Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) “Beatriz era mais fêmea que mulher”: feminilidade e masculinidade pela imprensa de Belém (1940)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2022-09-27) MOREIRA, Jessica Maria Pastana; CANCELA, Cristina Donza; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8393402118322730In this work we will try to analyze the speeches about femininity and masculinity, using the articles from the newspapers from Belém and other capitals, which reported and updated their constituents daily with information about the crimes, imprisonment and death of a woman named Beatriz da Conceição, during 1940s. The society of the time defined spaces and behaviors for women and men, from which they could be in the order or disorder line, according to values and conducts. So, using control mechanisms - medical and legal guidelines - in order to keep an eye on the subjects and their bodies, the speeches about feminine and masculine standards were daily disseminated through the newspapers. It was so important to follow the imposed rules that the newspapers of large or small circulation - Folha Vespertina, Folha do Norte, O Estado do Pará, A Província do Pará, A Vanguarda, and O Liberal - when reporting the proceedings about Beatriz, brought in their narratives partial perspectives, value judgments about what was allowed or condemnable to women and men. And in this discursive dynamics about the standards in the public and private areas - woman of modesty, mother, prostitute, working man, murderer, and others - the complexity of the subjects allowed us to understand the multiple femininities and masculinities, considering the social markers of the individuals, also going through issues related to sexuality, crimes, honor, morality and violence.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) O caso de Klaus Keller: homossexualidades, narrativas populares e morte pela imprensa paraense (Belém-Pará, 1983-1990)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-04-30) BRITO NETO, Pedro Antonio de; CANCELA, Cristina Donza; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8393402118322730In 1983, in the city of Belém-PA, the death of a homosexual known as Klaus Keller took over the pages of the Pará press, a death that would be revisited throughout the 80s. This narrative would be exposed in the pages of newspapers during the period of the "second wave" of the Brazilian homosexual movement and in the context of the process of re-democratization of the Brazilian state, after the Civil-Military Dictatorship (1964-1985). This led to a more critical press, with judgments condemning the actions of the police in the case, as well as explicit judgments about the victim's sexuality. However, on the other hand, there was a demand for the case to be solved, considering that Klaus was a homosexual of explicit sexuality and well-known in Belém. The Província do Pará, O Liberal and Diário do Pará were the main press outlets in Pará that wrote his story. In order to understand this publication, I used the concepts of popular and/or sensationalist press, both to understand the ways in which they disseminated news and the way in which they sold it. In addition, it was noted that this story could lead to a debate on bio-politics and necropolitics, considering state control and micro-powers over the sexual and racial identities present in the narratives. That said, this dissertation started from the present by traveling to the past, and found similar ends there. In other words, the deaths of homosexuals in the present turned out to be similar. In other words, the deaths of homosexuals in the present were similar to those in the past. In this work with press sources, it was found that the discourse has changed little, and the murders as well.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) O Diário das trans: representações de mulheres trans e travestis no Diário do Pará (1980-1990)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2023-10-05) NASCIMENTO, Júlio Ferro Silva da Cunha; CANCELA, Cristina Donza; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8393402118322730The core of this investigation lies in the growing queer historiography, examining the representations of trans women and travestis in the newspaper "Diário do Pará" in the 1980s, a decade considered pivotal in shaping identities and gender expressions deemed deviating from heterocisnormativity. With the end of censorship under the military regime, pharmaceutical revolutions, and media interest, the newspapers point to a "fad" surrounding the figures of travestis, transsexuals, transformists, and other subjects categorized amid terminological and identity shifts, giving rise to constant social, economic, and ethnic tensions between media representation and the represented subjects. Therefore, as a theoretical and methodological approach, the present research employs queer theory, which aligns with Foucauldian notions of power and discourse as practice. Thus, in addition to a “against the grain” intention of the periodical sources, this study problematizes the strategies of control and resistance within regional media discourses concerning the mediatization of the bodies and experiences of trans women and travestis. This allows for an understanding of how transfeminine representation is diverse, marked by ambiguity, presented as a source of both physical and symbolic violence, where this ambiguity is presented as an essential factor for the fascination with transfeminine individuals in sections covering shows, criminal cases, international affairs, and politics.