Then, the textbook American English File 2, which is adopted by students of the third semester of Languages: English and Portuguese at the Franciscan University in the city of Santa Maria/RS, is analyzed. In order to determine which strategies are usually adopted to teach vocabulary to the English language learners, five units of the textbook are analyzed. Finally, a questionnaire is applied to the students, in order to check whether the strategies they say they apply to learn new words are the same strategies explored by the textbook being analyzed. The results showed that, although most of the activities found in the textbook focus on vocabulary acquisition without considering language in use, the learners identified reading - an activity that makes use of language in context - as the best strategy for learning new vocabulary in the target language.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Arquétipo e representação na telenovela: lugar comum e espaços discursivos na representação do mesmo nas protagonistas - Helena de Manoel Carlos(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2013-06) MIRANDA, Cristia RodriguesThis paper pretends to study some archetypes and models about the compositions in Manoel Carlos’s Helenas-character, considering the cultural industry and mass culture. Taking that into account, the context of this essay comprises Milton Hatoum’s novel The Brothers (2002), aiming at identifying how Milton Hatoum problematises the space and time of the Amazon as interpreted by hegemonic discourses. Therefore, promoting a profitable bridge between queer perspectives and the postcolonial subject, this study analyses how Hatoum’s narrator positioning on a postmodern margin, as articulated by Santiago Colás (1994), debunks the mainstream linearity of Western imaginary. The Amazon of The Brothers (2002) (re)presents a world significant in itself, rather than an empty stage of human development, wherein time and space are no longer so easily encapsulated as hegemony wishes. The conclusion, hence, demystifies a singular construction of history recurrently questioned by Eduardo Galeano (1997) since it poses that “there is no other way” (p. 4) for a space to develop. There are, actually, many.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A dinâmica do léxico: a neologia de empréstimos no contexto da publicidade(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2013-12) CONTIERO, ElzaThe influence of globalization and technology on the lexicon of languages is a fact that cannot be denied; therefore the constant occurrence of foreign words in the Brazilian Portuguese language is a linguistic phenomenon that deserves some reflection. Nowadays, English is the language which gives rise to the most lexical borrowings absorbed by the Brazilian Portuguese language. Broad presence of foreign lexical in media channels linked to communication and information can reveal such phenomenon. The main goal of this paper is to analyze the foreign words found in advertising texts, conveyed in magazines whose target audience is the youth. The collected foreign words refer to a neology that has not been yet transformed into a loanword, so to identify them as such; we adopted the lexicographical criteria, dictionary registration. Having said that, we shall consider a foreign word the lexical unit originally of a foreign language and that is in full use in the Brazilian Portuguese language but it is not in the dictionaries yet.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Usos da memória e do esquecimento na história de Tefé/AM: as culturas indígenas, a igreja católica e as ordens religiosas(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2013-12) TELES, Luciano Everton CostaThis article aims at understanding the uses of memory and forgetting in history Tefé, inland city of Amazonas, through the buildings which were elevated to the status of historical and cultural heritage, notably the Church of Santa Teresa (Mother) and St. Joseph Seminary, revealing that these buildings evoke historical memory and evoke a specific, linked to Catholic missionaries. To do so, the concepts of being and consciousness, in Sartre’s masterpiece, Being and Nothingness: Phenomenological Ontology Essay, are used, as well the concept of narrative space. Thus, the methodological procedure is guided in elaborate an analysis of the romance using the relation among space, being and consciousness; therefore, it is created the tool existential space. Previously, it is concluded that, in fact, the existentialism took part as a former of the narrative structure in modern romance, specifically, in the appraised romance; nevertheless, it is not just as a theme, but as an incrusted element in romance form. Thus, the purpose of this work is to reflect, from the considerations of critical discourse analysis (CDA) and multifunctional Linguistic theory by Halliday (2004), about howthe representations of homosexual prejudice are in reports from Veja and Época magazines. Considering the dialectics relationship between language and society, there are in these reports semiotic elements that present social relations and cultural values, reinforcing society's taboos concerning sexual rights.