reflected in the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) O livro didático e o fomento da autonomia na aprendizagem da língua inglesa(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2011-05-11) FONSECA, Maria Amélia Carvalho; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312Observing that frequently adult students are very dependent on their teachers and show an enormous passivity relating to their learning, I realized the importance of carrying out a study that could stimulate autonomous behaviors in their learning process and to do so the textbook could be used. From this perspective, I identified the need to develop an action research, which allows the use of our daily classroom practice to collect and analyze data, having as subjects my own students. This study aims at investigating how the textbook could be used in order to foster learning autonomy. For this, it attempts to recognize in a textbook used by adult students in an English language course kinds of activities that could foster autonomy, it tries to determine conditions to adapt some of these textbook activities and it analyses the effect of those activities on students’ autonomy. This research is based on the theories of textbooks, of classroom dynamics, including the activities performed during classes, and on the concepts of autonomy, comprehending the role of the autonomous student and the role of the teacher in the autonomization process. This way, it was based on authors such as Skierso (1991), Dickinson (1994), Richards (1994), Cunningsworth (1995), Scrivener (1998), Little (1999), Cotterall (2000), Graves (2000), Scharle e Szabó (2000), Benson (2001), Crookes e Chaudron (2001), Nunan (2001a, 2001b, 2005), Tomlinson e Masuhara (2005), Brown (2007), Harmer (2001, 2007), Magno e Silva (2003, 2008, 2009), among others. This study is relied greatly on the previous research by Scharle e Szabó (2000) which was able to provide means to identify the activities that could contribute to foster learner autonomy. The data analysis results show that it is possible to use the textbook as a tool to foster learner autonomy and that the way the teacher uses it determines if and how this will happen. The results show that the extra activities used in the classroom and the evaluation of these activities by the students contributed to a change in the students’ behavior toward their learning, the development of autonomous attitudes on the students, and the indication of students´ wishes to carry on the autonomous process. This is evidence that it is possible to give students conditions that favor their autonomous learning behaviors.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Materiais didáticos e ensino do oral: práticas de sala de aula de francês língua estrangeira em turmas de 5ª Série(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2008-03-07) PIMENTEL, Jocilene Costa; CUNHA, José Carlos Chaves da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3117544056791050Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Motivação e autonomia no ensino e aprendizagem da habilidade de escrita em inglês como língua estrangeira: os gêneros textuais do Orkut e as suas interfaces interacionais(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2010-10-30) DUARTE, Francisco Ednardo Barroso; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312In the educational context of teaching and learning of foreign languages, basic education or academic levels, writing activities are usually neglected at the expense of the great attention given to oral skills. Teachers often complain about difficulties and challenges they face to arouse students‟ interest related to writing activities. Moreover, we realize that students also complain about the treatment which is given to writing ability in the classroom, being uninterested and demotivated throughout the production of these activities. Therefore, this paper aims at discussing, reflecting and analyzing how this skill has been treated over the years and it proposes the genre-based approach in order to motivate and foster the autonomy of students majoring in Letras, English Language at the Universidade Federal do Pará, Campus Bragança. This approach is based on the use of e-genres in the social networking site Orkut.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Motivação e representação cultural no ensino e aprendizagem de inglês como língua estrangeira dos alunos da Licenciatura em Letras da UFPA(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2009-08-25) VIDAL, Claudia Valéria França; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312In the last years cultural issues have gotten more attention in the field of language teaching and learning. Once didactic books are among the main supports in foreign language teaching and learning process, the cultural representations these materials present may influence inlearners beliefs and attitudes in relation to the target language and, consequently, in their motivation to learn it. It is understood that culture encompasses a range of different aspects, however, analyzing the didactic book of English as a foreign language Touchstone, we observed that the cultural samples presented in this material refer basically to historical and geographical aspects and touristic information. We also observed that in relation to the contact with the culture of the target language, the learners of the discipline Anglophone Cultures may have varied attitudes. Thus, this research presents reflections about the considerable limitation of cultural representation in the didactic book analyzed, taking as main focus the extent in which it affects learner’s motivation. Besides, this dissertation presents reflections about how the other’s culture may be approached in order to enhance the perception of his ones’ own culture.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Os componentes visuais no ensino-aprendizagem da leitura em inglês: um estudo dos aspectos semiótico-discursivos em manuais de informática, no contexto do ensino superior(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2006-08-25) FERNANDES, Edwiges Conceição de Souza; SILVA, Walkyria Alydia Grahl Passos Magno e; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6129530461830312The purpose of this stucty was to reflect upon the teaching of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), focusing on reading, as well as to help readers with the construction of meaning through the use of visual components. Having our theoretical basis centered mainly on Swales (1990): Soares (1993): Bronckart (1999); Joly (2002); Santaella (1983, 2000); Magno e Silva (2002, 2004); and Field (2004), we carried out a descriptive study of the semiotic-discursive features of computer users manuals, focused on the use of images. Therefore, data was collected and pedagogical proceclures were described based on the observations taken in a group of undergraduate ESP students of the Computer Networks Course at Faculdade de Tecnologica da Amazônia (FAZ) a technological college in Belém. Our action-research also aimed at investigating to what extent the non-verbal elements can influence readers in their reading choices; how these elements can be used to lead readers to meaning durring all the phases of lhe reading process (pre/ while / post reading); and the importance of the visual components in the reading of softwares manuals. The data analysis results have shown that the visual components are excellent tools, when associated with words and used appropriately. Such procedures can incentive and ease the reading processing, especiailly in contexts in which lhe participants are not proficient enough in lhe target language.