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Entre o prazer e o pecado: inquisição, sodomia e corpo a partir do caso de Frei Lucas de Sousa no Grão-Pará (1652 - 1663)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-08-29) ARAÚJO JUNIOR, Adomiran Moreira de; GUZMÁN, Décio Marco Antônio de Alencar; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0656841754619406; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3219-4404This dissertation aims to analyze the proceedings originating from the nefarious acts performed by Friar Lucas de Sousa in the second half of the 17th century in the city of Belém do Grão-Pará, in the then State of Maranhão. The investigations seek to problematize the body from a sexual and historical perspective, relating the understanding of medicine and religion about the sexuality of the human body, specifically the body that commits the “sin” of sodomy, in this research, the sodomy is the sexual practice between males, which in the inquisitorial lexicon, is called “perfect sodomy.” The proceedings of Friar Lucas and his accomplices also allow for the exploration of the Mercedarian Friar's own conceptions of his body in comparison to the female body. The primary sources are the inquisitorial processes, however beyond the Tribunal of the Holy Office, we use sources such as the Bible, Father Rafael Bluteau’s dictionary, chronicles, and treatises.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Envelhecimento: corpo, saúde, sexualidade e gênero (Belém-PA, 1920-1930)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-02-20) SANTANA, Breno dos Santos; CAMPOS, Ipojucan Dias; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0380400211532063The dissertation discusses the representations of human aging in Belém do Pará in the first decades of the 20th century through the analysis of texts present in magazines illustrated illustrations that circulated in the capital of Pará, such as “A Semana”, “Belém Nova”, “Pará-Doctor". Accordingly, the debates sought to understand how the process of aging could be interpreted and experienced by the historical subjects of belenense period on screen. It is understood that, due to numerous social inequalities, there was a universe of many disputes related to the meanings given to aging, after all, being old would sometimes mean admiration and respect, sometimes misfortune and rejection, it all depended on the position occupied by those who spoke and those who were the target of the speech. As part of these arrangements, stigmas related to the body, health and sexual fitness; However, these interpretative sets spoke of their own idealizations around a young, modern and developed Brazilian society, at the same time, indicated processes of exclusion compared to what was desired, mainly due to the discursive core intellectual, at the center of which the arguments focused on the “action of time on bodies humans” were heavily produced.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) “Equilíbrio precário”: corpo, gênero e família em Bragança/Pará (1916-1940)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-03-20) CAMPOS, Alessandra Patricia de Oliveira Dias; CANCELA, Cristina Donza; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8393402118322730This work aims to analyze how representations, practices and values were woven to the female body in Bragantina society between the years 1916 and 1940. In this sense, the problem was based on the view that the various characters involved in sexual crimes were women who with their experiences posed dangers to the balance of hegemonic family and social relations and Therefore, they should be watched so that they do not use their body as a place of exercise of power. To this end, the analysis started from the cross-study of discourses present in sixty-three judicial cases, nine medical and legal works, the Penal Codes of 1890 and 1940, the Civil Code of 1916, the Code of Postures of Bragança, in addition to the periodicals Cidade de Bragança, O Cidadão and Revista Bragança Ilustrada, which circulated in the proposed period. The sources allowed access to daily life, to loving relationships, to the various values that residents of the Bragantina region and representatives of the legal elaborated on body, sexuality, family, honor, morality, work and leisure, for example. Based on values such as work, family, honor and morality, the investigations showed that the bodies, behaviors, habits, interests and desires of women became the core of the concerns of the state, society and men when the subjects were morality, sexuality and appropriate family constitution. However, despite the surveillance, control and restrictions that women were subjugated in the period studied, many were not willing to conform their bodies, their interests and needs to the moralizing and disciplinary discourses that intended to imprison them.