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) A geografia da diferença nas Veredas de Guimarães Rosa(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2013-12) CORREIA, Paulo PetronilioThe aim of this paper is to map the geography of difference that inhabits the literature of Mr. João Guimarães Rosa , as well as mapping the status of the Narrator , his multiple signs and learnings on their journeys . Questions addressed include: Who are Federal University of Pará’s actual partners in the implementation of its policy?; Are they its management staff, its faculty members, the Amazonian communities, the municipalities, or the federal government of the brand new republic?; Whose are those voices and how do they echo in the documents that witnessed the beginning of the referred policy? We are grounded in notions of voices, production context (BRONCKART, 1999) and discourse genres (BAKHTIN, 2003). Two documents comprise the corpus: official documents related to the institucional policy. For this purpose, we start from the analysis of two songs of Marujada, religious procession that takes place in the city of Bragança, in the state of Pará, from Rhetoric by Aristotle and from the work of current researchers about argumentation in discourse, among which we mention Amossy (2006) and Charaudeau (1992, 2000, 2004, 2008). From Aristotle (2005) we take the notions of ethos, pathos and logos and from Charaudeau the notion of descriptive mode of organization of discourse (1992), visée discursive (2004) and rationalization (2008). With this work we hope to demonstrate how, in certain discourses such as the religious, the logos is not built from a logical rationality, but by emotions of the producer of the discourse, which drive the composition of the logos.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) “Pedagogia da engenharia”: Brasília arquitetada nos jornais (1956-1960)(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-06) SANTOS, Michelle dosThe work plan "PEDAGOGY OF ENGINEERING": BRASÍLIA ARCHITECTED IN NEWSPAPERS (1956-1960) aims to present the new capital as an imaginary construction of multiple meanings in graphic parks – even before its inauguration in "concrete" on April 21, 1960 – and to promote a debate to extend the notions of architecture and engineering, admitting them as expressions not only physical, but also narrative, of power and symbolism of a people, a city or political regime, considering the study and analysis of journalistic sources produced at the time of the Brasilia edification (1956-1960). To do so, we use the concepts of modernity and modernist city, from James Holston (1993) and Marshall Berman (2007), among other titles on the historiography of the Juscelino Kubitschek’s synthesis. The methodological approach is grounded in analysis of contemporary bibliographies on the history of architecture and engineering, in a diachronic perspective that goes through Brazil and gets out in the world. Preliminarily, it was concluded that, in any case, “saying” becomes “doing”, and the "written city" is as real as the one upraised by the “candangos”. The importance of this study for the literary field is that it interrelates, in a theoretically prolific way, the research and the teaching, the print journalism and the recent history of our country.Item Acesso aberto (Open Access) Mitologia parakanã: o encontro com a morte nas narrativas orais dos índios parakanã do sudeste do Pará – Brasil(Universidade Federal do Pará, 2014-06) SILVA, Rita de Cássia Almeida; SILVA, Claudio EmidioThis article aims to demonstrate how this people uses mythology to rework comprehended and contemporary events from their reference, considering the study and analysis of interviews and knowledge about the mythology of Parakanã Southeast of Pará For this, we use the concepts Silva (1995) points out that facts about the registration of indigenous myths of America , the analytical psychology of Jung (1977) studying the myths in the construction of universal archetypes, and studies in Anthropology and Ethnology (SILVA, 2009; ALMEIDA-SILVA, EMIDIO-SILVA, 2005; FAUSTO, 2001; SANTOS, 1994; SANTOS, 1982; MAGALHÃES, 1985; ARNAUD, 1983; EMIDIO-SILVA, 1998; MILLER, 2001; GOSSO & OTTA, 2003; GOSSO, 1998) that may corroborate the discussion. Our main goal is to show the marks of intersubjectivity in the present work. To do so, we will take based on the theoretical enunciation of Emile Benveniste, as well as contributions Flowers (2008). After the selection of excerpts from works that present brands in the category of person, which indicates the presence of subjects in the text, we analyze these brands, proving the existence of two forms of intersubjectivity: one between the characters and another between author and reader . Thus, the analysis proposed in this article is divided into two parts: the first focuses on intersubjectivity between author and reader, most recurrent in the first part of the book and the second between the character of the work, which besides keeping dialogues among themselves, communicate with the reader.
