Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Educação republicana sob a ótica de José Veríssimo(2010) ARAÚJO, Sônia Maria da SilvaThis article associates the studies about educational thought in Brazil. We approach the interpretations of José Veríssimo on the national problems of the Brazilian education in the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Our intention is to present and analyze these interpretations, carried through in the First Republic. José Veríssimo was born in Óbidos, Pará, in 1857, and died in Rio de Janeiro, in 1916. He spent part of his intellectual life in Pará and another part in the capital of the Republic, where he established and participated actively in the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) and in the Brazilian Magazine (Revista Brasileira). The author was an important studious man in the discussions on the consequences of the Portuguese colonialism and the frustrated attempts to have some republican politics of education in Brazil. For José Veríssimo, the public education would have strategically overcome the racial degenerations promoted by the settling in Brazilian backlands. The "Brazis" that sociologically made the domestic territory to that time are thought by Veríssimo as an impediment to be overcome by the Republic for the insertion of the Country in the modern order that for him meant civilization. But this so called civilization would be effective under his perspective, as all the Brazilians were included in a project of national unit.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Uma fotografia, múltiplas imagens: a educação rural no norte do Brasil(2010-12) ARAÚJO, Sônia Maria da SilvaThe article addresses the processes by which schools have been established and institutionalized on extensive-grazing ranches in rural Soure, Marajó Island, Brazil. Emergence of these schools has been tied to large landholdings and to the political relations between ranchers, vaqueiros, and government. Theoretical reflections, social data, and events are placed side-by-side with photographs that depict the fragile state of public education available to children living in the rural areas of far northern Brazil.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) História das mulheres, história de vida de professoras: elementos para pensar a docência(2014-09) ARAÚJO, Sônia Maria da SilvaThrough two life histories of riverine teachers, this article reflects on teaching that happens in the context of Guajará Archipelago, in Belém of Pará, Brazil. It points out common features between those life histories as sexual violence during childhood, poverty, and schooling in order to demonstrate that teaching cannot be thought out of a wider context of women's constitution. It argues that the women status in this region has historically performed singular possibilities that explain how and why girls who were excluded from the school world for a long period turned into teachers. It demonstrates how being a teacher joins to the social processes of the riverine space, ensuring a whole interrelation process.