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Feminismo do Extremo Norte: trajetórias e reivindicações do Departamento Paraense pelo Progresso Feminino (Belém/PA, 1931-1937)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2023-12-15) REDRIGUES, Bárbara Leal; CAMPOS, Ipojucan Dia; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0380400211532063The dissertation aims to analyze the trajectories and demands of the Paraense Department for Female Progress (DPPF), in Belém, between 1931 and 1937. Specifically, its central argument is the formation and characterization of an extreme-northern feminism, based on diversity and the particularities of the group and its members. Understand it in its complexity, based on the strategies employed, the challenges faced and the internal diversities, in addition to problematizing the themes propagated and the rights claimed. State branch in Pará of the Brazilian Federation for Female Progress (FBPF), a feminist organization from Rio de Janeiro, the group from Pará presented similar characteristics to the parent institution and local singularities, in accordance with the experiences and opportunities experienced, defining an Extreme Feminism North. The period marks the years of greatest activity and publicity of the Department, from its foundation in 1931 until the political restructuring with the installation of the New State, in 1937, which caused the weakening and emptying of national feminist mobilizations. In this way, the movements of the DPPF at multiple levels, national/local and individual/collective, are put into perspective. With this in mind, the research seeks to undertake a political micro-history of Belenese feminists, represented in the Paraense Department, by analyzing the socio-political configurations, choices and ambiguities in the experiences and perceptions of DPPF members. Based on the critical cross-referencing of documents, mainly newspapers and correspondence, the group’s participation in national campaigns was identified, with emphasis on the moments of legislative reformulation, the expansion and consolidation of women’s rights: the Electoral Code (1932) and the National Constituent Assembly (1933/1934). At the same time, with their local activities and demands, in the consolidation and propagation of feminism in the capital of Pará, the individuality of the members is highlighted, through their feminist, political and professional writings and actions. These issues become intrinsic to the collective, as they demand the triad of feminism – voting, education and work – linked to their demands and other axes pleaded; demonstrating the feminist diversity in the composition of its members, the themes demanded and the conflicts experienced.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) O flagelado é o flagelo? Migração cearense e epidemias de varíola em Belém (1877-1915)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-02-26) SILVA, Julia Rafaela Silva da; VIEIRA JÚNIOR, Antonio Otaviano; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6764908679902300This research aims to critically analyze the relationship between migration from the State of Ceará and smallpox epidemics in Belém, in the State of Pará, Brazil, from the second half of the 19th century to the early 20th century. The study seeks to contextualize the discourse of medical authorities and the press on the subject, attempting to unveil the reasons that led these entities to consider individuals from Ceará responsible for the smallpox epidemics. The fragility of these accusations, lacking substantiation, serves as a starting point to comprehend the connection between Ceará migrants and the smallpox epidemics that occurred in Belém during the Belle Époque. The interest in this topic arose from the observation of a certain consensus in the produced discourses, with significant alignment in the government authorities statements, doctors, and the press. This alignment resonated in the historiographical production addressing smallpox epidemics in Belém from the late 19th century to the early 20th century as will be shown later, with Arthur Vianna's thesis from the early 20th century thrived, that was the prevailing approach, becoming commonplace to explain the origin of smallpox epidemics in Belém during that period as a result of Ceará migration. The main objective here is to present the discourse of governmental authorities, doctors, and the press on the subject, aiming to understand its reasoning and potential questionings related to the positions of these entities. Since Vianna, this topic hasn’t been adequately addressed by historiography, deserving proper attention and investigative dedication.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Laços e rimas: mulher e casamento na literatura de cordel (Belém 1914-1949)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-10-29) ARAÚJO, Rayane Freitas; CAMPOS, Ipojucan Dias; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0380400211532063The dissertation presents discussions about female representations in cordel in Belém do Pará during the first half of the 20th century. More specifically in the leaflets of Editora Guajarina, which operated in the capital of Belém between 1914 and 1949. In this sense, the work seeks to analyze how women are portrayed in the cordelistas' narratives, considering the historical, social and cultural context of the time. The research investigates whether the representations reinforce traditional gender stereotypes or whether, in some way, they offer more complex and diverse views of female experiences. It is evident that the cordel literature in question contributes to perpetuating gender stereotypes, but also offers clues to resistance and ongoing changes. This duality reinforces the relevance of studying female representations in the leaflet, both to understand the history of women and to question and deconstruct prejudices in the present. Therefore, the study examines the influence of these narratives on the construction of collective imaginaries about the role of women in Amazonian and Pará society in the period in question, but also demonstrates the importance of such themes in the present.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Masculinidades em Belém do Grão-Pará de Dalcídio Jurandir, um olhar caleidoscópico: História e Literatura (1920-1950)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2025-03-06) SOUZA, Felipe Gustavo Pedrosa; GUZMÁN, Décio Marco Antônio de Alencar; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0656841754619406; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3219-4404The purpose of this research is to investigate the masculinities presented by the Para writer Dalcídio Jurandir in his novel Belém do Grão-Pará and the elements that make it up, identifying a plurality that offers support for establishing a concept of masculinity based on the problems raised by the American philosopher Judith Butler. Transitioning between the 1920s, in which the work is set, and the 1950s, in which the writer constructs his work, the aim is to identify aspects present in the time in which the writer lived and the context in which he chose to establish his writing. In the meantime, the research establishes a comparison between the literary work Belém do Grão-Pará and other historical sources, with a predominance of printed sources, the newspapers that circulated in the Pará press in 1950.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Oposição conservadora ao sufrágio feminino na imprensa paraense durante o período de 1919 a 1932: análise das narrativas e resistências(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2023-07-04) DEMETRIO, Lediane Araujo Pires; NEVES, Fernando Arthur de Freitas; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1491729914353266The research proposes to analyze how the conservative discourse was disseminated by the Pará press, represented by the newspapers ―Folha do Norte‖, ―O Estado do Pará‖ and ―A Palavra‖, in relation to the right of women to vote. These journals played a key role in disseminating and legitimizing conservative ideas that restricted women's political participation. At the same time, the research seeks to understand how suffragette women used these same communication vehicles for joint strategies of awareness and engagement, in order to make known their aspirations for political and social equality. They took advantage of these spaces to challenge traditional conceptions that limited their role in society and claimed their right to full citizenship. The chosen spatial cut is the city of Belém do Pará, which will serve as a representative example of the Pará context. The chronological outline of the research begins in 1919, from the elaboration of the bill of Senator Justo Chermont, which proposed the extension of the right to vote to women. Through this study, we seek to understand both the resistance faced by suffragettes from Pará on their path towards equal rights, as well as the coping and overcoming strategies adopted by them. The study will contribute to the understanding of the history of feminist struggles in Pará, expanding our knowledge about the process of winning the right to vote for women.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Para além da Baía de Guajará: migrações em Arapiranga e Ilha das Onças (1905-1950)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-01-19) SARMENTO, Enos Botelho; GUZMÁN, Décio Marco Antônio de Alencar; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0656841754619406; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3219-4404This work presents the migration dynamics between Belém and its island border (the island of Onças and the island of Arapiranga) in the first half of the 20th century (1905-1950). Through a historiographical and documentary critique, the aim is to explain the mobilities that led to the settlement of these varzeira regions following the arrival of migrants in the territories of Pará, to add this study to research on migratory movements in the Amazon estuary, rescuing the trajectories of foreigners, northeasterners and internal displacement, investigating in selected sources the origin of this population that currently resides in this estuary. The investigation seeks to contribute to Pará and Amazonian historiography to introduce the islands into historical perspective and reflections, refuting stigmatizing discourses about them, commonly imagined as regions empty of memory, with no interest in economic or political historical reflection.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Por rios e terras: a atuação dos comerciantes estrangeiros no comércio do Baixo Amazonas (c.1838-c.1870)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2024-02-28) MESQUITA, Joanderson Caldeira; CANCELA, Cristina Donza; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8393402118322730The Province of Pará underwent significant transformations between 1838 and 1870. The 19th century was marked by attempts to control labor and commercial activities in the province. The commercial dynamics between the lower Amazon and the city of Belém favored the involvement of many foreign traders. The period is also characterized by attempts by authorities to diminish the privileges of foreign traders and increase provincial revenue. Authorities also tried to control illegal trade to prevent traders from dealing with cabanos and mocambeiros, which affected foreign traders whose workers were involved in negotiations with mocambeiros, although this control was not exclusive to foreigners. To minimize attempts to control illegal trade, the portuguese José Pinto de Campos and Antônio Caetano Maciel established relationships with the Caetano Correia Family. In this dissertation, we seek to evaluate the actions of foreign traders Joaquim José Cohen, Francisco Caetano Correia, José Pinto de Campos, Antônio Caetano Maciel, John Hislop, and João Fernandes in the lower Amazon. Our analysis is marked by the reopening period of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Pará and the stage that precedes the extraordinary demands for rubber in the international market, which occurred in the 1870s. For the research, criminal records, civil records, reports from the Province of Pará, travelers reports and newspapers were analyzed. We conclude that the foreign traders who migrated and operated in the commerce of the lower Amazon region conducted business with Belém, Santarém, and, in the case of Jonh Hislop, with Mato Grosso, establishing relationships with the local elite, some of whom were also formed by foreign individuals and families, or their descendants, who had been settled in the province for a longer time. These traders ascended in the social hierarchy of the region, and much of their business involved illegality and trade with mocambeiros, freedmen, free people and cabanos, resulting in a tense relationship with authorities who created restrictive measures to control trade in the region to combat illegal trade and the influence of foreigners, particularly those who did not originate from nations that had friendship treaties with Brazil, excluding the Portuguese.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Sexualidades dissidentes em prosa: as representações das homossexualidades masculinas e das travestis na década de 1970 nos jornais de Belém/PA(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2022-09-28) CASTRO, Alana Albuquerque de; CANCELA, Cristina Donza; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8393402118322730The civil-military coup took place in 1964, and it would last until mid-1985, the year which would mark the beginning of a series of social, political, cultural and economic changes. During this period, more specifically in the 70's, homosexuality would rise to a prominent place, not only in Brazil but in the entire world. The gay power movement and the Sexual Revolution would bring to light an entire generation which was tired of hiding and denying its own desires. In this context, Belém was also a stage for great changes. The "Mainstream Media" supported the military regime and all of its "morality". On the other hand, however, Belém's youth was breaking free from its shackles and looking for ways to have their voice heard by society, either through attempts to organize themselves politically or through spaces of sociability. Homosexuality and transvestites were not invisible and these subjects were not willing to remain on the margins of society. With that said, this work seeks to comprehend what was the place of Gay Men and Transvestites in this society going through so many transformations and how these people were portrayed in the journalistic discourses about dissident sexualities made by the mainstream media (A Província do Pará, Folha do Norte/Folha Vespertina e O Liberal) in the 70's. For this, in addition to the newspapers, I conducted interviews with interlocutors who lived the period and all these changes mentioned, broadening my understanding of the dynamics of the period, the sociability, the spaces, the social political movement, the daily practices, behaviors and representations related to homosexuals and transvestites.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) “Tocados d’aquelle venenoso mal”: as epidemias em Belém na primeira metade dos oitocentos: 1800 - 1850(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2022-09-22) SILVA, Diego Santos da; VIEIRA JÚNIOR, Antonio Otaviano; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6764908679902300The objective of this research is the analysis and the historical-social relationships of the incidences of epidemics and infectious diseases that impacted the lives of the inhabitants of the city of Belém, the capital of Grão-Pará, during the first half of the 19th century. The relationship between economic and population development, the emergence of smallpox and yellow fever epidemics, and their relationships and implications for the economic and population development of the City of Belém are analyzed. The structure of the dissertation is composed of three chapters. The first chapter makes a brief presentation about a city of Belém and how it was a great stage of mobility, both for goods and people, due to the presence of ports. The second chapter analyzes the medical understanding of epidemics and their lines of interpretation. And the third chapter deals with the statistical measurement of those most affected by the epidemics, seeking to identify the patterns and levels of mortality during the smallpox and yellow fever epidemic attacks, more specifically. The methodology used was documentary research, and the documents were researched and made available in several collections in Belém such as: Public Archives of the State of Pará (APEP), Historical and Geographical Institute of Pará (IHGP) and Central Library of UFPA / collection of rare works and Fran Pacheco Library of the Portuguese Literary and Recreation Association.
